57:1 Առաքումն Մեսրոպայ ի Բիւզանդիոն, եւ պատճէն թղթոցն հնգից:
| 57:1 The mission of Mesrop to Byzantium and copies of five letters:

57:2 Իսկ իբրեւ ետես մեծն Սահակ զայս ամենայն չարիս ի մասինն Պարսից` գնաց նա զկողմամբք արեւմտից մերոյ աշխարհիս, ի բաժին մասինն Յունաց, եւ ոչ ըստ արժանեաց իւրոց եղեւ ընկալեալ. վասն որոյ յղէ զՄեսրոպ եւ զՎարդան թոռն իւր ի Բիւզանդիոն առ կայսրն Թէոդոս հանդերձ թղթով, որ ունէր զայս:
| 57:2 When Sahak the Great saw all these misfortunes in the Persian sector, he went to the western regions of our land to the Greek part but was not received in a suitably worthy fashion. Therefore, he sent Mesrop and Vardan, his own grandson, to the emperor Theodosius in Byzantium with a letter, which ran as follows:

| 57:4 To the peace- loving emperor, my lord Augustus Theodosius, Sahak bishop of Armenia, greetings in the Lord:

57:5 Գիտեմ, զի համբաւ նեղութեանս մերոյ հասեալ է ի լսելիս ինքնակալիդ. սակս որոյ յուսալով ի գթածութիւն բարերարութեանդ քոյ` դիմեալ ապաւինեցայ յոտս ձեր. եւ ոչ հանդիպեցայ ընդունելութեան յիմում վիճակիս ի հրամանէ վերակացուացս սոցա:
| 57:5 I know that news of our distress has reached the ears of your majesty. Therefore, trusting in your merciful kindness, I came to take refuge at your feet, but at the command of your governors I did not encounter the welcome due to my see:

57:6 Այնչափ ատեցեալ զմեզ, մինչեւ զնշանագիրսն անգամ ոչ ընկալան, զորս եբեր նոյն այր` զոր առաքեցի առ ձեր բարերարութիւնդ, բազում անգամ ճգնեալ դորա յԱսորւոց աշխարհին:
| 57:6 They so hated us that they did not even accept the alphabet brought, after many tribulations in Syria, by the same man whom I have sent to your benevolence:

57:7 Արդ` հաճոյ թուեսցի տէրութեանդ ձերում` ոչ անիշխան առնել զմեզ ի մերում վիճակիս, եւ հրամայել ընդունել զմեզ եւ զվարդապետութիւնս մեր:
| 57:7 May it now please your majesty not to render us powerless in our own see but to order that we and our teaching be received:

57:12 Յուսացեալ ի ձեր սրբութիւնդ առաքեցաք զուսուցող մերոյ աշխարհիս զՄեսրոպ, եւ զթոռն իմ զՎարդան, որպէս զի լուեալ քո ի դոցանէ զաղէտս նեղութեան մերոյ, բարեխաւսեալ առ մեծի թագաւորիդ` աւգնեսցես մեզ, որպէս արդարեւ եղբայր սիրելի:
| 57:12 Trusting in your holiness we have sent the teacher of our land, Mesrop, and my grandson Vardan, so that when you hear from them the plight of our affliction you may help us by interceding with the great emperor like a truly dear brother:

57:17 Շնորհ ունիմ Աստուծոյ յաղագս զքեզ պատրաստելոյ մեզ յապաւինութիւն. վասն որոյ զգացուցանեմ` զի ի հայթայթանս մերոյ նեղութեանս առաքեցի զուսուցողդ մեր զՄեսրոպ եւ զթոռն իմ զՎարդան ի դուռն արքունի. եւ աղաչեմ զքո քաջութիւնդ ձեռնտու լինել ճանապարհիդ:
| 57:17 I thank God for your preparing for us a refuge. Therefore, I inform you that for the relief of our affliction I have sent our teacher Mesrop and my grandson Vardan to the royal court. And I beseech your valiant lordship to assist their journey:

57:19 Զայս տեսեալ Անատոլեայ, միանգամայն եւ զլուր առաքինութեանն Մեսրոպայ յիշեալ, որ յառաջագոյն հնչեցեալ էր զնմանէ` ոչ փոքր ինչ արար նոցա ընդունելութիւն, մինչեւ ի ձեռն փոփոխ ընթացից գրով զգացուցեալ կայսերն` առնու հրաման` արժանապէս առաքել փութով:
| 57:19 When Anatolius saw this he immediately recalled the fame of Mesrop’s virtue, which had earlier been noised abroad concerning him, and he gave them no mean welcome, even informing the emperor by an exchange of correspondence. He received the order to send them on quickly and in an honorable fashion:

57:20 Վասն որոյ արգելեալ ի քաղաքին Մելիտինէ զբազմութիւն աշակերտացն, զորս ընդ ինքեան ածեալ` հանդերձ գլխաւորաւն նոցա Ղեւոնդիւ առ եպիսկոպոսին Ակակայ թողու:
| 57:20 Therefore he, Mesrop kept in the city of Melitene with the bishop Acacius most of the pupils whom he had brought with him, including their deacon Leontius:

57:21 Եւ իւր առեալ զՄեսրոպ եւ զՎարդան` տայ ցեպիսկոպոսն Դերջանու ցԳինդ, եւ բարեփառութեամբ զնոսա յուղարկէ:
| 57:21 He himself Anatolius took Mesrop and Vardan, entrusted them to the bishop of Derjan, Gind, and escorted them off with great honor:

57:22 Որով մտին ի Բիւզանդիոն, եւ յանդիման եղեալ մեծի թագաւորին` առին զոր յուսայինն եւ զոր ոչն յուսային:
| 57:22 Thus they entered Byzantium, and on being presented to the great emperor they obtained both what they wished and what they had not anticipated:

57:23 Եւ դարձան հանդերձ թղթով այսպիսեաւ:
| 57:23 And they returned with a letter as follows:

57:26 Հրամայեալ մեր տեսանել զթուղթս` վերահասու եղաք գրելոցս առ ի քէն. եւ մեղադրեցաք յոյժ, զի ամենայն սրտիւ միտեցար զհետ հեթանոս թագաւորաց, եւ մեզ եւ ոչ թղթով բաւականացար ծանաւթանալ:
| 57:26 We have ordered your letters to be opened and have been informed of what you wrote. We greatly blamed you for wholeheartedly supporting heathen kings and not even deigning to inform us by letter:
|
57:27 Եւ առաւել յայսմ մեղադիր եմք, զի արհամարհեալ զճարտարաւքս, որ ի մերում քաղաքիս` յԱսորեաց ոմանց խնդրեցեր զիմաստից գիւտս:
| 57:27 And we especially blame you for this, that disdaining the learned men in our city, you have sought scholarly inventions from certain Syrians:
|
57:28 Վասն որոյ հաճեալ էաք ընդ մերոց ծառայիցդ արհամարհել զայդպիսի ուսումն. բայց զի յետոյ պատմեաց մեզ Մեսրոպ, եթէ կատարումն արուեստիդ ի շնորհաց վերնոյն եղեւ` գրեցաք զի ամենայն փութով ուսցին. եւ զքեզ պատուեալ ընկալցին որպէս զարդարեւ վարդապետ իւրեանց, հանգոյն արքեպիսկոպոսին Կեսարու, եւ զարմանք եւ ծախք յարքունուստ եղիցին:
| 57:28 Therefore we were pleased with our subjects for scorning such teaching. But because Mesrop later told us that the completion of this invention was due to divine grace, we have written that they should study it with all diligence and receive you with honor as their true teacher, in like manner as the archbishop of Caesarea, and that allowances and expenses should be provided by the royal treasury:

57:29 Եւ հրամայեցաք քաղաք շինել յաշխարհիդ Հայոց` յապաւինութիւն ձեզ եւ մերոց զաւրացդ:
| 57:29 We have also ordered a city to be built in Armenia to serve as a refuge for yourselves and our armies:

57:30 Եւ վասն քո արարաք ստրատելատ զՎարդան զորդի որդիացելոյ քոյ, եւ յառաջին վարդապետսն գրեցաք ցՄեսրոպ:
| 57:30 And on your account, we have made Vardan, the son of your son- in- law, a general and have inscribed Mesrop among the leading doctors:

57:35 Բազում գոհութիւն Աստուծոյ մատուցանեմք յաղագս քո բարեհամբաւութեանդ ի մէջ այդպիսի բարբարոս ազգի. այլ ազատ ի մեղադրանաց ոչ թողումք, որ ոչ կանխաւ յիշատակեցեր զսիրելութիւն Գրիգորի եւ Ներսիսի երանելեաց քոց հարց:
| 57:35 We offer many thanks to God for your good renown among such a barbarous nation. Yet we do not absolve you from blame that you did not record earlier the love of Gregory and of Nersēs your blessed fathers for us:

57:36 Եւ առաւել ընդ այս զարմանամք, եթէ զիա՞րդ թողեր զաղբիւրն եկեղեցւոյ, զհայրն մեր սուրբ Յովհաննէս, որ ոչ միայն տիեզերական մայրաքաղաքիս, այլ եւ սովաւ ամենայն քրիստոնեայք ընդհանուր աշխարհիս ի նմանէ լուսաւորեցան վարդապետութեամբ. ուստի եւ Ոսկեբերան կոչեցին զնա:
| 57:36 And we are even more amazed as to why you neglected the fountain of the church, our father Saint John, by whom not only this universal metropolis but also all Christians in the entire world were illuminated through his teaching. Hence, they called him Chrysostom:

57:37 Եւ ձեր զանց զնովաւ արարեալ` կամեցայք ի սահանական ջրոց զփափագ ծարաւոյն յագեցուցանել. մինչեւ ամենակալին տեսեալ զսնոտի աշխատութիւնն` բղխեաց ի ձեզ զշնորհս Հոգւոյն, ընդ որ այժմ ուրախ եմք:
| 57:37 Yet you passed him by and wished to quench your thirst at torrential waters, until the Omnipotent saw your vain labors and showered upon you the grace of the Spirit - at which we now rejoice:
|
57:38 Իսկ արդ` հրամանաւ ինքնակալին Աւգոստոսի տուեալ լիցի քեզ իշխանութիւն վարդապետել զկողմնդ մեր. եւ աղանդոյդ բորբորիտոնաց` կամ հաւանեցուցանել, կամ հալածել ի քումմէ վիճակէդ:
| 57:38 So at the command of Emperor Augustus may you be accorded the authority to instruct our sector, and either to convert the sect of the Borborites or to expel them from your see:

57:39 Եւ զառաքեալս ի քէն զՄեսրոպ ձեռնադրեցաք լինել եկղեսիաստիկոս:
| 57:39 And as for this Mesrop whom you sent we have ordained him ecclesiasticos:
