55:1 Կրկին թագաւորելն Հայոց Խոսրովայ, եւ յետ նորա Շապհոյ պարսկի:
| 55:1 Khosrov’s reign in Armenia for the second time, and after him that of Shapuh the Persian:

55:2 Վռամշապուհ թագաւորեալ ամս քսան եւ մի` մեռանի, թողլով որդի տասնամեայ, անուն Արտաշէս:
| 55:2 Vṙamshapuh died after a reign of twenty- one years, leaving a ten- year- old son called Artashēs:

55:3 Յայնմ ժամանակի երթեալ մեծին Սահակայ ի դուռն արքային Պարսից Յազկերտի` խնդրել զկապեալն Խոսրով, որ զկնի մահուանն Արտաշրի լուծեալ պահեցաւ արձակ յԱնուշն կոչեցեալ բերդի յաւուրս Վռամայ:
| 55:3 Then Sahak the Great went to the court of the Persian king Yazkert to request the imprisoned Khosrov, who after Artashir’s death had been released from bonds but kept unfettered in the castle called Anush during the lifetime of Vṙamshapuh:

55:4 Եւ Յազկերտի հաւանեալ` կատարէ զհայեցուածսն. տալով նմա զտէրութիւնն` արձակէ ի Հայս:
| 55:4 Yazkert agreed and fulfilled his requests; restoring the throne to him Khosrov, he sent him to Armenia:
|
55:5 Սա խնդրեաց զՀրահատ որդի Գազաւոնի, զոր յետ հաւրն նորա մահուան հանեալ յԱնյիշելի ամրոցէն` անդր եւս քան զՍագաստան էր գումարեալ. զոր ոչ ժամանեաց տեսանել Խոսրով, մի եւեթ ի կրկնումն թագաւորեալ ամ:
| 55:5 He, Khosrov requested Hrahat, son of Gazavon, who after his father’s death had been taken from the fortress of Anyisheli and exiled beyond Sagastan. But Khosrov did not live to see him since he reigned for the second time only for one year:

55:6 Յետ որոյ Յազկերտի ոչ եւս ի նոցունց, այլ զՇապուհ զորդի իւր թագաւորեցուցեալ Հայոց, հնարս դառնութեան խորհելով, իբր թէ այնպէս հանապազ առ նմա լինելով նախարարքն յանգչիցին խաւսիւք, տուրեւառիւք, խրախճանութեամբ եւ զբաւսանաւք որսոց, այլ եւ եկամուտ հարազատութեամբ մերձաւորեսցին խնամութեամբ. զի մարթ լիցի զնոսա եւ ի դեն մազդեզանց սաղապեցուցանել, որով ամենեւիմբ զատչիցին ի Յունաց. ոչ գիտելով անմիտն, թէ «Տէր ցրուէ զխորհուրդս հեթանոսաց». թէպէտ առ ժամայն աջողեցաւ:
| 55:6 After that Yazkert made king of Armenia no more of their own line but his own son Shapuh with the malicious intention that thus by being continually with him, the princes might become attached to him by social intercourse, festivities, and the pleasures of the chase and that by marriage with foreigners they would become related to him, so that he might be able to seduce them to the Mazdaean religion, whereby they would be completely separated from the Greeks. But the senseless man did not realize that “ the Lord scatters the intentions of the heathen” [Ps. 32:10], although for a time he had success:

55:7 Քանզի մեռեալ Համազասպայ, եւ ի սգի մեծի եղեալ Սահակայ` ոչ ոք ի միաբանութիւն հաւաքեաց զգունդս Հայոց:
| 55:7 After Hamazasp died and when Sahak was in mourning, nobody brought the Armenian troops into unity:

55:8 Վասն որոյ դիւրամուտ եղեւ յաշխարհս Շապուհ, ընդ իւր ածելով զՀրահատ եւ զամենայն վտարանդիսն, սակայն ոչ կարաց հաճել զմիտս նախարարացն, ամենեցուն ատեցեալ զնա, եւ ոչ արքայաւրէն մեծարէին զնա յորս կամ ի խաղու:
| 55:8 Therefore Shapuh easily entered the country, bringing with him Hrahat and all the exiles. But he was unable to win over the minds of the princes, since they all hated him. Nor did they honor him in royal fashion in the hunt or at sport:

55:9 Էր երբեմն զհետ երամակաց ցռուց յանդգնագոյնս արշաւել ընդ խորտաբորտս եւ ընդ վիմուտ տեղիս. յորմէ կասել սկսաւ Շապուհ:
| 55:9 It happened once that in hot pursuit of herds of wild asses they rode into difficult and rocky parts. Shapuh began to withdraw:

55:10 Իսկ Ատոմայ Մոկացւոյ եպերեալ զնա` ասէ. «Գնա՛, գնա՛, աստուածորդիդ Պարսից, եթէ այր իցես:
| 55:10 but Atom of Mokk’ taunted him, saying: “ Go on, go on, Persian hero, if you are a man:
|
55:11 Եւ նա ասէ. «Դո՛ւ երթիջիր, զի ի քարինս դիւաց է շահատակել:
| 55:11 He replied: “ You proceed, for it is the mark of demons to attack rocks:
|
55:12 Դարձեալ յայլում ժամու դիպեցաւ ի շամբս կինջս որսալ հրով, եւ Շապհոյ ոչ համարձակեալ ի թաւուն քաջարշաւ լինել, մինչեւ շրջապատէր հուրն. եւ նորա զհայեցուածսն յերկուս բաժանեալ` այսր անդր բերեալ լինէր երիվարաւն:
| 55:12 Again another time they were hunting wild boars among reeds with fire, and Shapuh did not dare to gallop through the dense growth while the fire surrounded it. And looking to both sides he rode this way and that:

55:13 Միւսանգամ ասէ Ատոմ. «Աստուածորդիդ Պարսից, ահա հայր քո եւ աստուած, ընդէ՞ր զանգիտես:
| 55:13 A second time Atom said to him: “ Persian hero, behold your father is a god, why do you hesitate:
|
55:14 Իսկ Շապուհ ասէ. «Թողեալ ի բաց զկատակելդ` յանցանել ընդ հուրդ դարձո՛ զքեզ, որ եւ ես զկնի քո. քանզի յառաջելն` ձիս իմ խրտչի:
| 55:14 But Shapuh said: “ Stop your mocking, cross the fire so that I can follow. Because if I go first my horse will shy:

55:15 Յայնժամ այպանեաց զնա Ատոմ` ասելով. «Միթէ եւ այդ քարի՞նք իցեն, զի ես յառաջեցից. եւ արդ` եթէ դու զՄոկացիս կոչես դիւազգիս` ես զՍասանեանսդ կոչեմ կնամարդիս:
| 55:15 Then Atom derided him: “ Surely these are not stoning that I should go first. And so, if you call the Mokats’ik’ demons, I call you Sasanians effeminate:

55:16 Եւ մտրակեալ զերիվարն` իբրեւ ընդ հովիտ ծաղկանց անցանէր ընդ հուրն, զերծուցանելով զՇապուհ:
| 55:16 And spurring his horse he crossed the fire as if it were a meadow of flowers, freeing Shapuh:

55:17 Եւ յետ այնր գիտացեալ, եթէ նմա լուռ ոչ լինի` անցեալ ի Մոկացն գնայր յաշխարհ:
| 55:17 After that he knew that Shapuh would not remain silent, so he went over to the land of Mokk’:
|
55:18 Այլ երբեմն ի մականական խաղուն երկիցս պատահեաց Շաւասպայ Արծրունւոյ զգնդակն հանել ի Շապհոյ:
| 55:18 On another occasion at the titling match, Shavasp Artsruni twice succeeded in knocking the ball from Shapuh:

55:19 Եւ նորա ածեալ նմա մականաւն` ասէ. «Ծանի՛ր զքեզ:
| 55:19 The latter struck him with the stick, saying: “ Learn your place:
|
55:20 Իսկ նորա պատասխանեալ, թէ «Այո՛, ասէ, ճանաչեմ եւ զիս արքայորդի ի սերմանէ Սանասարայ, եւ ունիմ իշխանութիւն ընդ եղբարս քո զբարձն արքայի համբուրել, որպէս եւ անուանակոչեցեալս եմ:
| 55:20 He replied: “ Yes, I know that I am the son of a king from the seed of Sanasar, and I have the right with your brothers to kiss the king’s cushion, just as my name indicates:

55:21 Եւ զայս ասացեալ յոյժ քամահաբար, ի ձիարձակարանէն արփայագնաց լինէր:
| 55:21 Having said this very scornfully, he flew from the hippodrome:

55:22 Դարձեալ երբեմն ի խնջոյս ուրախութեան Խոսրով Գարդմանացի ի գինւոջ զեղխեալ առաջի Շապհոյ` զաւրէն սեղեխի տռփեցելոյ զհետ ջնարահար քաջամատն կնոջ կրթէր:
| 55:22 Again once in the jollity of a banquet Khosrov Gardmanats’i, drunk with wine in the presence of Shapuh, showed a lustful passion for a woman playing the lyre with skillful fingers:

55:23 Ընդ որ ցասուցեալ Շապհոյ` հրամայէ ունել զնա եւ ի դահլճին պահել. այլ նա ի վաղակաւորն հաստատեալ զաջն, պէս գունակ Տրդատայ Բագրատունւոյ, յիւր տունն անցեալ գնայր, եւ ոչ ոք ի սպասաւորացն արքունի համարձակեալ արկանել ի նա ձեռն, յառաջագոյն գիտելով զփորձ առնն:
| 55:23 Angered at this Shapuh ordered him to be arrested and held in the hall. But he, putting his right hand to his dagger, like Trdat Bagratuni went out to his own house without any of the royal servants daring to lay a hand on him, since they previously knew what sort of man he was:

55:24 Եւ զայս պատմել մեզ` քոյդ հարկաւորեաց ընդ վայր խնդիր:
