27:1 Եթէ ո՛րպէս Արշակաւան շինեցաւ եւ կոտորեցաւ, եւ առաւ Անի:
| 27:1 How Arshakavan was built and destroyed, and Ani taken:

27:2 Բայց Արշակ եւս ժպրհեցաւ առնել գործ անմտութեան:
| 27:2 But Arshak even more presumptuously undertook a senseless project:
|
27:3 Ի թիկանց կուսէ լերինն Մասեաց շինեաց ձեռակերտ, ժողով մարդկան մեղաւորաց. եւ ետ հրաման, որ ոք անկեալ անդր բնակեսցէ` մի՛ լիցի ի վերայ նորա իրաւունք դատաստանի:
| 27:3 On the rear side of Mount Masis he built a town as a gathering place for criminals, and he ordered that whoever took refuge and dwelt there should be free from the laws of justice:

27:4 Եւ նոյն ժամայն ծովացեալ լցաւ մարդկութեամբ հովիտն ամենայն. քանզի աւանդառուք եւ պարտականք, եւ ծառայք եւ վնասակարք, եւ գողք եւ սպանողք, եւ կնահանք եւ այլք այսպիսիք փախուցեալք անդր անկանէին, եւ ոչ կայր նոցա այց եւ խնդիր:
| 27:4 Immediately the whole valley was filled with a sea of men; for trustees, debtors, slaves, delinquents, thieves, murderers, divorced men, and other such people fled there for refuge, and there was no punishment or investigation:

27:5 Եւ բազում անգամ բողոքեալ նախարարացն` եւ ոչ ինչ լուաւ նոցա Արշակ. մինչեւ առ Շապուհ եւս ունել նոցա բողոք:
| 27:5 The princes often complained but Arshak did not listen to them. They eventually complained to Shapuh:

27:6 Եւ եղեւ ի դառնալն Շապհոյ ի Յունաց` առաքեաց զմի ի սպարապետաց իւրոց եւ հայ գունդ ընդ նմա, եթէ դէպ լինի, ունել զԱրշակ. եւ նա խոյս ետ ի նոցանէ զկողմամբք Կաւկասու, Վրաց միաբանելով:
| 27:6 When Shapuh returned from Greece he sent one of his generals with an Armenian force to capture Arshak if the opportunity should arise. But he fled from them to the regions of the Caucasus and joined forces with the Georgians:

27:7 Իսկ սպարապետն Պարսից եկեալ ի Հայս` ի ձեռնտու լինելոյ նախարարացն առնու զամուրն Անի, եւ գերէ զամենայն գանձս արքունի որ ի նմա, այլ եւ զոսկերս թագաւորացն. ոչ գիտեմ, թէ վասն նախատի՞նս առնելոյ Արշակայ, եթէ վասն հմայից ինչ հեթանոսականաց:
| 27:7 When the Persian general arrived in Armenia, with the help of the princes he captured the fortress of Ani and seized all the royal treasures in it, even the bones of the kings. I do not know if this was to insult Arshak or for some pagan incantations:

27:8 Զոր ապա մաղթեալ նախարարացն` թափեալ թաղեցին յաւանին յԱղցս, որ յոտին Արագած կոչեցեալ լերինն:
| 27:8 Then the nobles requested the bones, and gaining possession of them buried them in the town of Aḷts’k’ at the foot of the mountain called Aragats:

27:9 Քանզի ոչ գիտացին ընտրել զոսկերս հեթանոսաց եւ հաւատացելոց, զի ընդ միմեանս էր խառնակեալ գերողացն, յաղագս այնր ոչ արժանի համարեցան ի դիրս սրբոցն թաղել ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի:
| 27:9 For they could not distinguish the bones of heathens and believers, since the depredators had jumbled them together. For that reason, they were not considered worthy to be buried in the saints’ resting places in the city of Vaḷarshapat:

27:10 Եւ նախարարացն Հայոց ժողովեալ` դիմեցին ի վերայ արքունական ձեռակերտին Արշակաւանի, եւ հարին զնա սրով սուսերի յառնէ մինչեւ ցկին, բայց ի տղայոց ստնդիացաց. քանզի դառնացեալք էին իւրաքանչիւր ի վերայ ծառայից իւրեանց եւ յանցաւորաց:
| 27:10 The Armenian princes joined forces and attacked the royal city of Arshakavan, putting to the sword men and women, except suckling infants, for each one of them was embittered against his own slaves and criminals:

27:11 Զոր թէպէտ եւ վաղ գիտացեալ մեծին Ներսիսի` ոչ յառաջ քան զկոտորելն ժամանեաց հասանել. այլ ի կատար գործոյն հասեալ` եգիտ բաժանեալ զտղայս կոտորելոցն, զի վարեսցեն ի գերութիւն որպէս զհեռաւոր թշնամեաց:
| 27:11 Although Nersēs the Great was quickly informed of the matter he did not arrive in time before the slaughter, but at the end of the affair he found the infants of those slaughtered set on one side to be taken into captivity like children of distant enemies:

27:12 Զորս թափեալ մեծին Ներսիսի, հրամայեաց կրել որթովք ի գոմ մի, եւ դարմանս եւ սնուցողս նոցին կարգեաց. որք յետոյ աւանացեալ անուանեցան Որթք այնորիկ աղագաւ:
| 27:12 Nersēs the Great freed them, ordered them to be carried in baskets to a stable, and arranged care and nurses for them. The spot later became a town and was called Ort’k’ [“baskets”] for that reason:
