81:1 Եթէ ուստի՛ եւ զիա՛րդ ազգ Մամիկոնէից:
| 81:1 Whence and how the Mamikonian family arose:

81:2 Վախճանեալ Արտաշրի որդւոյ Սասանայ` թողու զթագաւորութիւնն Պարսից որդւոյ իւրում Շապհոյ:
| 81:2 When Artashir, son of Sasan, died, he left the throne of Persia to his son Shapuh:
|
81:3 Ի սորա աւուրս ասեն եկեալ ի Հայս նախնի ազգին Մամիկոնէից յարեւելից հիւսիսականէն, ի քաջատոհմիկ եւ ի գլխաւոր աշխարհէ եւ ամենայն հիւսիսականաց ազգաց առաջին ասեմ իսկ զՃենացն. որ ունին զրոյցս այսպիսիս:
| 81:3 In his days, they say, there came to Armenia the ancestor of the Mamikonian family from the northeast, from a valiant and noble land foremost among all the nations of the north, I mean the land of the Chinese, of whom the following tale is told:

81:4 Յամս կատարման կենացն Արտաշրի, Արբոկ ոմն Ճեն-բակուր, որպէս ասի ի նոցա լեզուն պատիւ թագաւորութեան. սորա երկու դայեկորդիք, Բղդոխ եւ Մամգոն անուն կոչեցեալ, մեծ նախարարք:
| 81:4 In the year of Artashir’s death a certain Arbok Chen- bakur, which means in their tongue “ honor of the kingdom, ’’ had two foster brothers called Bḷdokh and Mamgon, who were great princes:

81:5 Եւ չարախաւսեալ Բղդոխայն զՄամգոնայն` հրամայեաց թագաւորն Ճենաց Արբոկ սպանանել զՄամգոնն:
| 81:5 When Bḷdokh slandered Mamgon, the Chinese king Arbok ordered Mamgon to be killed:

81:6 Զոր իմացեալ Մամգոնայն` ոչ գայ ի կոչն արքայի, այլ փախուցեալ աղխիւ իւրով անկանի առ Արտաշիր թագաւորն Պարսից:
| 81:6 But when Mamgon heard of this he did not heed the king’s summons but fled with his entourage and came to Artashir, king of Persia:

81:7 Եւ Արբոկ հրեշտակս առաքէ խնդրել զնա. եւ ի չլսելն Արտաշրի` պատերազմ ի վերայ նորա յաւրինէ թագաւորն Ճենաց:
| 81:7 Arbok sent messengers to seek his extradition, and when Artashir refused, the king of China prepared for war against him:

81:8 Եւ իսկոյն մեռեալ Արտաշրի` թագաւորէ Շապուհ:
| 81:8 But at that point Artashir died and Shapuh came to the throne:
|
81:9 Արդ` թէպէտ եւ ոչ տայ Շապուհ զՄամգոնն ի ձեռս տեառն իւրոյ, այլ եւ ոչ յԱրեաց երկրին թողու. բայց ամենայն աղխիւն իւրով առաքէ զնա իբրեւ զվտարանդի առ գործակալս իւր որ ի Հայս:
| 81:9 Now although Shapuh did not hand over Mamgon to his lord, nonetheless he did not allow him to remain in the land of the Aryans but sent him with all his entourage, as if exiled, to his governors in Armenia:

81:10 Եւ յղէ առ թագաւորն Ճենաց` ասելով, թէ «Մի՛ թուեսցի քեզ դժուար, զի ի ձեռս քո ոչ կարացի տալ զՄամգոն. վասն զի երդուեալ էր նմա հաւրն իմոյ ի լոյսն արեգական. այլ վասն անխռով զքեզ առնելոյ` հալածեցի զնա յաշխարհէս իմմէ յեզր երկրի եւ ի մուտս արեւու, որ հաւասար է նմա մահու. եւ արդ մի՛ լիցի պատերազմ ընդ իս եւ ընդ քեզ:
| 81:10 And he sent word to the king of China, saying: “ May it not displease you that I was unable to hand over to you Mamgon, because my father had sworn to him by the light of the sun. But to cause you no trouble I have expelled him from my country to the edge of the earth in the west, which is equivalent to death for him. So, let there not be war between you and me:

81:11 Եւ զի քան զամենայն բնակեալս ի վերայ երեսաց երկրի խաղաղասէր ասեն գոլ զազգն Ճենաց` յանձն առնու առնել զհաշտութիւն. ուստի յայտ իսկ է, եթէ են արդարեւ խաղաղասէր եւ կենսասէր ազգն Ճենաց:
| 81:11 And because, as they say, the Chinese are the most peace loving of all the inhabitants on the face of the earth, he agreed to make peace. So, it is clear that the Chinese nation is truly devoted to peace and life:

81:12 Սքանչելի է եւ աշխարհն առատութեամբ ամենայն պտղոց, եւ գեղեցիկ բուսովք զարդարեալ, քրքմաւէտ եւ սիրամարգաշատ եւ բազմամետաքս, անբաւութիւն յամուրաց եւ հրեշից, եւ որ էշայծեմունսդ անուանեն. ուր հասարակաց կերակուր ասեն զառ մեզ պատուական եւ սակաւուց ճաշակելիս` զփասեան եւ զպոր, եւ այլք այսպիսիք:
| 81:12 Their land is wonderful in its abundance of all varieties of fruits; it is adorned with beautiful plants, rich in saffron, peacocks, and silk. It has untold numbers of gazelles and marvelous creatures and the animals called ‘‘ donkey goats.” There the food of common people, they say, is what among us is aristocratic and food for the few - the pheasant and the swan and other such delicacies:

81:13 Այլ զականց եւ զմարգարտաց ոչ ասեն գիտել զհամար մեծամեծացն. իսկ պատուականքս առ մեզ զգեստուց եւ սակաւուց ագանելիք` հասարակաց նոցա է զգեստ:
| 81:13 The number of precious stones and pearls of the magnates they say no one knows. And as for the garments which among us are the robes of the few, for them they are the common dress:

81:14 Եւ այս յաղագս աշխարհին Ճենաց:
| 81:14 So much for the land of China:

81:15 Իսկ Մամգոնայ յոչ կամաց եկեալ յաշխարհս մեր` հանդիպեցաւ գալստեանն Տրդատայ. եւ ոչ դարձաւ ընդ զաւրս Պարսից, այլ ամենայն աղխիւն իւրով ընդ առաջ գնաց նմա մեծաւ պատարագաւ. եւ Տրդատ ընկալաւ զնա, բայց ընդ իւր ի պատերազմ ոչ էառ յերկիրն Պարսից. այլ ետ տեղի աղխի նորա եւ ռոճիկ ի կերակուր, փոփոխելով տեղի ի տեղւոջէ ցբովանդակ ամս:
| 81:15 So Mamgon, having come to our country against his will, met the returning Trdat. He did not turn back with the Persian army but advanced with all his entourage to meet him with great presents. Trdat received him but did not take him with him in his war against Persia. However, he gave his entourage a place in which to settle and a stipend for food; he changed their residence from place to place for many years:
