17:1 Եթէ զիա՛րդ ի Շապհոյ խաբեցաւ Տիրան, երթալով ի կոչ նորա, եւ կուրացաւ ի նմանէ:
| 17:1 How Tiran was deceived by Shapuh when he went to his summons and was blinded by him:

17:2 Յետ այսր ամենայնի ամբարիշտն Յուլիանոս ըստ արժանի խորհրդոցն վէր ընկալեալ ի փորոտիսն` սատակի ի Պարսս:
| 17:2 After all this the impious Julian, in accordance with his just deserts, was wounded in the intestines and died in Persia:

17:3 Եւ զաւրացն դարձեալ, թագաւոր ունելով զՅոբիանոս, որ ի ճանապարհի վախճանեալ` ոչ ժամանեաց ի Բիւզանդիոն:
| 17:3 His army returned with Jovian as emperor, but he died on the road and did not reach Byzantium:

17:4 Իսկ արքային Պարսից Շապհոյ զհետ նոցա կրթեալ, եւ խաբկանաւք կոչէ զՏիրան առ ինքն, գրելով թուղթ այսպէս:
| 17:4 The Persian king Shapuh pressed behind them and deceitfully summoned Tiran to his presence by writing a letter in the following terms:

17:6 Մազդեզանց քաջ եւ բարձակից արեգական Շապուհ արքայից արքայ. ի բարւոջ մերում յիշեալ եղբայր սիրելի Տիրան Հայոց արքայ. ողջոյն շատ:
| 17:6 The most valiant of the Mazdaeans, the equal of the sun, Shapuh, king of kings, in our bounty have remembered our dear brother Tiran, king of Armenia, and send many greetings:

17:7 Ճշմարտիւ ի վերայ հասաք, եթէ զսէրն մեր հաստատուն պահեցեր, ոչ գալով ընդ կայսեր յաշխարհս Պարսից. այլ եւ զգունդն զոր էառ ի քէն` զհետ յղեալ կոչեցեր ի բաց:
| 17:7 We are truly convinced that you have kept firm your love for us by not coming with the emperor to the land of Persia but by recalling and sending back the army that he took from you:

17:8 Եւ զառաջինն զոր արարեր, գիտեմք, զի մի՛ ընդ աշխարհ քո անցանիցէ` արարեր, զոր ինքն իսկ առնելոց էր. ուստի եւ մեր պահապանք գնդին վատասրտեալ ի բաց եկին, զքեզ պատճառելով. վասն որոյ մեր ցասուցեալ` սալարի նոցա ցլու արբուցաք արիւն:
| 17:8 And your first action we know you undertook to prevent him crossing your country, which he was about to do. So, when our garrison lost heart and departed, they alleged that you were the cause. Therefore, in our anger we made their general drink bull’s blood:

17:9 Եւ քում թագաւորութեանդ ոչ ինչ վնասեսցուք, երդուեալ ի Միհր մեծ աստուած. միայն փութա՛ տեսանել զմեզ, զի խորհել ինչ մարթասցուք վասն հասարակաց աւգտի:
| 17:9 And we shall in no way harm your kingdom, we swear by the great god Mihr. Only hurry to us that we may make plans for our common advantage:

17:10 Զայս տեսեալ Տիրանայ` խելագարեալ գնաց առ նա. քանզի արժանն տանէր զնա ի տեղի հատուցմանն:
| 17:10 When Tiran saw this, he lost his senses and went to him, for justice drew him to the place of retribution:

17:11 Զոր տեսեալ Շապհոյ` կշտամբեաց զնա բանիւք յանդիման զաւրաց իւրոց, եւ զաչս նորա կուրացոյց` որպէս զՍեդեկիային այնու ի հնումն. թէ եւ արդեաւք վրէժս ընդ սրբոյ առնն այնորիկ պահանջեցաւ, որով լուսաւորէր աշխարհս, ըստ Աւետարանին ձայնի` գոլով լոյս աշխարհի, յորմէ խաւարեցոյց Տիրան զՀայս:
| 17:11 When Shapuh saw him he verbally stigmatized him in front of his own army and blinded his eyes like Sedekia of old [cf. 4 Kings 25:7]. So rightly vengeance was exacted for that saintly man by whom our land was illuminated, according to the saying of the Gospel, “ being the light of the world” [John 8:12, 9:5] - of which Tiran deprived Armenia:

17:12 Խաւարեցաւ եւ ինքն, կալեալ զթագաւորութիւնն ամս մետասան:
| 17:12 So he too was deprived of the light after reigning for eleven years:
