42:1 Յաղագս բաժանելոյ Հայոց ընդ երկուս ի ձեռն երկուց թագաւորացն Արշակունեաց, ի ծառայութիւն երկուց ազգաց` Պարսից եւ Յունաց:
| 42:1 Concerning the division of Armenia into two under the two Arsacid kings in subjection to two nations- the Persians and the Greeks:

42:2 Իմացեալ Շապհոյ, թէ թերուղիղ է Արկադ` խաւսի ընդ նմա խաղաղութիւն. քանզի էր պարտեալ հարեալ ի հաւրէ նորա ի մեծէն Թէոդոսէ:
| 42:2 When Shapuh realized that Arcadius was a deceitful man, he made overtures for peace to him since he had been defeated and beaten by his father Theodosius the Great:

42:3 Յանձն առնու եւ Արկադ առնել զհաշտութիւն, առաւել յիւրոց զաւրագլխացն. զի թէպէտ եւ յԱստուծոյ էր պարգեւեալ զյաղթութիւն յամս կենաց երանելւոյն Թէոդոսի, սակայն զաւրագլուխքն վաստակեալ` ձանձրացեալ լինէին յաշխատութենէ հանապազորդ պատերազմացն:
| 42:3 Arcadius agreed to make a treaty, especially at the urging of his generals. For although God had granted them victory in the years when the blessed Theodosius was alive, nonetheless the generals were weary and exhausted from the effort of continuous warfare:

42:4 Վասն որոյ հաւանեալ` կամաւ յանձն առին բաժանել զՄիջագետս եւ զՀայոց աշխարհս կրկին սահմանադրութեամբ:
| 42:4 Therefore they came to terms and willingly agreed to divide Mesopotamia and Armenia by a new boundary:

42:5 Վասն որոյ թողեալ Արշակայ զբուն թագաւորութիւն հարց իւրոց զԱյրարատ, եւ զամենայն մասն բաժնին Պարսից` գնաց տիրել արեւմտեայ կողմանց աշխարհիս մերոյ, որ ի մասն ի բաժնին Յունաց. ոչ միայն մաւրն աղագաւ, որ էր ի կայսերական քաղաքին, այլ լաւ համարեալ նուազ կողմանն տիրել` եւ ծառայել քրիստոնեայ թագաւորի, քան յոլովից իշխել` եւ մտանել ընդ լծով հեթանոսաց:
| 42:5 So Arshak left the native kingdom of his fathers, Ayrarat, and all the part of the Persian sector, and went to rule over the western regions of our country, in the Greek sector, not only because of his mother who was in the imperial capital, but because he thought that it was better to rule over a smaller region and serve a Christian king than to control most of the country and submit to the yoke of heathens:

42:6 Գնացին զհետ նորա հանդերձ կանամբք եւ որդւովք եւ նախարարութիւնք որ ի բաժնին Շապհոյ, թողլով զիւրաքանչիւր արարս եւ զգիւղս եւ զդաստակերտս:
| 42:6 The princes of Shapuh’s sector followed him with their wives and sons, abandoning each one’s possessions and villages and estates:

42:7 Ընդ որ զչարեալ Շապհոյ, գրէ առ Արշակ, թէ «Ընդէ՞ր գրգռեցեր զպատերազմ ի մէջ իմ եւ կայսեր, տանելով զնախարարութիւնս իմոյ բաժնիս:
| 42:7 Vexed at this, Shapuh wrote to Arshak: “ Why did you provoke war between me and the emperor by leading away the princely families from my sector:

42:8 Եւ պատասխանի լսէ յԱրշակայ, թէ «Վասն զի ոչ համբերէին ընդ Պարսիկ առաջնորդաւ վարիլ` եկին զհետ իմ. եւ արդ եթէ հաւատաս ցիս զմասինդ քո իշխանութիւն, որպէս եւ կայսր զիւրոյս` պատրաստ եմ ի պաշտել զքեզ` որպէս զկայսր. ապա թէ ոչ է հաճոյ քեզ այս, եւ իւրեանց կամաւ դարձցին առ քեզ նախարարքս` ոչ արգելում:
| 42:8 He received in reply from Arshak: “ Because they could not bear to live under a Persian ruler, they followed me. Now if you entrust me with the government of your part, as the emperor has for his, I am ready to serve you as I serve the emperor. But if this is not pleasing to you and the princes return to you of their own will, I shall not prevent them:

42:9 Զայս լուեալ Շապհոյ` թագաւորեցոյց Հայոց ի վերայ բաժնի իւրոյ զԽոսրով ոմն ի նմին ազգէն Արշակունեաց. եւ առ նախարարս իւրոյ մասինն, որ ելեալ էին զհետ Արշակայ` գրեաց հրովարտակ, որ ունէր զայս:
| 42:9 When Shapuh heard this he made a certain Khosrov from the same Arsacid family king of Armenia over his own sector, and to the princes of his part who had followed Arshak he wrote an edict, which ran as follows:

42:11 Դիւցազանց քաջ, Շապուհ արքայից արքայ. նախարարաց Հայոց, որոց կալուած իշխանութեան յիմ բաժնին հատան. ողջոյն շատ շնորհեմ ձեզ:
| 42:11 The most valiant of the heroes, Shapuh king of kings, to the Armenian princes whose territories fall in my sector, I send you many greetings:

42:12 Թէպէտ եւ ձեր ոչ ազատաբար արարեալ, թողէք զիւրաքանչիւր իշխանութիւնս, եւ մեզ ոչ ինչ նիազ էր ի ձէնջ, սակայն ըստ տիրաբար խնամոց գթացաք ի ձեզ եւ յաշխարհդ ձեր. զմտաւ ածեալ, եթէ ոչ կարեն հաւտք առանց հովուաց լինել, եւ հովիւք առանց բարիոք վերակացուի, վասն որոյ թագաւորեցուցաք ձեզ զԽոսրով ոմն ի դենէ ձերմէ, եւ յազգէ բնիկ ձերոյ տէրութեանդ:
| 42:12 Although you did not act nobly in leaving each one’s territory, and although we needed nothing from you, nonetheless in accordance with our royal solicitude we have had mercy on you and your country. Considering that flocks cannot be without shepherds or shepherds without a good overseer, we have therefore made as your king a certain Khosrov of your own religion and from the family of your original royalty:

42:13 Արդ` դարձեալ ձեր յիւրաքանչիւր արարս իշխեցէք, որպէս եւ ցայժմ:
| 42:13 So return and govern each of your possessions as you did up to now:
|
42:14 Երդուեալ ի հուր եւ ի ջուր եւ ի փառս անմահից իմոց նախնեաց, զի առանց նենգութեան եւ պատրանաց արարաք զայդ, եւ անշրջելի պահեմք:
| 42:14 We swear by fire and water and the glory of my immortal ancestors that we have done this without deceit or fraud and will keep it irrevocably:

42:15 Իսկ այնք որք ոչ լուիցեն հրամանաց մերոց` զտունս նոցա հանդերձ գիւղաւք եւ դաստակերտաւք հրամայեցաք ունել յարքունիս:
| 42:15 But as for those who do not obey our commands, we have ordered their domains with the villages and estates to be confiscated to the royal treasury:
