53:1 Աւերումն Կասբից, եւ գրգռութիւն ընդ Սմբատայ զարմիցն Արտաշիսի եւ ընդ միմեանս:
| 53:1 The ravaging of the land of the Caspians, the quarrel of the descendants of Artashēs with Smbat and with each other:

53:2 Յետ մեռանելոյ վերջնոյ Արշակայ թագաւորի Պարսից, թագաւորեցուցանէ մերս Արտաշէս զհամանուն իւր զԱրտաշէս որդի նորին ի վերայ Պարսից աշխարհին:
| 53:2 After the death of the last Arshak, king of Persia, our Artashēs made his homonym, Arshak’s son Artashēs, king over the land of Persia:

53:3 Եւ ոչ կամեցան հնազանդել նմա բնակիչք լերինն, որ անուանեալ կոչի յիւրեանց լեզուն Պատիժահար գաւառ, որ է Գեղմանց լեառն, եւ ծովեզերեայք, եւ այսր եւս քան զնոսա. նա եւ Կասբից երկիրն յայն սակս ապստամբեն ի մերոյ արքայէն:
| 53:3 The inhabitants of the mountain, which is called in their own tongue the province of Patizhahar, that is, the mountain of Geḷmants’, did not wish to obey him, nor did those who dwelt by the sea and those beyond them. Similarly, the land of the Caspians for that reason rebelled against our king:

53:4 Վասն որոյ առաքէ ի վերայ նոցա Արտաշէս զՍմբատ ամենայն զաւրաւքն Հայոց, ինքն արքայ յուղարկ երթալով աւուրս եաւթն:
| 53:4 Therefore Artashēs sent Smbat against them with the entire Armenian army, and the king himself accompanied them for seven days:

53:5 Իսկ Սմբատայ երթեալ հնազանդէ զամենեսեան. բայց զերկիրն Կասբից աւերեալ` առաւել քան զԱրտազեան գերի ածէ ի Հայս. ընդ որս եւ զԶարդմանոս անուն թագաւոր նոցին:
| 53:5 So Smbat went and subdued them all; he ravaged the land of the Caspians and brought to Armenia more captives than those from Artaz, including their king, Zardmanos:

53:6 Վասն որոյ արժանի ըստ վաստակոցն պարգեւէ նմա Արտաշէս զմասն արքունի, որ ի շէնս Գողթան, եւ զՈւղտու ակունսն, եւ առ այսոքիւք` եւ զաւարն ամենայն նմա թողու:
| 53:6 Therefore as a just reward for his sendees, Artashēs granted him the royal portion in the villages of Goḷt’n and the springs of Uḷt, and in addition left him all the booty:

53:7 Ընդ որ նախանձեալ Արտաւազդ` կամեցաւ սպանանել զՍմբատ. եւ յայտնեալ խորհրդոյն, բազում խռովութիւն վասն այնր լինէր հաւրն:
| 53:7 Artavazd became jealous at this and wished to murder Smbat. And when the plan became known his father was greatly disturbed about it:

53:8 Իսկ Սմբատայ տեղի տուեալ գնաց զկողմամբք Ասորեստանի, իւրովք կամաւք թողլով զիշխանութիւն զաւրացն Հայոց, ընդ որ խանդայրն Արտաւազդ:
| 53:8 But Smbat withdrew and went to Assyria, willingly abandoning the command of the Armenian army - the cause of Artavazd’s envy:

53:9 Հրամանաւ Արտաշիսի բնակէ ի Տմորիս, որ այժմ կոչի Կորդրիք, ի յԱլկի նստուցեալ զբազմութիւն գերւոյն. քանզի էր ի ծերութեան կին արարեալ յասորեստանեայց հուպ յայն կողմանս, զոր յոյժ սիրեաց, վասն այնորիկ եւ զնորին կողմամբք բնակեցաւ:
| 53:9 At the command of Artashēs he dwelt in Tmorik’, which is now called Kordrik’, and he settled the host of captives at Aḷki. In his old age he had married an Assyrian from near to those parts, and as he greatly loved her, he made his dwelling in the same regions:

53:10 Իսկ Արտաւազդ յետ գնալոյն Սմբատայ առնու ի հաւրէն` որում ցանկայրն, զիշխանութիւն զաւրացն ամենեցուն:
| 53:10 After the departure of Smbat, Artavazd received from his father the object of his ambition - the command of the whole army:

53:11 Եւ նախանձ բերելով ընդ նմա եղբարցն ի գրգռութենէ կանանց իւրեանց. վասն որոյ կարգէ Արտաշէս զՎրոյր` հազարապետ, զայր իմաստուն եւ բանաստեղծ, եւ հաւատայ ի նա զամենայն գործս տանն արքունի. եւ զՄաժան կարգէ քրմապետ ի յԱնի դիցն Արամազդայ:
| 53:11 But because his brothers were jealous of him at the instigation of their wives, therefore Artashēs made Vroyr, a wise and erudite man, hazarapet and entrusted to him all the affairs of the royal household. And Mazhan he established as chief priest of the god Aramazd in Ani:

53:12 Բաժանէ Արտաշէս եւ զիշխանութիւն զաւրուն ընդ չորս. զարեւելեան զաւրն թողու ի վերայ Արտաւազդայ, եւ զարեւմտեանն տայ Տիրանայ, զհարաւայինն ի Սմբատ հաւատայ եւ զհիւսիսայինն ի Զարեհ:
| 53:12 Artashēs also divided the command of the army into four: he left Artavazd in command of the eastern army, Tiran over the western, and he entrusted the southern to Smbat and the northern to Zareh:

53:13 Եւ Զարեհ էր սէգ եւ յորս երէոց նահատակ, իսկ առ պատերազմունս վատ եւ տաղտուկ. զորոյ զփորձ առեալ Քարձամայ ուրումն արքայի Վրաց` ապստամբեցուցանէ զերկիրն, եւ կալեալ զԶարեհ, ի բանտի դնէ ի Կաւկաս:
| 53:13 Zareh was a boastful man, expert in hunting wild beasts, but at warfare incompetent and negligent. When the Georgian king, a certain K’ardzam, became aware of this, he incited the land to revolt. And capturing Zareh he imprisoned him in the Caucasus:

53:14 Ընդ որում պատերազմեալ Արտաւազդայ եւ Տիրանայ հանդերձ Սմբատաւ` դարձուցանեն զեղբայրն ի մեծէ կարակմէ:
| 53:14 Artavazd and Tiran with Smbat waged war on him and brought back their brother from the great mire:
