26:1 Թագաւորութիւն Աբգարու, եւ մտանել բոլորովիմբ Հայոց ընդ հարկաւ Հռոմայեցւոց. եւ պատերազմ ընդ զաւրս Հերովդի, եւ սպանանել զեղբաւրորդի նորա զՅովսէփ:
| 26:1 The reign of Abgar, Armenia becomes entirely tributary to the Romans, the war with Herod’s army and the murder of his nephew Joseph:

26:2 Թագաւորէ Աբգար որդի Արշամայ ի քսաներորդ ամի Արշաւրի արքայի Պարսից:
| 26:2 Abgar, son of Arsham, came to the throne in the twentieth year of Arshavir, king of Persia:

26:3 Այս Աբգարոս կոչէր աւագ այր, վասն առաւել հեզութեանն եւ իմաստութեանն. որում յետոյ եւ տիքն. զայս ոչ կարելով ուղղախաւսել Յունաց եւ Ասորւոց` կոչեցին Աբգարոս:
| 26:3 This Abgar was called “ noble man’’ because of his great kindness and wisdom and, later, for his years. And since the Greeks and Syrians could not pronounce his name, they called him Abgarus:

26:4 Ի սորա երկրորդ ամի թագաւորութեանն հարկին Հռոմայեցւոց բոլորովիմբ ամենայն կողմանքն Հայոց:
| 26:4 In the second year of his reign all the regions of Armenia became entirely tributary to the Romans:

26:5 Քանզի հրաման ել յԱւգոստոս կայսերէ, որպէս ասի ի Ղուկայ աւետարանին, աշխարհագիր առնել ընդ ամենայն տիեզերս. վասն որոյ եւ ի Հայս առաքեալ գործակալք Հռոմայեցւոց, բերելով զպատկերն Աւգոստոսի կայսեր` կանգնեցին յամենայն մեհեանս:
| 26:5 For a command went out from Augustus Caesar, as is said in Luke’s gospel [Luke 2:1], that a census should be made throughout the universe. Therefore, Roman agents were also sent to Armenia, bringing the image of Augustus Caesar, which they set up in every temple:

26:6 Զայսու ժամանակաւ լինի ծնեալ Փրկիչն մեր Յիսուս Քրիստոս որդի Աստուծոյ:
| 26:6 At that time was born our Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God:

26:7 Զսմին աւուրբք լինի խռովութիւն ի մէջ Աբգարու եւ Հերովդի:
| 26:7 In those same days there took place a quarrel between Abgar and Herod:
|
26:8 Քանզի Հերովդի հրամայեալ զիւր պատկերն հուպ ի կայսերական պատկերն կանգնել ի մեհեանս Հայոց. զոր չառեալ յանձն Աբգարու` պատճառս ի վերայ նորա յուզէ Հերովդէս:
| 26:8 for Herod commanded his own image to be set up near to the emperor’s in the temples of Armenia. Since Abgar did not accept this, Herod sought a pretext for war against him:

26:9 Առաքէ զզաւրս Թրակացւոց եւ Գերմանացւոց ասպատակաւ հինից յերկիրն Պարսից, հրաման տուեալ ընդ աշխարհն Աբգարու անցանել:
| 26:9 He sent an army of Thracians and Germans on a foray for plunder into Persia and commanded them to cross Abgar’s land:

26:10 Իսկ Աբգարու ոչ հաւանեալ` ընդդիմանայ ասելով, եթէ ընդ անապատ է հրաման կայսեր անցանել զաւրացդ ի յերկիրն Պարսից:
| 26:10 But Abgar did not submit to this and opposed them, saying that it was the emperor’s command that this army should cross into Persia through the desert:

26:11 Ընդ որ դառնացեալ Հերովդէս` անձամբ ինչ ոչ կարէր վճարել, պէսպէս ցաւոց զնա ըմբռնեալ, - վասն զի ի Քրիստոս համարձակեցաւ` որդանցի նմա եռացեալ - որպէս պատմէ Յովսեպոս. առաքէ զեղբաւրորդի իւր զՅովսէփ, որում տուեալ էր զդուստր իւր, որ էր յառաջ կին Փերուրի եղբաւր իւրոյ:
| 26:11 Herod became angered at this, but he was unable to do anything in person since he had to endure all sorts of pain - on account of his presumption against Christ, worms grew inside him, as Josephus narrates. He sent his nephew Joseph to whom he had given his sister, who had previously been the wife of his brother P’erur:

26:12 Եւ նորա առեալ զբազմութիւն զաւրացն` գայ հասանէ յաշխարհն Միջագետաց, պատահէ Աբգարու ի զաւրանիստ գաւառին Բուգնան. եւ մարտուցեալ մեռանի, եւ զաւրքն փախստական լինի:
| 26:12 He took a great army, marched to Mesopotamia, and met Abgar in the province of Bugnan where he was encamped. In the battle he was killed and his army fled:

26:13 Նոյն հետայն վախճանի եւ Հերովդէս, եւ Հրէից ազգապետ` զԱրքեղայոս նորին որդի Աւգոստոս կացուցանէ:
| 26:13 Immediately thereafter Herod also died, and Augustus made his son Archelaus Ethnarch of the Jews:
