54:1 Պատերազմ ընդ զաւրս Դոմետիանոսի ի Բասեան:

54:2 Աղմուկ շփոթից իմն լեալ յարեւմուտս, ընդ որ վստահացեալ Արտաշէս` նշկահեալ ընդդիմանայ Հռոմայեցւոցն տէրութեանն, ոչ տալով հարկս:
| 54:2 When tumult and confusion arose in the west, Artashēs took courage from these events to rebel against the Roman empire, withholding the tribute:

54:3 Իսկ Դոմետիանոսի կայսեր ցասուցեալ` զաւրս ի վերայ Արտաշիսի առաքէ. որոց հասեալ ի կողմանս Կեսարու, զՏիրան եւ զզաւրսն արեւմտեան առաջի արկեալ` ածեն տագնապաւ մինչեւ ի քաջ ընդարձակ հովիտն Բասենայ. յորում ընդդէմ դիպեալ Արտաւազդ արեւելեայ եւ հիւսիսային զաւրաւքն, հանդերձ ամենայն որդւովքն արքայի, եւ պատերազմեալ` սաստկապէս վտանգին:
| 54:3 But the Emperor Domitian was angered and dispatched an army against Artashēs. When this arrived in the region of Caesarea it swept Tiran and the western army before it and drove them quickly back as far as the very wide valley of Basean. Artavazd hastened to oppose it with the armies of the east and north, accompanied by all the king’s sons. They fought fiercely and were hard pressed:

54:4 Յորոյ ի վերջս պատերազմին հասեալ Սմբատ հարաւային զաւրաւքն` ընդ մէջ անցեալ ապրեցուցանէ զորդիսն արքայի, յաղթութիւն եւ զրաւ պատերազմին արարեալ:
| 54:4 At the end of the battle Smbat arrived with the army of the south, and advancing into the midst of the fray he saved the king’s sons, winning the victory and ending the battle:

54:5 Զի թէպէտ եւ ծերագոյն էր` երիտասարդապէս յարդարեաց եւ մղեաց զճակատն, եւ հետամուտ եղեալ հալածեաց զզաւրսն Հռոմայեցւոց մինչեւ ի սահմանս Կեսարու:
| 54:5 Although he was very old, he organized and directed his battle line like a young man and pursuing the Roman army he threw it back as far as the borders of Caesarea:

54:6 Զայս կամելով երգել յառասպելսն` Դոմետ զոմն ասեն եկեալ, որ է ինքն կայսրն Դոմետիանոս. ոչ ինքն այսր, այլ զհրաման նորա եւ զզաւրս այլաբանելով յանուն նորա կոչեն:
| 54:6 When they wish to sing of this in their fables, they say a certain Domet came - that is the Emperor Domitian himself. However, he did not come here, but allegorically they call his command and army by his name:

54:7 Բայց ըստ բախտի եղեալ Արտաշիսի` մեռանի ի նմին ժամանակի Դոմետիանոս ի Հռոմ, եւ զկնի նորա Ներուաս ոչ աւելի թագաւորեալ քան զմի ամ:
| 54:7 But fortune favored Artashēs: at that same time Domitian died at Rome, and after him Nerva reigned for not more than one year:

54:8 Ընդ որ առաւել հպարտացեալ զաւրացն Հայոց եւ Պարսից` ասպատակ եւս ի Յոյնս արարին:
| 54:8 Emboldened by this the armies of the Armenians and Persians made more forays into Greece:

54:9 Ընդ սոսա հայելով Եգիպտացւոց եւ կողմանցն Պաղեստինացւոց` արգելուն եւ նոքա զհարկիլն Հռոմայեցւոց:
| 54:9 And when the Egyptians and Palestinians saw this, they too withheld their tribute from the Romans:
