14:1 Յաղագս թագաւորութեանն Տիգրանայ Միջնոյ եւ ընդդէմ կալոյ զաւրացն Յունաց, եւ զմեհեանսն շինելոյ, եւ արշաւանս առնելոյ ի Պաղեստին:
| 14:1 Concerning the reign of the middle Tigran, his resistance to the Greek armies, his building of the temples, and his incursions into Palestine:

14:2 Յետ Արտաշիսի Առաջնոյ թագաւորէ Տիգրան որդի նորա ի քառասուն եւ յիններորդ ամի Արշականայ թագաւորի Պարսից:
| 14:2 After Artashēs the First, his son Tigran became king in the forty- ninth year of Arshakan, king of Persia:

14:3 Եւ ժողովեալ զզաւրս Հայոց` ընդդէմ երթայ զաւրացն Յունաց, որք յետ մահուանն Արտաշիսի հաւրն իւրոյ եւ ցրուելոյ զաւրացն` հետամուտ լեալ դիմեալ գային յաշխարհս մեր:
| 14:3 He assembled the Armenian forces and marched against the Greek army, which after the death of his father Artashēs and the dispersal of his troops had attacked and invaded our country:

14:4 Որոց ընդդէմ պատահեալ Տիգրանայ` արգելեալ ի վերջ նահանջէ:
| 14:4 Tigran opposed them, halted them, and threw them back:

14:5 Եւ ի քեռայր իւր Միհրդատ հաւատացեալ զՄաժաք եւ զհոգս Մէջերկրայցն եւ զաւր բազում թողեալ առ նմա` դառնայ յաշխարհս մեր:
| 14:5 To his brother- in- law Mithridates he entrusted Mazhak and the care of Anatolia; and leaving a numerous army with him, he returned to our country:

14:6 Առաջին գործ զմեհեանսն շինել կամեցաւ:
| 14:6 As his first task he wished to construct the temples:

14:7 Իսկ քրմացն, որ եկեալ էին ի Յունաց, զմտաւ ածեալ, զի մի՛ ի խորագոյն Հայս վարիցին` պատճառեցան ըղձութիւնս, իբր թէ դիքն անդէն կամիցին զբնակիլն:
| 14:7 But the priests, who had come from Greece, decided not to penetrate deep into Armenia. For an excuse they feigned omens to the effect that the gods wished to reside at that very spot:

14:8 Որում հաւանեալ Տիգրան, կանգնեաց զՈղիմպիական պատկերն Դիոսի յամուրն յԱնի, եւ զԱթենայն ի Թիլ, եւ զԱրտեմիդայ զմիւս պատկերն յԵրիզայ, եւ զԵփեստուն ի Բագայառինջ:
| 14:8 Tigran consented and raised the statue of Zeus Olympus in the fortress of Ani, that of Athena in T’il, the second statue of Artemis in Erēz, and that of Hephaistos in Bagayaṙinj:

14:9 Բայց զԱփրոդիտեայ զպատկերն, իբրեւ Հերակլեայ տարփաւորի, առ նորին պատկերին Հերակլեայ հրամայեաց կանգնել յաշտից տեղիսն:
| 14:9 But the statue of Aphrodite, as the beloved of Heracles, he ordered to be set up beside the statue of the same Heracles in Ashtishat:

14:10 Եւ ցասուցեալ ընդ Վահունիսն, եթէ ընդէ՛ր յիւրեանց սեպհականին իշխեցին կանգնել զպատկերն Հերակլի, զառաքեալն ի նորին հաւրէ` ընկենու զնոսա ի քրմութենէն, եւ զգիւղն յարքունիս առնու, յորում պատկերքն կանգնեցան:
| 14:10 And angered at the Vahuni in that they had taken it upon themselves to set up on their private lands the statue of Heracles sent by his own father, he dismissed them from the priesthood and confiscated to the crown the village in which the statues had been erected:

14:11 Եւ այսպէս մեհեանս շինեալ, եւ առաջի մեհենիցն բագինս կանգնեալ, զոհս ամենայն նախարարացն հրամայէ մատուցանել հանդերձ երկրպագութեամբ. զոր չառեալ յանձն արանց ազգին Բագրատունեաց. յորոց զմիոյ ուրումն զլեզուն հատեալ, որում անուն էր Ասուդ, վասն պատկերացն անարգանացն` ոչ այլ իւիք խոշտանգէ. քանզի յանձն առին ուտել ի զոհիցն արքայի եւ զմիս խոզի, թէպէտ եւ ոչ ինքեանք զոհեցին երկրպագութեամբ:
| 14:11 In this fashion he built temples; and in front of the temples he set up altars, ordering all the princes to offer sacrifices and worship. To this the men of the Bagratuni family did not agree, and he cut off the tongue of one of them, called Asud, for dishonoring the images; but he did not torment them in any other way, for they agreed to eat meat from the king’s sacrifices and also pork, although they themselves did not sacrifice or worship:

14:12 Վասն որոյ առնու ի նոցանէ ի բաց զիշխանութիւն զաւրուն. բայց միայն զթագակապ ասպետութիւնն ոչ հանէ:
| 14:12 Therefore he deprived them of the command of the army; but he did not take away the office of aspet with the right of crowning:

14:13 Ինքն իջանէ ի Միջագետս, եւ գտեալ անդ զԲարշամինայ զպատկերն, զոր ի փղոսկրէ եւ ի բիւրեղէ կազմեալ էր արծաթով` հրամայէ տանել կանգնել յաւանին Թորդան:
| 14:13 He himself went down to Mesopotamia, and finding there the statue of Barshamin, he embellished it with ivory, crystal, and silver. He ordered that it should be brought and set up in the town of T’ordan:

14:14 Եւ նոյն հետայն դիմէ յաշխարհն Պաղեստինացւոց` վրէժս պահանջել ի Պտղոմայիդ Կղէոպատրայ յաղագս Դիոնիսի որդւոյ նորա առ հայր իւր յանցանաց:
| 14:14 Immediately thereafter he attacked Palestine to seek vengeance from Cleopatra daughter of Ptolemy for the crimes of her son Dionysius against his own father:

14:15 Առեալ գերի բազում եւ ի Հրէից` նստի շուրջ զՊտղոմայիդ քաղաքաւ:
| 14:15 He took many captives from among the Jews and besieged the city of Ptolemais:

14:16 Իսկ դշխոյն Հրէից Աղեքսանդրիայ, որ եւ Մեսաղինայ, որ էր լեալ կին Աղեքսանդրի, որդւոյ Յոհաննու, որդւոյ Շմաւոնի, եղբաւր Յուդայ Մակաբէի, որ զայնու ժամանակաւ ունէր զթագաւորութիւնն Հրէից, ինչս բազումս տալով` դարձոյց զնա անտի:
| 14:16 But the queen of the Jews, Alexandra - also known as Messalina - who was the wife of Alexander, son of John, son of Simon the brother of Judas Maccabaeus, and who at that time held the throne of the Jews, by giving him many presents turned him back:

14:17 Քանզի էր լուեալ եւ համբաւ, թէ Վայկուն ոմն անուն յեղուզակ խռովէր զերկիրն Հայոց, զլեառն ամուր կալեալ, որ մինչեւ ցայժմ յանուն յեղուզակին կոչին Վայկունիք:
| 14:17 For he had heard a report that a certain brigand called Vaykun was causing a tumult in Armenia, holding the inaccessible mountain that up to now is called Vaykunik’ after the name of the brigand:
