55:1 Յաղագս Տրայիանոսի եւ նորին գործոց, եւ մահուանն Մաժանայ յեղբարցն:
| 55:1 Concerning Trajan and his deeds, and the murder of Mazhan by his brothers:

55:2 Զայսու ժամանակաւ թագաւորեալ լինի Հռոմայեցւոց Տրայիանոս, եւ խաղաղացուցեալ զամենայն արեւմուտս, դիմէ ի վերայ Եգիպտացւոց եւ Պաղեստինացւոց. եւ նուաճեալ զնոսա ընդ իւրով ձեռամբ, խաղայ յարեւելս ի վերայ Պարսից:
| 55:2 At that time Trajan became emperor of the Romans, and having pacified all the east he descended on the Egyptians and Palestinians. Having subjected them to his authority, he marched to the east against Persia:

55:3 Աստ աճապարեալ Արտաշէս մեծապէս ընծայիւք իջանէ ընդ առաջ նորա, զմեղանս յանձն առեալ, հանդերձ հարկաւք անցելոց ամացն լինի առաջի նորա. եւ թողութիւն ի նմանէ գտեալ, դառնայ յաշխարհս Հայոց:
| 55:3 In haste Artashēs came down to meet him there with magnificent presents, and accepting the responsibility for defaulting he appeared before him with the tribute of the previous years. Having obtained pardon from him, he returned to Armenia:

55:4 Եւ Տրայիանոսի անցեալ ի Պարսս, եւ զամենայն զկամս իւր կատարեալ` դառնայ ընդ Ասորիս:
| 55:4 Trajan passed on into Persia, and having accomplished all his desires returned through Syria:

55:5 Ընդ առաջ նորա իջեալ Մաժան` մատնութիւն զեղբարցն առնէր. «Գիտեա՛, ասէ, արքայ. եթէ զԱրտաւազդ եւ զՏիրան վտարանդիս ոչ արասցես, եւ զզաւրսն Հայոց Զարեհի ոչ հաւատասցես, հարկքն անաշխատ առ քեզ ոչ եկեսցեն:
| 55:5 Mazhan, descending to meet him, betrayed his brothers. “ Know, O king,” he said, “ that if you do not exile Artavazd and Tiran and if you do not entrust the Armenian troops to Zareh, the tribute will not be paid to you without a struggle:

55:6 Զայս արար Մաժան` քէն պահելով վասն Սմբատայ, զի եւ զնա նորա էր սնուցեալ. ընդ նմին եւ զՏիրան խորհեցաւ հանել, զի ինքն լիցի քրմապետ միանգամայն եւ սպարապետ արեւմտից:
| 55:6 This Mazhan did because of the rancor he nourished on Smbat’s behalf, for the latter had raised him. Likewise, he planned to expel Tiran so that he himself might become at once chief priest and commander of the east:

55:7 Զորմէ ոչ ինչ փոյթ արարեալ Տրայիանու, արձակէ ունայն:
| 55:7 But Trajan paid no attention to him and sent him away unsatisfied:

55:8 Իսկ Արտաւազդայ եւ Տիրանայ իմացեալ զխորհուրդն նորա` դարան գործեալ յորս սպանին զՄաժան, զոր տարեալ թաղեցին ի Բագնացն աւանի իբրեւ զքրմապետ:
| 55:8 When Artavazd and Tiran learned of his plan, they ambushed Mazhan in the hunt and killed him; then they took him and buried him in the town of Altars as chief priest:

55:9 Իսկ Արտաշէս յայնմ հետէ անսայթաք հարկեաց Տրայիանու, եւ յետ նորա Ադրիանոսի կայսեր զամենայն աւուրս իւր:
| 55:9 Thereafter Artashēs payed tribute to Trajan regularly, and after him to the Emperor Hadrian, all his days:
