35:1 Յաղագս չարեացն որ անցին ընդ Հայս ի Շապհոյ, եւ մահն Արշակայ:
| 35:1 Concerning the misfortunes brought upon Armenia by and the death of Arshak:

35:2 Իբրեւ գիտացին նախարարք Հայոց, այնք, որոց նախ քան զԱրշակ ձեռն տուեալ էր Շապուհ արքայ Պարսից, թէ եւ զնոցա կանայսն խնդրեալ է իբրեւ զայնց, որք առ Արշակայն էին միամիտք, եւ զայն եւս տեսին, եթէ գնաց Ալանաոզան, եւ գունդ փոքր է որ վասն այնր է եկեալ` միաբանեալ հալածեցին զնոսա. եւ իւրեանց առեալ զկանայս եւ զորդիս` փախեան յաշխարհն Յունաց:
| 35:2 When the Armenian princes who had given assistance to Shapuh, the Persian king, rather than to Arshak realized that he was demanding their wives as well as those of the princes who had remained loyal to Arshak, and when they also saw that Alanaozan had departed while the force that had come for that purpose was small, they combined to expel them. Then they took their wives and children and fled to the land of the Greeks:

35:3 Նա եւ ոչ դշխոյն Փառանձեմ գնաց ի կոչ առնն իւրոյ, այլ հանդերձ գանձիւք անկաւ յամուրն Արտագերից. լուր առնելով առ որդին իւր Պապ, յուսայր ապրել ի ձեռաց Շապհոյ:
| 35:3 Likewise Queen P’aṙandzem did not obey her husband’s summons, but with the treasures took refuge in the castle of Artagerk’ and warned her son Pap, hoping to escape from Shapuh’s hands:

35:4 Ընդ որս զչարեալ Շապուհ կապէ զոտս Արշակայ երկաթեղէն շղթայիւք, եւ տայ տանել յերկիրն Խուժաստանի յԱնուշն կոչեցեալ բերդ:
| 35:4 But Shapuh, incensed at them, bound Arshak’s feet in iron chains and had him taken to the land of Khuzastan to the fortress called Anush:

35:5 Եւ բազում զաւրս գումարեալ ի ձեռն Մեհրուժանայ Արծրունւոյ եւ Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի, ուրացողաց զՔրիստոս, արձակէ յաշխարհս Հայոց. որք եկեալ նստան շուրջ զբերդաւն Արտագերից:
| 35:5 Gathering many troops under Mehrujan Artsruni and Vahan Mamikonian, apostates of Christ, he attacked Armenia. They came and invested the castle of Artagerk’:

35:6 Եւ թէպէտ ոչ ինչ կարէին առնել նմա վասն անմատչելի ամրութեանն, բայց զի բարկութիւնն Աստուծոյ էր ի վերայ Արշակայ` մարդիկ ամրոցին ոչ անսացին մնալ համբաւուն Պապայ, այլ անձնատուրք եղեն ի կամաց, եւ ոչ ի բռնութենէ:
| 35:6 And although they were unable to take it because of its impenetrable defenses, yet because God’s anger was on Arshak the garrison of the fortress refused to wait for news of Pap and surrendered willingly, without compulsion:

35:7 Զորս գերեալ հանդերձ գանձիւքն եւ տիկնաւն Փառանձեմաւ խաղացուցին ի յԱսորեստան. եւ անդ ընդ սայլի ցից հանեալ` սատակեցին:
| 35:7 Taking them captive with the treasures and Queen P’aṙandzem they brought them to Assyria. And there they massacred them by impaling them on wagon poles:

35:8 Ի նմին ժամու եհաս հրաման ի Շապհոյ արքայէ, զի քանդեալ աւերեսցեն զամրութիւն ամենայն քաղաքաց, եւ զՀրեայսն խաղացուսցեն ի գերութիւն, եւ զայն Հրեայսն, որ նովին հրէութեան աւրինաւք կային ի Վանն Տոսպայ, զորս ածեալ էր Բարզափրանայ Ռըշտունւոյ յաւուրս Տիգրանայ. զորս բնակեցոյց Շապուհ յԱսպահան:
| 35:8 At the same time there arrived a command from King Shapuh that they should destroy and raze the fortifications of all cities and bring the Jews into captivity, including those Jews living by the same Jewish law in Van Tosp whom Barzap’ran Ṙshtuni had brought there in the days of Tigran. These Shapuh settled in Isfahan:

35:9 Գերեցին եւ զայն Հրեայսն որք յԱրտաշատ եւ ի Վաղարշապատ, զորս ածեալ էր նոյն Տիգրանայ արքայի, որք յաւուրս սրբոյն Գրիգորի եւ Տրդատայ հաւատացեալ էին ի Քրիստոս. ընդ որս եւ զԶուիթայ երէց Արտաշատու:
| 35:9 They also took into captivity the Jews in Artashat and Vaḷarshapat whom the same king Tigran had brought there and who in the days of Saint Gregory and Trdat had believed in Christ; these included Zuit’ay, the priest of Artashat:

35:10 Յայնժամ մատուցեալ առ Շապուհ Մեհրուժան եւ Վահան չարախաւսէին զԶուիթայ երիցուէ Արտաշատու, եթէ յայն սակս եկն ընդ գերութիւնն, զի խրատեսցէ զնոսա պինդ ունել զաւրէնս քրիստոնէութեան:
| 35:10 Then Mehrujan and Vahan approached Shapuh and calumniated Zuit’ay, the priest of Artashat, saying that he had come with the captives to urge them to adhere firmly to the Christian religion:

35:11 Վասն որոյ Շապուհ հրամայեաց չարչարել զԶուիթայ, զի թողցէ զաւրէնս քրիստոնէութեան. որում ոչ հաւանեալ, կատարեցաւ:
| 35:11 Therefore Shapuh ordered Zuit’ay to be tortured so that he might abandon the Christian religion, but as he refused to do that he was martyred:

35:12 Զայս ամենայն աղէտս թշուառութեանց լուեալ Արշակայ` սաւուղաբար արար ընդ անձին իւրում. որ թագաւորեաց ամս երեսուն:
| 35:12 When Arshak heard of all these sad calamities he committed suicide like Saul [cf. 1 Kings 31:4; 1 Chron. 10:4]. He had reigned for thirty years:
