67:1 Փոխումն յաշխարհէ մեծին Սահակայ եւ Մեսրոպայ երանելւոյ:

67:2 Զքսան եւ զմի ամ թագաւորեալ Պարսից Վռամ երկրորդ` մեռանի, թողլով զտէրութիւնն որդւոյ իւրում Յազկերտի:
| 67:2 Vṙam the Second died after ruling over Persia for twentyone years; he left the empire to his son Yazkert:

67:3 Որոյ մոռացեալ զհաշտութիւնն` իսկ եւ իսկ ընդ թագաւորելն դիմէ ի վերայ զաւրացն Յունաց, որք առ Մծբնին, հրամայելով գնդին Ատրպատականի ի մեր աշխարհս ելանել. որք եկեալ անկարգապէս բանակեցան հուպ առ Բագնացն աւանի:
| 67:3 The latter, forgetting the treaty, as soon as he gained the throne attacked the Greek army at Nisibis and ordered the forces of Azerbaijan to enter our country. They arrived and camped in disorder near the town of altars Bagavan:

67:4 Յայնժամ հասեալ մեծին Սահակայ հիւանդութիւն մահու. եւ առեալ զնա աշակերտացն` տարան ի գիւղն որ կոչի Բլուր. որպէս թէ ի վայր եւ յընտանեգոյն եւ ի զերծ տեղի մատուցեալ ի զաւրացն Պարսից կտտողաց զնոսա:
| 67:4 Then a mortal illness befell Sahak the Great, and his pupils took him to the village called Blur, as a place very familiar to him and which offered safety from the harassing Persian troops:

67:5 Ուր եւ եհաս վախճան, կեցեալ եպիսկոպոսապետութեամբն ամս յիսուն եւ մի, սկսեալ յերրորդ ամէ վերջնոյ Խոսրովայ արքայի Հայոց մինչեւ ցսկիզբն ամին երկրորդի Յազկերտի եղելոյ Պարսից թագաւորի, յելս ամսոյն նաւասարդի, յաւուր իւրոյ ծննդեանն:
| 67:5 There he died after being the archbishop for fifty- one years, beginning with the third year of the last Khosrov, king of Armenia, down to the beginning of the first year of the second Yazkert, king of Persia, at the end of the month of Navasard on his own birthday:

67:6 Որ մահկանացու ծնեալ` անմահ զիւրն յիշատակ եթող. պատուեաց զպատկերն, պատկառեաց ի կոչնականէն, փոխանորդեաց զկեանսն. եւ այսքան կենցաղավարեաց` իբր զի ոչ պակասութեան իրիք մասն ի ծերութենէն եղանիլ, եւ ոչ յախտից առընդունել:
| 67:6 Although he was born a mortal, he left an immortal memory. He honored the image and was fearful of his caller; he changed his life for life; and he led such a life that there was no imperfection found in him from old age nor did he suffer any illness:

67:7 Զորմէ պարտ էր մեզ հրաշափառագունիւ անցանել բանիւ, ըստ արժանի սրբոյ հաւրն դրուատից. այլ զի մի՛ յերկարութիւն ճառիցս լիցի ձանձրութիւն ընթերցողաց` այլում տեղւոյ եւ ժամանակի զայսոսիկ թողցուք, արտաքոյ այսց գրոց, ուր զսկզբանն հրաւիրեցաք առնել թելադրութիւն:
| 67:7 We should speak of him in majestic terms in a eulogy worthy of this holy father. But to prevent the length of our dis- course from causing tedium to the readers, we shall leave this for another place and time outside this book, as for the early period we promised to compose one:

67:8 Բայց զպատուական մարմին նորա բարձեալ սարկաւագապետին նորին Երեմիայի հանդերձ աշակերտակցաւքն եւ տիկնաւն Մամիկոնենից, նորին նուաւ, որում անուն էր Դստրիկ, կին Վարդանայ ստրատելատի` տարեալ հանգուցին յիւրեանց գիւղն յԱշտիշատ, որ է ի գաւառին Տարաւն:
| 67:8 But his archdeacon Jeremiah, with his fellow pupils and the Mamikonean princess, his granddaughter- in- law whose name was Dstrik, the wife of Vardan the general, took Sahak’s venerable body and laid it to rest in their own village of Ashtishat, which is in the province of Tarawn:

67:9 Եւ ցրուեալ աշակերտաց նորա կրաւնաւորաց սպուդէից ի գաւառս իւրաքանչիւր` շինեցին վանորայս, ժողովեալ եղբարս:
| 67:9 His disciples scattered as zealous monks to each one’s province, built monasteries, and gathered brethren:

67:10 Եւ զկին վեց ամսոց անցելոց կատարման սրբոյն Սահակայ, յերեքտասանն մեհեկանի եւ երանելին Մեսրոպ յաշխարհէ փոխեցաւ ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի, գերազանցեալ քան զամենայն, որք զայնու ժամանակաւ էին առաքինիք:
| 67:10 After six months had passed since Saint Sahak’s death, on the thirteenth of Mehekan the blessed Mesrop also departed the world in the city of Vaḷarshapat, having surpassed all those who at that time were virtuous:

67:11 Քանզի ամբարտաւանութիւն եւ մարդահաճութիւն առ ի նորա վարս տեղի գտանել երբէք ոչ կարացին. այլ հեզ եւ լաւակամ եւ բարեխորհուրդ գոլով, եւ երկնայնոցն զարդարեալ սովորութեամբք զինքն բոլորից ցուցանէր:
| 67:11 Pride or flattery were never able to find a place in his way of life; but he was gentle, kind, and benevolent, and he showed everyone that he was adorned with the virtues of the angels:

67:12 Վասն զի գոյր տեսլեամբ հրեշտակական, մտաւք ծննդական, բանիւ պայծառ, գործովք ժուժկալ, մարմնով արտափայլեալ, սարասիւք անճառ, խորհրդակցութեամբ մեծ, հաւատով ուղիղ, յուսով համբերողական, սիրով անկեղծաւոր, ուսուցանելով անձանձրոյթ:
| 67:12 He was angelic in appearance, fertile of mind, glorious of speech, persevering in action, resplendent of body, ineffable in habits, noble of counsel, unswerving in faith, long- suffering in hope, honest in love, tireless in teaching:

67:13 Այլ վասն զի զբոլոր նորա ուղղութիւնս ոչ եմ բաւական ասել` ի հանգիստ նորա նշխարացն դարձուցից զբանս:
| 67:13 But because I am unable to describe all his virtues, I shall turn my account to the burial of his relics:
|
67:14 Որպէս լուայ ի բազմաց եւ ի հաւաստի արանց, եթէ եկաց լոյս շողապէս ընդ աղաւտ նշան խաչի ի վերայ տանն, ուր երանելին զհոգին աւանդեաց. ոչ փոյթ ընդ փոյթ լեալ էանց ծագումն, կամ սակաւուց տեսանելի, այլ ամենայն բազմութեանն, մինչեւ յոլովից մկրտել յանհաւատից:
| 67:14 As I heard from many trustworthy men, there shone a light like a ray in the form of a dim cross over the house where the blessed one gave up the ghost. This was not something that quickly faded or was visible to a few, but it was visible to the whole multitude, so that many of the unbelievers were baptized:

67:15 Յայնժամ լեալ աղմուկ շփոթի յամբոխութեանն, բաժանեալ յերիս գունդս, վասն հանգուցանելոյ զպարկեշտն զայն մարմին եւ նախ քան զմահն կրթեալ ի մեռելութիւն:
| 67:15 Then there arose a tumult in the crowd that divided into three groups over the burial of that venerable body, which had prepared for death even before dying:

67:16 Կէսքն ասէին տանել ի բնագաւառն իւր ի Տարաւն, եւ ոմանք ի նախ աշակերտեալն Գողթն, եւ այլքն անդէն ի նմին ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի ի սրբոցն դիրս:
| 67:16 Some said it should be taken to his own native province of Tarawn; others to the province first instructed by him, Goḷt’n; and others that it should be buried in that same city of Vaḷarshapat in the resting places of the martyrs:

67:17 Բայց յաղթեաց քաջն Վահան Ամատունի, զի էր զաւրաւոր հաւատովք եւ ճոխութեամբ մարմնաւորաւ. վասն զի ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ ի նա էր հաւատացեալ Պարսից զհազարապետութիւն աշխարհիս Հայոց. որոյ բարձեալ` տարաւ զնա արժանի յուղարկմամբ յիւր գիւղն Օշական:
| 67:17 But the valiant Vahan Amatuni won the argument, for he was powerful both in faith and in secular authority, because at that time the Persians had entrusted him with the governorship of Armenia. He took Mesrop’s body with a worthy escort to his own village of Awshakan:

67:18 Եւ նոյն տեսիլ լուսեղէն խաչին ի վերայ դագաղացն երթայր յանդիման ամենայն ժողովրդեանն, մինչեւ ի հանգիստ զնա փոխեցին Վահան եւ Թաթիկ նորին արբանեակ. եւ ապա նշանն աներեւոյթ լինէր:
| 67:18 And the same vision of the luminous cross moved over the bier in front of the entire crowd, until Vahan and Tatik his servant had laid him to rest; then the sign disappeared:

67:19 Իսկ զաթոռ եպիսկոպոսապետութեանն ետեղապահութեամբ յաջորդեաց հրամանաւ երանելւոյն Մեսրոպայ` նորին աշակերտն Յովսէփ քահանայ ի Վայոց ձորոյ, ի Խողոցիմ գեղջէ:
| 67:19 At the command of blessed Mesrop, his own disciple Joseph, a priest from Vayots’ dzor, from the village of Khoḷots’im, succeeded as a locum- tenens to the archiepiscopal throne:
