63:1 Յաղագս չար միաբանութեանն Հայոց ի խորհուրդ կորստեան անձանց:
| 63:1 Concerning the wicked alliance of the Armenians to plan their own destruction:

63:2 Բայց թագաւորն Հայոց Արտաշիր անհուն սկսաւ ողողանել յանառակ ցանկութիւնս, մինչեւ տաղտկանալ ի նմանէ ամենայն նախարարացն:
| 63:2 But Artashir, the king of Armenia, began to plunge without restraint into licentious pleasures to the extent that all the princes became disgusted with him:

63:3 Որոց եկեալ առ մեծն Սահակ` զբողոք բարձին, հրաւիրելով եւ զնա յաւգնականութիւն ինքեանց, չարախաւսել առ արքային Պարսից, եւ ի բաց ընկենուլ զթագաւորն իւրեանց, եւ պարսիկ ածել ունող աշխարհիս:
| 63:3 Coming to Sahak the Great they raised a complaint and invited him to help them in denouncing him to the Persian king, in deposing their own king, and in bringing a Persian as lord of this country:

63:4 Այլ նա ասէ. «Ոչ առ սուտս ունիմ զձեզ. իմ իսկ լուեալ է զայդպիսի աղէտս ամաւթալեաց, եւ բազում անգամ յանդիմանեալ` ուրացաւ:
| 63:4 But he said: “ I do not consider you to be liars; I too have heard of this shameful disgrace. Often have I reprimanded him, but he denied it:

63:5 Եւ արդ` պարտ է փոքր մի տանել թերութեան առնն, մինչեւ զելս իրացն խորհել մարթասցուք կայսերբն Յունաց Թէոդոսիւ, եւ ոչ անաւրինաց մատնել ի ծաղր եւ յայպանումն:
| 63:5 So we must endure for a while the man’s faults until we are able to arrange a solution with the Greek emperor Theodosius, and not hand him over to the lawless to be derided and mocked:

63:6 Եւ նոքա ոչ կամէին, այլ ջանային համախորհուրդ իւրեանց զնա առնել:
| 63:6 But they were unwilling and tried to make him accept their plan:
|
63:7 Այլ նա ասէ. «Ինձ քաւ լիցի մատնել գայլոց զիմ մոլորեալ ոչխարս, եւ ոչ պատել զբեկեալն կամ զհիւանդացեալն, այլ գահավէժ առնել:
| 63:7 However, he said: “ Heaven forbid that I hand over to wolves my erring sheep and not bind up the wounded and sick but cause his ruin:

63:8 Զի եթէ էր հաւատացեալ թագաւորի առաջի` փութայի եւ ոչ յապաղէի, յուսալով զկանգնումն գլորելոյն. այլ հեթանոսաց, յառաւել կործանումն` ոչ առնում յանձն, ըստ այնմ` թէ մի՛ մատներ գազանաց զանձն խոստովանող քեզ:
| 63:8 For if it were before a Christian king that we denounced him I would be eager and would not hesitate, hoping to raise up the fallen one; but with pagans it would be for his greater destruction, and I refuse in accordance with the saying: ‘ Do not betray to wild beasts the person who confesses himself to you’:

63:9 Քանզի դրոշմեալ է աւազանաւն, թէպէտ եւ անառակ է. պոռնիկ է, այլ քրիստոնեայ է. գիճացեալ է մարմնով, այլ ոչ անհաւատ հոգւով. զեղխ է վարուք, այլ ոչ կրակապաշտ. տկար է ի կանայս, այլ ոչ ծառայէ տարերց:
| 63:9 For he has been sealed by baptism, even though he is licentious. He is a fornicator, yet he is a Christian. He is dissolute of body, yet not unbelieving of spirit. He is impure of life, but not a fire worshipper. He is weak with women, but he does not serve the elements:

63:10 Եւ զիա՞րդ լինիցի այդ, փոխանակել զիմ ախտացեալ ոչխարն ընդ առողջ գազանին, որոյ առողջութիւնն է մեզ պատուհաս:
| 63:10 And how could it be that I would exchange my sick sheep for a healthy wild beast whose health is our punishment:

63:11 Իսկ նախարարացն զմտաւ ածեալ, իբր թէ խաբկանաւք իցէ գործն` յապաղել զնոսա, զի զթագաւորն պատրաստեցուսցէ` ասեն ամենեքեան. «Վասն զի ոչ համակամեցար մեզ` չթագաւորել նմա, արդ եւ մեք կամեսցուք` եւ քեզ չքահանայանալ մեզ:
| 63:11 But the princes, supposing that he was acting deceitfully to delay them so that he might prepare the king, all said: “ Because you would not agree with us that he should not be king, now we wish that you should not be our priest:

63:12 Եւ միաբանեալ ամենեքին, անցին առ արքայն Պարսից Վռամ, հանդերձ Սուրմակաւ ոմամբ Արծկէացի փառամոլ երիցու, չարախաւսել զարքայէն իւրեանց զԱրտաշրէ, եւ զմեծէն Սահակայ` զՅունաւք գլեալ խորհրդովն:
| 63:12 And they all in unison went to the king of Persia, Vṙam, with a certain Surmak of Artskē, an ambitious priest, to accuse their king Artashir and Sahak the Great of sympathies with the Greeks:
