24:1 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյն Արշամայ, եւ զառաջինն մասնաւոր հարկիլ Հայոց Հռոմայեցւոց. եւ արձակումն Հիւրկանու, եւ վասն նորին վտանգ ազգին Բագրատունեաց:
| 24:1 Concerning the reign of Arsham, the first submission of part of Armenia to Roman tribute, the freeing of Hyrcanus, and the danger to the Bagratuni family on his account:

24:2 Ի քսաներորդի ամի, ի կատարումն աւուրց թագաւորութեանն Արշէզի, ժողովեալ զաւրքն Հայոց հրամանաւ նորին թագաւորեցուցին ի վերայ ինքեանց զԱրջամ, որ եւ Արշամ, որդի Արտաշիսի, եղբայր Տիգրանայ, հայր Աբգարու:
| 24:2 In the twenty- fourth year, at the end of the days of the reign of Artashēs, the Armenian army mustered and at his command made king over themselves Arjam, that is, Arsham, son of Artashēs, Tigran’s brother, and father of Abgar:

24:3 Զսա ոմանք յԱսորւոց կոչեցին Մանովայ, ըստ յոլովից սովորութեան` կրկին ունելով անուանս. որպէս Հերովդէս Ագրիպպաս, եւ որպէս Տիտոս Անտոնինոս եւ կամ Տիտոս Յուստոս:
| 24:3 Some Syrians call him Manov, according to the custom of many to have two names, like Herod Agrippa, or like Titus Antony or Titus Justus:

24:4 Բայց քանզի ի նմին ամի վախճանեցաւ Արշէզ, թողլով զթագաւորութիւնն Պարսից որդւոյ իւրում Արշաւրի, մանկան փոքրկան յոյժ եւ տղայոյ` ոչ ոք էր որ աւգնէր Արշամայ` ընդդէմ կալ Հռոմայեցւոց. խաւսի ընդ նոսա ի հաշտութիւն խաղաղութեան, տալով զհարկս ի Միջագետաց եւ ի կողմանց Կեսարու ի ձեռն Հերովդի:
| 24:4 But because in the same year Arshēz died, leaving the throne of Persia, to his son Arshavir, a small child and a minor, there was no one to help Arsham resist the Romans. He parleyed with them for a peace treaty, giving tribute from Mesopotamia and the regions of Caesarea through Herod:

24:5 Այս եղեւ սկիզբն Հայոց մասնաւոր մտանել ընդ հարկաւ Հռոմայեցւոց:
| 24:5 This was the beginning for part of Armenia to become tributary to the Romans:

24:6 Զայսու ժամանակաւ եղեւ մեծ ցասումն Արշամայ ի վերայ Ենանոսի ասպետի ուրումն թագակապի. քանզի նա արձակեաց զՀիւրկանոս Հրէից քահանայապետ, զոր գերեալ էր Բարզափրանայ Ռըշտունւոյ յաւուրս Տիգրանայ:
| 24:6 At this time Arsham became greatly angered against Enanos, an aspet and coronant, because he had freed Hyrcanus, the high priest of the Jews whom Barzap’ran Ṙshtuni had captured in the days of Tigran:

24:7 Իսկ Ենանոս պատճառի առ արքայի, ասելով եթէ փրկանս խոստացաւ հարիւր քանքար. ակն ունելով առնուլ ի նմանէ. եւ յանձն էառ տալ:
| 24:7 But Enanos excused himself to the king, saying that he had promised a ransom of a hundred talents; and since he expected to receive this from him, he undertook to give it to Arsham:

24:8 Վասն որոյ ժամադրութիւն ի վերայ նորա սահմանէ Արշամ:
| 24:8 Therefore Arsham fixed a set term for him:
|
24:9 Եւ նորա առաքեալ զմի յեղբարց իւրոց ի Հրէաստան, որում անուն էր Սենեքիայ, առ Հիւրկանոս, զի տայցէ ինչս յաղագս իւրոյ փրկութեանն:
| 24:9 And he sent one of his brothers, whose name was Senekia, to Judaea to Hyrcanus so that the latter might give him the money for his ransom:

24:10 Եւ երթեալ առաքեալն յԵնանոսէ` պատահէ սպանեալ զՀիւրկանոս Հերովդի, զի մի՛ ինչ դաւ լիցի թագաւորութեան նորա:
| 24:10 But when Enanos’ messenger arrived he found that Herod had put Hyrcanus to death to prevent any plot against his rule:

24:11 Արդ` իբրեւ եհաս ժամադրութիւնն, եւ չտայ զգանձս փրկանացն Հիւրկանու Ենանոս` բարկանայ ի վերայ նորա Արշամ, եւ ընկեցեալ ի պատուոյն` հրամայէ դնել ի բանտի:
| 24:11 So when the appointed time arrived and Enanos did not pay the price of Hyrcanus’ ransom, Arsham was angered at him; and depriving him of his rank, he ordered him to be imprisoned:

24:12 Յայնմ ժամանակի քսութիւն զնմանէ մատուցանէ արքայի Զաւրայ նահապետ ազգին Գնթունեաց, ասելով. «Գիտեա՛, արքայ, զի ապստամբել ի քէն կամեցաւ Ենանոս, խորհուրդ ընդ իս բերելով, զի երդումն խնդրեսցուք ի Հերովդէէ թագաւորէ Հրէաստանի, իբր ընդունել զմեզ եւ տալ ժառանգութիւն ի բնակ երկրի մերում. քանզի նորակտուտ ծանակեցաք յաշխարհիս յայսմիկ:
| 24:12 At that time Zawra, the chief of the Gnt’uni family, calumniated him before the king, saying: “ Know, O king, that Enanos wished to revolt against you, and he proposed to me that we should seek an oath from Herod, king of Judaea, that he would receive us and give us hereditary lands in our own native land because we had recently suffered insults in this country:

24:13 Եւ իմ ոչ առնլով յանձն` ասեմ ցնա. Ընդէ՞ր պատրիմք զրուցաւք վաղընջուց եւ պառաւեալ առասպելաւք, պաղեստինացիս զմեզ վարկանելով:
| 24:13 And I did not agree but said to him: ‘ Why do we deceive ourselves with ancient tales and old wives’ fables, putting ourselves out to be Palestinians? ’:

24:14 Եւ նորա անյուսացեալ յինէն` նմին իրի առաքեաց զքահանայապետն Հիւրկանոս, եւ առաւել եւս ի Հերովդէէ անյուսացաւ. այլ ոչ մեկնի ի դրժողութեան բարուցն` եթէ ոչ արքայդ աճապարեսցես նմա:
| 24:14 He, despairing of me, sent to the high priest Hyrcanus for the same purpose, but he was even more disappointed by Herod. But he will not abandon his faithless habits unless, O king, you stop him:

24:15 Այսմ քսութեան հաւատացեալ արքային Արշամայ` հրամայեաց տանջանս պէսպէս ի վերայ Ենանոսի կուտել. եւ վախճան գործոյն - կա՛մ թողուլ ի սպառ զաւրէնս հրէութեան, եւ երկիր պագանել արեգական, եւ պաշտել զկուռս արքայի, ընդ որ վստահացեալ արքայի տացէ նմա զնոյն իշխանութիւն, կամ կախել զփայտէ եւ բնաջինջ լինել ազգի նորա:
| 24:15 King Arsham believed this calumny and ordered all sorts of torments to be inflicted on Enanos. The purpose of this was either to force him to abandon completely the Jewish religion and worship the sun and adore the king’s idols - in which case the king promised to restore to him his former authority - or he would be hung on a cross and his family would be exterminated:

24:16 Եւ սպանեալ զմի յազգականացն առաջի նորա, որում անուն էր Սարիայ, եւ առ ընթեր զորդիսն մատուցեալ ի տեղի սպանմանն, որոց անուանքն Սափատիայ եւ Ազարիայ` յերկիւղէ մահուան որդւոցն եւ ի թախանձելոյ կանանցն կատարէ զկամս արքայի հանդերձ ամենայն ազգատոհմիւն, եւ յառաջին պատիւն իւր հաստատի:
| 24:16 One of his relations, whose name was Saria, he put to death in front of him, and he brought his sons, whose names were Sap’atia and Azaria, up beside him to the place of execution. From fear that his sons would die and at the supplication of his wives, he and all his kin fulfilled the king’s wishes, and he was reestablished in his former rank:

24:17 Սակայն ոչ ամենեւին վստահանայ ի նա արքայ. այլ առաքէ ի Հայս, հաւատալով նմա զաշխարհն, զի ի Միջագետաց միայն հեռացուսցէ զնա:
| 24:17 However, the king did not have complete confidence in him but sent him to Armenia, entrusting the land to him merely to remove him from Mesopotamia:
