46:1 Երուանդայ պատերազմ ընդ Արտաշիսի եւ փախուստ, եւ առումն քաղաքի նորին եւ մահ:
| 46:1 Eruand’s war against Artashēs and his flight, the capture of his city, and his death:

46:2 Բայց Սմբատ հանդերձ մանկամբն Արտաշիսիւ ելանէ առ ափն ծովուն Գեղամայ, զթիկամբքն Արագածն կոչեցեալ լերին. աճապարէին հասանել ի բանակն Երուանդայ:
| 46:2 But Smbat with the young Artashēs advanced to the edge of the lake of Geḷam at the back of the mountain called Aragats. They made haste to reach Eruand’s camp:

46:3 Առ ոչինչ համարեալ զբազմութիւն զաւրաց նորա` միայն ակնածէին ի Մուրացենէն Արգամայ, զի այր քաջ էր եւ բազմաց տէր տիգաւորաց:
| 46:3 Esteeming as nothing the host of his army, they only kept watch on Argam the Muratsean, for he was a valiant man and the lord of many lancers:

46:4 Եւ ճամբարն Երուանդայ էր բացագոյն ի քաղաքէ նորին աւելի քան երեք հարիւր ասպարիսաւ ի հիւսիսոյ, ի վերայ գետոյն Ախուրեան:
| 46:4 Eruand’s camp was more than three hundred stadia to the north of his city on the River Akhurean:

46:5 Զայս իբրեւ լսէր Երուանդ` հանէր ընդ առաջ զբազմութիւն զաւրացն, եւ ճակատէր ոչ հեռի յիւրմէ բանակէն:
| 46:5 When Eruand heard this news he sent forward the host of his troops and drew up his battle line not far from his own camp:

46:6 Իսկ Արտաշիսի առաքեալ պատգամ առ Արգամ նահապետ Մուրացեան հանդերձ բազում երդմամբք` թողուլ ի վերայ նորա զոր ինչ գտեալ էր յԵրուանդայ, եւ կրկին այլ յաւելուլ, միայն զի զԵրուանդ թողեալ ի բաց գնասցէ:
| 46:6 But Artashēs sent a message to Argam, prince of the Muratsean, with many oaths saying that he would leave him with whatever he had obtained from Eruand and would double it, provided that he abandon and desert Eruand:

46:7 Եւ իբրեւ հանդէպ ճակատուն Երուանդայ ելին նշանք Արտաշիսի` Արգամայ առեալ զբազմութիւն հետեւակացն` ի կողմն ելանէր:
| 46:7 And when the standards of Artashēs advanced to confront Eruand’s battle line, Argam took the host of his infantry and marched off to the side:

46:8 Եւ Սմբատ հրամայէր զփողսն պղնձիս հնչեցուցանել. եւ յառաջեալ զճակատն իւր` իբրեւ զարծուի յերամս կաքաւուց խոյանայր:
| 46:8 Smbat ordered the bronze trumpets to be sounded and advanced his battle line, swooping like an eagle into flocks of partridges:

46:9 Իսկ նախարարքն Հայոց, որ յաջ եւ յահեակ թեւսն էին, ի նա խառնեալ միանային:
| 46:9 The Armenian princes of the wings to the left and right joined together and went over to his side:

46:10 Եւ զաւրքն Վրաց, հանդերձ արքայիւն իւրեանց Փարսմանաւ, թէպէտ եւ յանդուգն յարձակմամբ յառաջեալ բախէին` արագապէս դառնային ի միւս կողմն փախուցեալ:
| 46:10 The Georgian army with their king P’arsman, although they advanced to the assault with proud élan, quickly turned and fled to the other side:

46:11 Եւ անդ էր տեսանել կոտորած անհնարին զգնդին Երուանդայ եւ զզաւրաց Միջագետաց:
| 46:11 Then one could see the terrible slaughter of Eruand’s army and of the Mesopotamian troops:

46:12 Եւ ի խառնակել այսպիսի ճակատուց` պատահեն Արտաշիսի արք քաջք Տաւրացիք, որոց զոգիս ի բաց եդեալ, Երուանդայ պայմանեալ` սպանանել զԱրտաշէս:
| 46:12 When the two lines clashed together Artashēs was attacked by some brave men from the Taurus, who at the cost of their lives had made a pact with Eruand to kill Artashēs:

46:13 Որոց դիպեալ ի հետի ընդ մէջ անցանէ Գիսակ որդի ստնտուին Արտաշիսի, եւ սատակեալ զնոսա, ուր եւ կէս դիմաց նորա ի վայր բերեալ սուսերաւ, զյաղթութիւն ստացեալ` մեռանի ի վերայ այսպիսեաց:
| 46:13 But Gisak, the son of Artashēs’ wet nurse, intervened on foot and slew them, thereby having half of his face cut off by a sword. He gained the victory but died as a consequence:

46:14 Եւ մնացեալ զաւրքն ի փախուստ դառնային:
| 46:14 The rest of the army turned in flight:
|
46:15 Իսկ Երուանդ ձիովն իւրով բովանդակ ասպարէզս անցեալ` ելանէ ի խանս կարգեալս ի բանակէն իւրմէ ի քաղաքն իւր, հեծեալ ի նոր ձիս հանգոյց ի հանգուցէ փախչել:
| 46:15 Eruand on horseback covered all the stadia and passed the hans on the road from his camp to his capital, successively changing to fresh horses:

46:16 Եւ քաջին Սմբատայ զհետ մտեալ` սաստկագոյնս վարէր զնա ի գիշերի մինչեւ ցդուռն քաղաքին:
| 46:16 The valiant Smbat pursued him, pressing him hard in the night as far as the city gate:
|
46:17 Եւ Մարաց զաւրացն անցեալ ի կողմն երուանդական գնդին, նսեմաւ ի վերայ դիականցն բանակէին:
| 46:17 The army of the Medes crossed over to the position of Eruand’s army and encamped in the dark over the corpses:

46:18 Իսկ Արտաշիսի հասեալ ի յԵրուանդայ շրջապատեալ առագաստն, ի կաշեայ եւ ի կտաւեայ պարսպին, էջ, եւ ի խորանի նորա բնակեցաւ զայն գիշեր:
| 46:18 Artashēs came up and entered Eruand’s tent whose walls were covered with curtains of skins and linen; he encamped for that night in his tent:

46:19 Եւ այգուն եղելոյ` տիրաբար արարեալ, զսպանեալսն թաղել հրամայեաց. եւ անուանեաց զհովիտն, ուր ի վերայ դիականցն բանակեցաւն` Մարաց մարգ, եւ զտեղի ճակատուն` Երուանդավան, որ կոչի մինչեւ ցայսաւր ժամանակի. այս ինքն եթէ յայսմ տեղւոջ վանեաց զԵրուանդ:
| 46:19 When morning dawned, as master of the field he ordered the dead to be buried, and he called the meadow where he had camped over the corpses Marats’ marg and the battlefield Eruandavan, which is so called up to this day, that is, “ in this place he defeated Eruand:

46:20 Եւ ինքն չուեաց ի քաղաքն Երուանդայ. յառաջ քան զմիջաւրեայ հասեալ ի դաստակերտն Երուանդայ, եւ միաբան գոչմամբ հրամայեաց աղաղակել զաւրացն` «Մար ամատ», որ թարգմանի Մարս եկն, յիշեցուցանելով զթշնամանսն, զոր յղէր Երուանդ առ թագաւորն Պարսից եւ առ Սմբատ, Մար զնա կոչելով:
| 46:20 He himself set out for Eruand’s capital and arrived at Eruand’s town before midday. He commanded his army to shout in unison: “ Mar amat,” which means “ the Mede has come,” to remind him of the insult when Eruand had sent to the Persian king and to Smbat, calling him a Mede:

46:21 Յայս ի սոյն ձայն անուանեցաւ դաստակերտն Մարմէտ, իբր ի կամաց Արտաշիսի` բառնալ զանուն Երուանդայ ի տեղւոջէն. այս պատճառ է անուանակոչութեան դաստակերտին:
| 46:21 From that same expression the town was named Marmēt, at the desire of Artashēs to remove the name of Eruand from the place. That is the reason for the naming of the town:

46:22 Բայց Սմբատայ գիշերայն զհետ Երուանդայ եկեալ սակաւ վաշտկանաւ` զդուռն քաղաքին պահէր մինչեւ ի գալն Արտաշիսի եւ զաւրացն ամենեցուն:
| 46:22 But Smbat, who had pursued Eruand at night with a small troop, guarded the city gate until the arrival of Artashēs and the whole army:
|
46:23 Եւ ի մարտնչել քաջացն ընդ ամրոցին` անձնատուրք եղեն մարդիկ ամրոցին, եւ բացին զդուռն քաղաքին:
| 46:23 When the brave soldiers attacked the fortress, the garrison of the fortress surrendered and opened the city gate:

46:24 Իսկ մի ոմն ի զինուորացն մտեալ եհար վաղերբ զգլուխն Երուանդայ, եւ ցրուեաց զուղիւղն ի յատակս տանն. եւ այսպիսի ջախմամբ վախճանեցաւ, կալեալ զթագաւորութիւնն ամս քսան:
| 46:24 However, one of the soldiers entered and struck off Eruand’s head with a saber, scattering his brains over the floor. From such a blow he died, having held the throne for twenty years:

46:25 Բայց Արտաշիսի յիշեալ, թէ խառնուած Արշակունւոյ է Երուանդ` հրամայէ զդի նորա թաղել մահարձանաւք:
| 46:25 But Artashēs remembered that Eruand had some Arsacid blood and ordered his corpse to be buried with funerary columns:
