33:1 Քարոզութիւն յԵդեսիայ առաքելոյն Թադէոսի, եւ պատճէն թղթոցն հնգից:
| 33:1 The preaching in Edessa of the Apostle Thaddaeus and the copies of five letters:
|
33:2 Բայց յետ համբառնալոյ Փրկչին մերոյ` Թովմաս առաքեալ, մի յերկոտասանիցն, առաքեաց զմի յեաւթանասնից անտի զԹադէոս ի քաղաքն Եդեսիայ` բժշկել զԱբգար եւ աւետարանել ըստ բանին Տեառն:
| 33:2 After the ascension of our Savior, Thomas the apostle, one of the twelve, sent one of the seventy, Thaddaeus, to the city of Edessa to cure Abgar and to preach the gospel according to the Lord’s saying:

33:3 Որոյ եկեալ եմուտ ի տուն Տուբիայ իշխանի հրէի, զոր ասեն լինել յազգէն Բագրատունեաց. որոյ խուսեալ յԱրշամայ` ոչ ուրացաւ զհրէութիւնն ընդ այլ ազգականս իւր, այլ նովին աւրինաւք եկաց մինչեւ հաւատալ ի Քրիստոս:
| 33:3 When he arrived, he entered the house of Tobias, the Jewish prince who, they say, was of the Bagratuni family. He had fled from Arsham and had not renounced the Jewish faith with his other kinsmen but lived under the same law until his conversion to Christ:

33:4 Եւ ել համբաւ նորա ընդ ամենայն քաղաքն:
| 33:4 And the report about him Thaddaeus went out throughout the whole city:
|
33:5 Լուեալ Աբգարու ասէ. «Նա է վասն որոյ գրեացն Յիսուս», եւ իսկոյն կոչեաց զնա:
| 33:5 When Abgar heard it, he said: “ This is he concerning whom Jesus wrote.” And he immediately summoned him:
|
33:6 Եւ եղեւ ի մտանելն Թադէի` տեսիլ սքանչելի երեւեցաւ Աբգարու յերեսսն Թադէի. եւ յարուցեալ ի գահոյիցն անկաւ ի վերայ երեսաց իւրոց եւ երկիր եպագ նմա. եւ զարմացան ամենայն իշխանքն որ շուրջն կային, զի ոչ գիտացին զտեսիլն:
| 33:6 And it happened that when Thaddaeus entered, a marvelous vision appeared to Abgar on Thaddaeus’ face, and rising from his throne he fell on his face and worshipped him. All the princes who were standing around him were astonished, for they had not perceived the vision:
|
33:7 Եւ ասէ ցնա Աբգար, եթէ «Դո՞ւ իցես արդարեւ աշակերտ աւրհնելոյն Յիսուսի, զոր ասաց առաքել ինձ այսր, եւ կարո՞ղ իցես բժշկել զցաւս իմ:
| 33:7 Abgar said to him: “ Are you truly the disciple of the blessed Jesus whom he said he would send to me here, and are you able to cure my pains:
|
33:8 Պատասխանի ետ նմա Թադէ. «Եթէ հաւատասցես ի Քրիստոս Յիսուս յորդին Աստուծոյ` տացին խնդրուածք սրտի քոյ:
| 33:8 Thaddaeus replied to him: “ If you believe in Christ Jesus the Son of God, the requests of your heart will be granted:
|
33:9 Ասէ ցնա Աբգար. «Ես հաւատացի ի նա եւ ի հայր նորա. վասն որոյ կամեցայ առնուլ զզաւրս իմ եւ գալ կոտորել զՀրեայսն, որ խաչեցին զնա, եթէ ոչ էր իմ արգելեալ վասն թագաւորութեանն Հռոմայեցւոց:
| 33:9 Abgar said to him: “ I have believed in Him and in his Father. For that reason, I wished to take my army and go to slaughter the Jews who crucified Him, had I not been prevented because of the Roman empire:
|
33:10 Եւ յայսմ բանէ սկիզբն արարեալ Թադէի` աւետարանեաց նմա եւ քաղաքի նորա. եւ եդեալ ձեռն ի վերայ բժշկեաց զնա, եւ զԱբդիու պատագրոս իշխան քաղաքին եւ պատուական յամենայն տանն արքայի, նա եւ զամենայն որ էին ի քաղաքին հիւանդք եւ ախտաժէտք, բժշկեաց:
| 33:10 Beginning with these words Thaddaeus preached the gospel to him and his city. And placing his hand on him he cured him and also the gout of Abdiu, a noble of the city and the most honorable man in all the royal court. Similarly, he healed all the sick and afflicted in the city:

33:11 Եւ հաւատացին ամենեքեան. եւ մկրտեցաւ ինքն Աբգար եւ ամենայն քաղաքն. եւ զդուրս տաճարաց կռոցն փակեցին. եւ որ ի վերայ բագնին եւ սեանն կային պատկերքն` ծածկեալ պատեցին եղեգամբ. եւ ոչ զոք ածէր բռնութեամբ ի հաւատս, բայց աւր ըստ աւրէ յաւելեալ ի հաւատացեալսն բազմանային:
| 33:11 And they all believed. Abgar himself and the whole city were baptized. They closed the doors of the temples of the idols, and they hid the images that were on the altars and columns by covering them with reeds. And he did not bring anyone by force to the faith, but day by day they increased the number of the faithful:

33:12 Իսկ առաքելոյն Թադէի զխոյրարար ոմն մետաքսագործ մկրտեալ, եւ անուն կոչեցեալ Ադդէ, ձեռնադրեալ ի վերայ Եդեսիայ` փոխանակ իւր թողու առ արքայի:
| 33:12 The apostle Thaddaeus baptized a certain tiara maker and silk worker called Addē, ordained him as bishop over Edessa, and left him in his stead with the king:
|
33:13 Եւ իւր առեալ հրովարտակ յԱբգարէ, զի ամենեքեան լուիցեն աւետարանին Քրիստոսի` գայ առ Սանատրուկ քեռորդի նորին, զոր կարգեալ էր ի վերայ աշխարհիս եւ զաւրացն:
| 33:13 He himself, receiving an edict from Abgar that all should listen to the gospel of Christ, went to Sanatruk, Abgar’s nephew, whom he had set over our land and army:
|
33:14 Բայց Աբգար յաւժարեցաւ գրել թուղթ առ Տիբերիոս կայսեր, որ ունի աւրինակ զայս:
| 33:14 But Abgar was emboldened to write a letter to the Emperor Tiberius in the following terms:
|

| 33:15 ABGAR’S LETTERS TO TIBERIUS:

33:16 Աբգար արքայ Հայոց, տեառն իմում Տիբերի կայսեր Հռոմայեցւոց խնդալ:
| 33:16 Abgar, king of Armenia, to my lord Tiberius, emperor of the Romans, greetings:
|
33:17 Գիտելով իմ, եթէ ոչ ինչ ծածկի ի քումմէ թագաւորութենէդ, այլ իբրեւ զմտերիմ քո` աւելի եւս իմացուցանեմ ի ձեռն գրոյ:
| 33:17 Although I know that nothing is hidden from your majesty, yet as your friend I am informing you even more precisely in writing:
|
33:18 Զի Հրեայք, որ բնակեալ են ի գաւառս Պաղեստինացւոց` ժողովեալ խաչեցին զՔրիստոս առանց իրիք յանցանաց, ի վերայ մեծամեծ երախտեացն, զոր արար առ նոսա, նշանս եւ սքանչելիս, մինչեւ զմեռեալս անգամ յարուցանել:
| 33:18 For the Jews who live in the provinces of Palestine gathered together and crucified Christ without His committing any transgressions and despite the tremendous benefits that He had worked among them, signs and wonders, even on occasion raising the dead:
|
33:19 Եւ գիտեա՛, զի զաւրութիւնքս այս ոչ են սոսկ մարդոյ, այլ Աստուծոյ:
| 33:19 Know that these miracles are not a mere man’s but God’s:
|
33:20 Զի եւ ի ժամանակին յորում խաչեցինն զնա` արեգակն խաւարեցաւ, եւ երկիր շարժեալ տատանեցաւ. եւ ինքն յետ երից աւուրց յարեաւ ի մեռելոց եւ երեւեցաւ բազմաց:
| 33:20 For at the time when they crucified Him, the sun was darkened and the earth moved and was shaken. He himself after three days rose from the dead and appeared to many:
|
33:21 Եւ այժմ յամենայն տեղիս անուն նորա ի ձեռն աշակերտաց նորա սքանչելիս մեծամեծս կատարէ. որ եւ առ իս ինքեան եցոյց յայտնապէս:
| 33:21 And now in every place His name accomplishes great miracles through his disciples. He indicated that to me myself clearly:
|
33:22 Եւ արդ` այսուհետեւ տէրութիւնդ քո գիտէ, որ ինչ արժան է հրամայել ի վերայ ժողովրդեանն Հրէից, որք զայն գործեցին, եւ գրել ընդ ամենայն տիեզերս, զի երկրպագեսցեն Քրիստոսի` իբրեւ ճշմարիտ Աստուծոյ:
| 33:22 So consequently your majesty knows whatever is right to command concerning the people of the Jews who have done this, and that you should write throughout the whole universe that they should worship Christ as the true God:

33:23 Ողջ լեր:
| 33:23 Be well:

33:24 Պատասխանի թղթոյն Աբգարու ի Տիբերեայ:
| 33:24 THE REPLY TO ABGAR’S LETTER FROM TIBERIUS:
|
33:25 Տիբերիոս կայսր Հռոմայեցւոց, Աբգարու թագաւորի Հայոց խնդալ:
| 33:25 Tiberius, emperor of the Romans, to Abgar king of Armenia, greetings:
|
33:26 Զթուղթ մտերմութեանդ քոյ ընթերցան առաջի իմ, վասն որոյ շնորհակալութիւն ի մէնջ քեզ հասցէ:
| 33:26 Your friendly letter has been read before me, for which please accept my thanks:
|
33:27 Թէպէտ եւ ի բազմաց մեք լուեալ զայդ յառաջագոյն, եցոյց եւ Պիղատոս ստուգապէս վասն նշանաց նորա, եւ եթէ յետ յարութեանն ի մեռելոց հաւատարիմ եղեւ բազմաց, թէ Աստուած է:
| 33:27 Although we had previously heard of this from many people, Pilate informed us accurately about His miracles and that after His resurrection from the dead many were persuaded that He was God:
|
33:28 Վասն որոյ եւ ես կամեցայ առնել զայդ, զոր եւ դուդ խորհեցար:
| 33:28 Therefore I also wished to do what you planned:
|
33:29 Այլ քանզի սովորութիւն է Հռոմայեցւոց` աստուած ի հրամանէ թագաւորի միայնոյ ոչ նստուցանել, մինչեւ ոչ փորձեալ քննեսցի նա ի սինկղիտոսէ, վասն որոյ եւ իմ յայտնեալ զբանս զայս սինկղիտոսին` արհամարհեաց սինկղիտոսն, զի ոչ քննեցաւ նա յառաջագոյն ի սմանէ:
| 33:29 But because the Romans have a custom not to recognize a god by the emperor’s command alone until he has been examined and investigated by the senate, therefore I revealed this affair to the senate. But the senate rejected it because the matter had not been previously investigated by it:

33:30 Այլ մեր տուաք հրաման ամենայն ումեք, որում եւ հաճոյ թուեսցի Յիսուս` ընկալցին զնա ընդ աստուածս. եւ մահ այնոցիկ սպառնացեալ, որ չարախաւս կայցեն զքրիստոնէից:
| 33:30 But we commanded everyone to whom Jesus seemed pleasing that they should accept Him among the gods. And we threatened with death those who spoke evil of the Christians:
|
33:31 Եւ վասն ժողովրդեանն Հրէից, որք յանդգնեցան խաչել զնա, զորմէ լսեմ, եթէ ոչ արժանի խաչի էր նա եւ մահու, այլ պատուի եւ երկրպագութեան, յորժամ առից պարապումն ի պատերազմէն Սպանիացւոց ապստամբողաց յինէն` քննեալ հատուցից նոցա զարժանն:
| 33:31 And as for the people of the Jews who presumed to crucify Him, of whom I hear that He was worthy neither of the cross nor of death but rather of honor and worship, when I have a respite from the war with the Spaniards who revolted against me, I shall examine the matter and inflict on them their just deserts:

33:32 Դարձեալ գրէ թուղթ Աբգար առ Տիբերիոս:
| 33:32 AGAIN ABGAR WRITES A LETTER TO TIBERIUS:
|
33:33 Աբգար արքայ Հայոց, տեառն իմում Տիբերի կայսեր Հռոմայեցւոց խնդալ:
| 33:33 Abgar, king of Armenia, to my lord Tiberius, emperor of the Romans, greetings:
|
33:34 Զթուղթ գրեալ ըստ արժանի քոյոյ տէրութեանդ տեսի, եւ ընդ հրաման մտածութեանդ քոյ ուրախացայ. եւ եթէ ոչ ցասնուցուս ինձ` գործ սինկղիտոսիդ յոյժ այպանելի է. քանզի առ դոսա` ի քննութենէ մարդկան տուեալ լինի աստուածութիւն:
| 33:34 I have seen the letter written by your worthy majesty and I have rejoiced at your considered command. And if you will not be angry at me, the action of your senate is most ridiculous. For according to them it is by the scrutiny of men that divinity is conferred:
|
33:35 Եւ արդ այսուհետեւ եթէ ոչ լինիցի Աստուած հաճոյ մարդոյն` Աստուած լինել նա ոչ կարէ. եւ իբրեւ յայսմանէ մարդոյն արժան է քաւել զԱստուածն:
| 33:35 So, consequently, if God does not please men, He cannot be God; and on this reasoning it is right for men to pardon God:
|
33:36 Բայց քեզ տեառն իմում հաճոյ թուեսցի առաքել զայլ ոք յԵրուսաղէմ փոխանակ Պիղատոսի. զի լուծցի նա անարգանաւք յիշխանութենէն յոր կարգեցեր զնա. վասն զի արար զկամս Հրէիցն, եւ խաչեաց զՔրիստոս ի տարապարտուց առանց քոյոյ հրամանի:
| 33:36 But may it please you, my lord, to send someone else to Jerusalem in place of Pilate, so that the latter may be removed with ignominy from the authority to which you appointed him because he did the will of the Jews and crucified Christ unjustly without your permission:
|
33:37 Ողջ լինել քեզ ըղձամ:
| 33:37 I desire your health:
|
33:38 Զայս գրեալ Աբգարու` զհաւասար թղթոյն եդ ի դիւանի իւրում, որպէս եւ զայլսն:
| 33:38 Abgar wrote this and placed a copy of the letter in his archive, as he had done with others:

33:39 Գրեաց եւ առ Ներսեհ մանուկ արքայ Ասորեստանի ի Բաբելոն:
| 33:39 He also wrote to the young Nerseh, king of Assyria, in Babylon:
|
33:40 Թուղթ Աբգարու առ Ներսեհ:

33:41 Աբգար արքայ Հայոց, որդւոյ իմում Ներսեհի խնդալ:
| 33:41 Abgar king of Armenia to my son Nerseh, greetings:
|
33:42 Զգիր ողջունի քոյ տեսի, եւ զՊերոզ լուծի ի կապանաց, եւ զվնաս նորա թողի նմա. եւ եթէ կամ իցէ քեզ` կարգեսցես զնա ի վերակացութիւն Նինուէի, որպէս եւ կամիս:
| 33:42 I have seen your letter of greeting and have loosed Peroz from bonds and have forgiven him his fault. And if it is your wish you may appoint him to the governorship of Nineveh, as you wish:
|
33:43 Այլ վասն այնր զի գրեցեր առ իս, թէ տո՛ւր ածել զայրդ բժիշկ, որ զնշանսդ առնէ եւ քարոզէ այլ Աստուած ի վեր քան զհուր եւ զջուր, զի տեսից եւ լուայց դմա` նա ոչ էր բժիշկ ըստ արուեստից մարդկան, այլ աշակերտ որդւոյն Աստուծոյ, արարչի հրոյ եւ ջրոյ. եւ վիճակ հասեալ ի կողմանս Հայոց առաքեցաւ:
| 33:43 But as for your writing to me ‘ send me that doctor who works miracles and preaches another god superior to fire and water so that I may see and hear him, ’ he was not a doctor with human skill but a disciple of the son of God, creator of fire and water. And he has been sent to Armenia, having drawn that lot:

33:44 Բայց յընկերաց նորա գլխաւորաց, Սիմովն անուն, այդր ի կողմանս Պարսից առաքեալ է. խնդիր արարեալ` լուիցես նմա, յորժամ եւ հայրն քո Արտաշէս:
| 33:44 But one of his principal companions, Simon by name, has been sent to Persia. If you seek him out you will be able to hear him, as may also your father Artashēs:
|
33:45 Եւ նա բժշկեսցէ զամենայն հիւանդութիւնս, եւ ճանապարհ կենաց ցուցցէ:
| 33:45 And he will cure all illnesses and show you the path of life:
|
33:46 Եւ յաւել եւս գրել առ Արտաշէս արքայ Պարսից աւրինակ զայս:
| 33:46 Furthermore he also wrote to Artashēs, king of Persia, as follows:
|
33:47 Թուղթ Աբգարու առ Արտաշէս:
| 33:47 ABGAR’S LETTERS TO ARTASHĒS:

33:48 Աբգար արքայ Հայոց, Արտաշիսի եղբաւր իմում Պարսից արքայի խնդալ:
| 33:48 Abgar, king of Armenia, to my brother Artashēs, king of Persia, greetings:
|
33:49 Գիտեմ զի արդ լուեալ է քո վասն Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի որդւոյն Աստուծոյ, զոր խաչեցին Հրեայքն. որ յարեաւն ի մեռելոց, եւ առաքեաց զաշակերտսն իւր ընդ ամենայն տիեզերս` ուսուցանել ընդ հանուր:
| 33:49 I know that by now you have heard about Jesus Christ, the son of God, whom the Jews crucified, who rose from the dead, and sent His disciples throughout the whole world to teach everywhere:
|
33:50 Եւ մի յաշակերտաց նորա գլխաւորաց, Սիմովն անուն, է ի կողմանս քոյոյ տէրութեանդ:
| 33:50 And one of His principal disciples, Simon by name, is in the confines of your empire:
|
33:51 Արդ` խնդիր արարեալ գտցես զնա, եւ նա բժշկեսցէ զամենայն ախտս հիւանդութեանց` որ ի ձեզ, եւ ճանապարհ կենաց ցուցցէ. հաւատասցես բանի նորա, դու եւ եղբարք քո եւ ամենեքեան, որ հնազանդին քեզ կամաւոր:
| 33:51 Now if you seek him out and find him, he will heal all the ailments and illnesses among you and show you the path of life. You should believe his words, you and your brothers and all who willingly obey you:
|
33:52 Զի ախորժելի է ինձ` զձեզ ըստ մարմնոյ ազգականս` լինել ինձ մտերիմ հարազատս եւ ըստ հոգւոյ:
| 33:52 For it is pleasing to me that you who are my kin in the flesh should also be my dear relatives in the spirit:
|
33:53 Եւ մինչ դեռ պատասխանի այսց թղթոց ոչ էր ընկալեալ` վախճանի Աբգարիոս, թագաւորեալ ամս երեսուն եւ ութ:
| 33:53 And before he had received replies to these letters Abgar died, having reigned for thirty- eight years:
