3:1 Յաղագս անիմաստասէր բարուց առաջնոցն մերոց թագաւորաց եւ իշխանաց:
| 3:1 Concerning the unscholarly habits of our first kings and princes:

3:2 Կամիմ զանիմաստասէր բարս առաջնոցն մերոց նախնեացն ոչ առանց յիշատակի բամբասանաց թողուլ, այլ աստէն իսկ, ի սկզբան մերոյ գործառնութեանս, զվասն նոցա կշտամբութեան յարմարել զբանս:
| 3:2 I do not wish to leave the unscholarly habits of our first ancestors without a word of censure but to insert here at the very beginning of our work the reason for reprehending them:

3:3 Զի թէ արդարեւ արժանի գովութեան այնք ի թագաւորաց իցեն, որք գրով եւ պատմութեամբ զիւրեանցն հաստատեալ կարգեցին զժամանակս, եւ զգործս իմաստութեան եւ զքաջութիւն իւրաքանչիւր արձանացուցին ի վէպս եւ ի պատմութիւնս` ըստ նոցանէ եւ պարապեալքն այսպիսում ճգնութեան դիւանագիրք մատենից` ներբողականաց ի մէնջ արժանի եղեն ասից. ի ձեռն որոց եւ մեք յընթեռնուլն զառ ի նոցանէ շարածս բանից` ըստ աշխարհաւրէն կարգաց իմաստնանալ ասիմք, եւ քաղաքականս ուսանել կարգս, յորժամ զայսպիսիս ընթերցասիրիցեմք իմաստութեան ճառս եւ զրուցատրութիւնս, որք են Քաղդէացւոց եւ Ասորեստանեայց, Եգիպտացւոց եւ Հելլենացւոց. առ այսոքիւք եւ փափագիցեմք եւս արդեաւք իմաստութեան արանցն այնոցիկ, որ զայսպիսի փոյթ յանձին կալան. - ապա ուրեմն ամենեցուն մեզ յայտնի է թագաւորացն մերոց եւ այլոց առաջնոցն առ ի յիմաստն տխմարութիւն, եւ անկատարութիւն ոգւոյն բանականի:
| 3:3 If in truth those kings are worthy of praise who in written accounts fixed and ordered their annals and wise acts and inscribed each one’s valor in narratives and histories, then like them the compilers of books of archives who were occupied with similar efforts are worthy of our eulogies. Through these, I say, when we read their accounts, we become informed about the course of the world, and we learn about the state of civilization when we peruse such wise discourses and narratives - those of the Chaldaeans, Assyrians, Egyptians, and Hellenes. It is indeed to the wisdom of these men, who undertook such studies, that we aspire. So, then it is clear to us all that our kings and other forefathers were negligent toward scholarship and unconcerned with the life of reason:

3:4 Զի թէպէտ եւ եմք ածու փոքր, եւ թուով յոյժ ընդ փոքու սահմանեալ, եւ զաւրութեամբ տկար, եւ ընդ այլով յոլով անգամ նուաճեալ թագաւորութեամբ` սակայն բազում գործք արութեան գտանին գործեալ եւ ի մերում աշխարհիս, եւ արժանի գրոյ յիշատակի, զոր եւ ոչ մի ոք ի նոցանէ պէտ յանձին կալաւ մատենագրել:
| 3:4 For although we are a small country and very restricted in numbers, weak in power, and often subject to another’s rule, yet many manly deeds have been performed in our land worthy of being recorded in writing; nonetheless not one of these undertook to have them written down:

3:5 Արդ` այնոքիկ, որ եւ ոչ անձանց խորհեցան բարի առնել, եւ անուն յիշատակի յաշխարհի թողուլ, զի՞ արդեաւք եւ մեղադրութիւն մեր այնպիսեացն ի ճահ պատահիցէ, զեւս մեծագոյնս ի նոցանէ պահանջել եւ որ ինչ հնագոյն քան զնոսա:
| 3:5 So if they did not think of benefiting themselves and leaving a memorial to their name in the world, how appropriate is our reproach of such men in demanding still greater things of them and accounts of what occurred earlier than them:

3:6 Այլ ասիցէ ոք արդեաւք. վասն ոչ լինելոյ գիր եւ դպրութիւն ի ժամանակին, կամ վասն պէս պէս պատերազմացն, որ կուռ զմիմեանց զկնի ի վերայ գային:
| 3:6 But then someone might say: it was because there was no writing or literature at the time, or because of the various wars that succeeded each other without a pause:

3:7 Այլ ոչ արդարեւ այսոքիկ կարծեցեալ լինի. քանզի գտանին եւ միջոցք լեալ պատերազմացն, եւ գիր Պարսից եւ Յունաց, որովք այժմ գիւղից եւ գաւառաց, եւս եւ իւրաքանչիւր տանց առանձնականութեանց, եւ հանուրց հակառակութեանց եւ դաշանց այժմ առ մեզ գտանին անբաւ զրուցաց մատեանք, մանաւանդ որ ի սեպհական ազատութեան պայազատութիւն:
| 3:7 However, these suggestions are not justified because there were indeed intervals between the wars, and the Persians and Greeks had scripts that today are used among us for books with innumerable accounts of villages and provinces and even private families and of controversies and pacts, especially those that concern the succession of the noble families:

3:8 Այլ ինձ թուի, որպէս այժմ` եւ առ հինսն Հայաստանեայցս լեալ անսիրելութիւն իմաստութեան եւ երգարանաց բանաւորաց:
| 3:8 But it seems to me that nowadays, just as in the past, the Armenians were not enamored of scholarship or intellectual books:

3:9 Վասն որոյ աւելորդ է մեզ եւ այլ յաղագս արանց անբանից, թուլամտաց, վայրենեաց ճառել:
| 3:9 Therefore it is superfluous for us to say anything more about those unlettered, lazy, and barbarous men:
|
3:10 Բայց ընդ քո յոյժ զարմացեալ եմ ընդ մտացդ ծննդականութիւն, որ ի սկզբանցն մերոց ազգաց մինչեւ ցայժմուսս միայն գտար զայսպիսւոյ մեծէ իրէ բուռն հարկանել, եւ մեզ խոյզ խնդրոյ առաջի արկանել - երկար եւ շահաւոր գործով զազգիս մերոյ կարգել զպատմութիւնն ճշդիւ` զթագաւորացն եւ զնախարարականաց ազգաց եւ տոհմից, թէ ո՛վ յումմէ, եւ զի՛նչ իւրաքանչիւր ոք ի նոցանէ գործեաց, եւ ո՛վ ոք ի ցեղիցս որոշելոց ընտանի եւ մերազնեայ, եւ ո՛յք ոմանք եկք ընտանեցեալք եւ մերազնացեալք. եւ զգործս եւ զժամանակս իւրաքանչիւր գրով դրոշմել, ի ժամանակէ անկարգ ամբարտակին շինուածոյ մինչեւ ցայժմ. - գեղեցիկ զայս քեզ համարեալ ի փառս եւ անջան հեշտութիւն:
| 3:10 But I am greatly amazed at the fertility of your mind, that from the beginnings of our nation up to the present you alone have been found to undertake such a great task and to present us with this request - to write the history of our nation in a long and useful work, to deal accurately with the kings and the princely clans and families: who descended from whom, what each one of them did, which of the various tribes are indigenous and native and which are of foreign origin but naturalized, to set down in writing each one’s deeds and times from the time of confusion at the building of the tower up to the present - reckoning this as a noble tribute to you for your glory and untiring delight:

3:11 Առ որ այսչափ միայն ասացից. միթէ մատեա՞ն մերձ կայցէ ինձ, որպէս ասի ի Յովբ, կամ դպրութիւն քոց հայրենեացն, որով նմանագոյնս արդեաւք Եբրայեցւոցն պատմագրաց` ի վերուստ ի քեզ իջուցանիցեմ անսխալ, կամ ի քէն եւ յայլոց սկսեալ` անդր ի վեր հանիցեմ ի սկիզբն:
| 3:11 For which reason I shall say only this. “ Is there not a book near to me,” as is said in Job [Job 37:20], or the literature of your homeland by means of which, like the Hebrew historians, I can bring down my account without error from the beginning as far as you, or starting from you and others work backward to the beginning:

3:12 Բայց սակայն սկսայց, թէպէտ եւ ջանիւ. միայն թէ շնորհակալ ոք մերոցս գտանիցի աշխատութեանցս:
| 3:12 Nonetheless I shall begin, though with an effort, provided that one of our countrymen be found who will be grateful for these labors:

3:13 Եւ սկսայց` յորոց եւ այլքն, որք յեկեղեցւոջ եւ ոյք ըստ Քրիստոսի, աւելորդ համարելով զարտաքնոցն երկրորդել յաղագս սկզբանն առասպելս, բայց եթէ զկնիսն` ժամանակս ինչ արդեաւք եւ զարս յայտնիս, որում եւ աստուածայինքն ի ճահ գայցեն պատմութիւնք բանից. մինչեւ ի հարկէ երթեալ հասանիցեմք ի հեթանոսականսն զրուցատրութիւնս. սակայն եւ ի նոցանէ` զոր ինչ հաւաստին կարծեմք, առնուլ:
| 3:13 And I shall begin where the others did who were in the church and Christians, considering it superfluous to repeat the fables of pagans concerning the beginnings, though I shall mention some of the later times and the famous men where the divine Scriptures concur until we necessarily reach the pagan narratives; and from these we shall take whatever we consider reliable:
