61:1 Արտաւազդայ թագաւորութիւն, եւ հալածել զեղբարս իւր եւ զքորս, եւ մահ հանդերձ այլաբանելով:
| 61:1 Reign of Artavazd, the expulsion of his brothers and sisters, and his death with its allegory:

61:2 Յետ Արտաշիսի թագաւորէ Արտաւազդ որդի նորա, եւ հալածէ յԱյրարատոյ զամենայն եղբարս իւր ի գաւառս Աղիովտայ եւ Առբերանոյ, զի մի՛ բնակեսցեն յԱյրարատ ի կալուածս արքայի. բայց միայն զՏիրան պահէ փոխանորդ իւր, զի որդի ոչ գոյր նորա:
| 61:2 After Artashēs his son Artavazd came to the throne; he expelled all his brothers from Ayrarat to the provinces of Aḷiovit and Aṙberan so that they would not inhabit the royal estates in Ayrarat. He kept only Tiran his successor, for he had no son:

61:3 Որ յետ սակաւ ինչ աւուրց թագաւորելոյն իւրոյ, անցեալ զկամրջաւն Արտաշատ քաղաքի, որսալ կինճս եւ իշավայրիս զակամբք Գինայ, եւ աղմկեալ ի ցնորից իմն խելագարանաց, ընդ վայր յածելով երիվարաւն` անկանի ի խոր իմն մեծ, եւ խորասոյզ լեալ անհետի:
| 61:3 A few days after his accession he passed over the bridge of the city of Artashat to hunt wild asses around the springs of Gēn. Confused by some giddiness he thoughtlessly turned around on his horse and fell into a great pit and was swallowed up without a trace:

61:4 Զսմանէ երգիչքն Գողթան առասպելաբանեն այսպէս. եթէ ի մահուանն Արտաշիսի բազում կոտորածք լինէին ըստ աւրինի հեթանոսաց. դժուարի, ասեն, Արտաւազդ` ասելով ցհայրն. «Մինչ դու գնացեր, եւ զերկիրս ամենայն ընդ քեզ տարար, ես աւերակացս ո՞ւմ թագաւորեմ:
| 61:4 Of him the singers of Goḷt’n tell the following fable. At the death of Artashēs much slaughter took place according to pagan custom. Artavazd, they say, was displeased and said to his father: Since you went and took all the land with you, to what purpose shall I reign over these ruins:

61:5 Վասն որոյ անիծեալ զնա Արտաշիսի` ասաց այսպէս. «Եթէ դու յորս հեծցիս յԱզատն ի վեր ի Մասիս, զքեզ կալցին քաջք, տարցին յԱզատն ի վեր ի Մասիս. անդ կայցես, եւ զլոյս մի՛ տեսցես:
| 61:5 Therefore Artashēs cursed him in these words: If you go hunting up on Noble Masis, the spirits will seize you and take you up to Noble Masis; there you will remain and no more see the light:

61:6 Զրուցեն զսմանէ եւ պառաւունք, եթէ արգելեալ կայ յայրի միում, կապեալ երկաթի շղթայիւք. եւ երկու շունք հանապազ կրծելով զշղթայսն` ջանայ ելանել եւ առնել վախճան աշխարհի. այլ ի ձայնէ կռանահարութեան դարբնաց զաւրանան, ասեն, կապանքն:
| 61:6 The old women also tell of him that he is imprisoned in a cave, bound in iron chains, and two dogs continuously gnaw at the chains. He tries to go out and destroy the country, but at the sound of the hammering of smiths, they say, his bonds are strengthened:

61:7 Վասն որոյ եւ առ մերով իսկ ժամանակաւ բազումք ի դարբնաց, զհետ երթալով առասպելին` յաւուր միաշաբաթւոջ երիցս կամ չորիցս բախեն զսալն, զի զաւրասցին, ասեն, շղթայքն Արտաւազդայ:
| 61:7 Therefore, even in our own time many smiths, following the fable, on the first day of the week strike the anvil three or four times so that the chains of Artavazd may be strengthened, as they say:

61:8 Բայց է ճշմարտութեամբ այսպէս, որպէս ասացաքս վերագոյն:
| 61:8 But the truth of the matter is as we said above:

61:9 Այլ ոմանք ասեն եւ ի ծնանելն զսա դիպեալ պատահարաց իմն. զոր համարեցան կախարդել զսա կանանց զարմիցն Աժդահակայ. վասն որոյ զնոսա բազում չարչարեաց Արտաշէս:
| 61:9 But some say that at his birth a misfortune befell him. It was thought that the wives of the descendants of Azhdahak had set a spell upon him, and therefore Artashēs did them much harm:

61:10 Եւ զայս նոյն երգիչքն յառասպելին ասեն այսպէս. եթէ «Վիշապազունք գողացան զմանուկն Արտաւազդ, եւ դեւ փոխանակ եդին:
| 61:10 This the same singers express in the fable as follows: The descendants of the dragons stole the child Artavazd and put a dev in his place:

61:11 Բայց ինձ արդարացեալ թուի լուրն այն, թէ ի ծննդենէն եւեթ մոլորութեամբ լեալ, մինչ նովիմբ եւ վախճանեցաւ:
| 61:11 But this story seems to me more reliable, that from his birth he was merely mad until he died thereof:

61:12 Եւ առնու զթագաւորութիւնն Տիրան եղբայր նորին:
| 61:12 His brother Tiran ascended the throne after him:
