64:1 Յաղագս բառնալոյ թագաւորութեանն Հայոց ինքեանց կամաւ, եւ անարգելոյ աթոռոյ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն:
| 64:1 Concerning the abrogation of the Armenian kingdom by their own will, and the debasement of the archiepiscopal throne:

64:2 Յայնժամ արքային Պարսից Վռամայ կոչեցեալ ի դուռն զթագաւորն Հայոց զԱրտաշիր եւ զմեծն Սահակ, եւ խնդրէին ի նմանէ ամբաստանել զԱրտաշրէ. եւ նա հրաժարէր բնաւ ասել ինչ չար կամ բարի:
| 64:2 Then the Persian king Vṙam summoned the Armenian king Artashir and Sahak the Great to court. They the princes sought from the latter a denunciation of Artashir, but he absolutely refused to say anything, evil or good:

64:3 Ապա հրամայէ հազարապետին Արեաց, որ էր Սուրենեան Պահլաւ, զի հաւանեցուսցէ զնա խրատու սիրելութեան, որպէս զազգային:
| 64:3 Then he, Vṙam ordered the minister of the Aryans, who was of the Surenean Pahlav, to persuade him by friendly advice as his relative:

64:4 Եւ նորա անկեալ ի բանս հրապուրանաց, ասելով. «Զի արիւն իմ ես եւ հարազատութիւն` զբարին քո խորհելով ասեմ. եթէ միայն այժմ միաբանեսցիս ընդ նախարարսդ` մեծարեալ լինիցիս յարքայէն Պարսից. եւ զթոռն քո զՎարդան կարգեսցէ ի վերայ Հայոց զուգահաւասար թագաւորին եւ համապատիւ:
| 64:4 So he adopted a seductive tone and said: “ Since you are my blood and kin, I speak out of consideration for your own good. If only you now’ agree with your princes you will be honored by the king of Persia, and he will set your grandson Vardan over the Armenians with a rank and dignity equal to that of a king:

64:5 Այլ նա ոչ առնոյր յանձն, ասելով. «Զիա՞րդ վասն սնափառութեան եւ իշխանասիրութեան չարաբանիցեմ զընկերէ. կամ ընդէ՞ր ձեր այդպիսի յաւժարութիւն` ընկենուլ զԱրտաշիր. զի ես զնորա ապստամբութեան ինչ խորհուրդ ոչ գիտեմ. ապա եթէ վասն անառակ ինչ վարուց, զոր նոքա ամբաստանենն` պատուոյ արժանի է ի ձէնջ, ըստ ձերում անմաքրասէր աւրինացդ, թէպէտ ըստ մերումն դատապարտի. բայց սակայն յինէն ոչ ինչ էք լսելոց ամենեւին:
| 64:5 But he did not agree, saying: “ Why for the sake of vain glory and love of power should I speak evil of my companion. Or why are you so eager to depose Artashir? For I have no knowledge of any plans of his for rebellion. But if it is because of his immoral life, of which they accuse him, rather he is worthy of honor from you in accordance with your impure laws, although he is guilty according to ours. But you will hear nothing at all from me:

64:6 Ապա զայրացեալ Վռամայ, ի մեծի հրապարակին արարեալ քննութիւն, եւ ոչ դնելով ունկն Արտաշրի` յաւժարութեամբ լսէր չարախաւսացն, առաւել եւս յոյժ աղտեղութեան բանիցն Սուրմակայ:
| 64:6 Then Vṙam in anger held an enquiry in the great court. Paying no heed to Artashir he eagerly listened to his detractors, and most especially to the base words of Surmak:

64:7 Քանզի զաթոռ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն էր խոստացեալ նմա նախարարացն թշնամանակամացն եւ ոսոխասիրացն. վասն որոյ ինքնասիրութեամբ պատրաստեաց զլեզուն իւր սուսեր սատակիչ:
| 64:7 For the malicious and contentious princes had promised him the archiepiscopal throne, so in self- interest he had rendered his tongue into a murderous sword:

64:8 Մինչեւ հրամայեաց Վռամ առնուլ զթագաւորութիւնն յԱրտաշրէ, եւ անդէն արգելուլ զնա, եւ զամենայն ինչս ազգի նորա ունել յարքունիս. նոյնպէս եւ զմեծն Սահակ, եւ զտունն կաթողիկոսական ունել յարքունիս, եւ տալ փոխանակ նորա յաթոռ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն Հայոց զՍուրմակն զայն:
| 64:8 Finally Vṙam ordered Artashir to be stripped of his crown and imprisoned, and all the possessions of his family to be confiscated to the court; that Sahak the Great should be treated likewise and the domains of the Catholicos be confiscated to the court; and that in his place Surmak should be given the archiepiscopal throne of Armenia:

64:9 Եւ մեծապարգեւ զնախարարսն արձակեաց պարսիկ մարզպանաւ, որում անուն էր Վեհմիհրշապուհ:
| 64:9 Greatly honoring the princes, he sent them off with a Persian Marzban whose name was Veh- Mihr- Shapuh:

64:10 Բայց Սուրմակայ ոչ աւելի տեւեալ քան զմի ամ` ի նոցին իսկ նախարարացն հալածեցաւ յաթոռոյն. որ ապա զիւրոյ գաւառին զԲզնունեաց զեպիսկոպոսութիւնն ի Պարսից արքայէն եգիտ ունել ազգաւ:
| 64:10 But it was not more than a year before Surmak was expelled from the throne by the very same princes.” Then he obtained from the Persian king the bishopric of his own province of Bznunik’ for himself and his family:

64:11 Իսկ նախարարքն մեր խնդրէին ի Վռամայ ա՛յլ աթոռակալ. եւ ետ նոցա զԲրքիշոյ ոմն ասորի:
| 64:11 But our princes sought from Vṙam another occupant for the throne, and he gave them a Syrian, Brkisho:

64:12 Սա եկեալ վատթար ընկերակցաւք, ածեալ ընդ ինքեան եւ կանայս տնկալուչս, անժուժաբար եւ աւելորդաւք եւ յափշտակութեամբ վախճանեցելոցն վիճակաց վարեալ ամս երիս:
| 64:12 The latter arrived with evil companions, bringing also with him women to keep house. For three years he led a dissolute and prodigal life, seizing the revenues of dioceses whose bishops had died:

64:13 Որում ոչ կարացեալ տանել նախարարացն` դարձեալ աղաչեցին զՎռամ փոխել զնա, եւ տալ զայլ ոք ըստ կրաւնից նոցա. եւ կիսոցն ի նոցանէ զմեծն Սահակ խնդրեալ:
| 64:13 Unable to bear him, the princes again begged Vṙam to change him and give them someone else of their own religion. Half of them requested Sahak the Great:
