5:0 Վասն թագաւորին Ջափրայ, զոր ինչ խորհեցաւ ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց, եւ ի գլուխ եհան զկամս չարութեանն, եւ որ ինչ ընդ սովաւ նախ քան զլնուլ վեցերորդ յոբելինի, եւ եօթանասուներորդ ոլոմպիադին, յետ ինն եւ տասն ընդիքտիոնին, յորում բովանդակին ժամանակք բռնակալութեանն Տաճկաց ամք [ՄԻԲ] ըստ թուոյ հայերէն տումարի. թագաւորէ Տաճկաց Թոքլ ոմն Ջափր անուն:
| 5:0 Concerning the caliph Jap’r, what he planned against Armenia, [how] he effected his evil desires; what [happened] in his time before the completion of the sixth jubilee and the seventieth olympiad, after the nineteenth indiction, when [222] years of the tyranny of the Muslims were completed, according to the reckoning of the Armenian calendar; a certain T’ok’l called Jap’r reigned over the Muslims:

5:1 Այր ոմն Ջափր խրոխտ եւ ամբարհաւաճ. եւ սկսաւ եղջիւր ածել անօրէնութեամբ եւ գոռալով ոգորէր ընդ չորս կողմանս երկրին եւ նեղեալ տագնապէր զխաղաղասէրս կենօք, քանզի կարի սիրելի էր նմա խռովութիւն եւ արիւնհեղութիւն. եւ հանապազ յանձն իւր տարակուսանօք տարուբերէր, թէ յո՞վ եւ կամ յո՞յր կողմանս թափիցէ զդառնութիւն մահաբեր թունից իւրոց, եւ կամ ո՞ւր վատնիցէ ցանիցէ թափիցէ զբազմութիւն նետից ի կապարճից խորհրդանոցին, չարին հնարիմացութեան:
| 5:1 A certain man, Jap’r, insolent and arrogant, began to lift his horns in impiety, to roar and butt at the four corners of the earth, to oppress and torment those who wished a peaceful life; for confusion and the shedding of blood were very dear to him. He was in continuous irresolution and agitation: on whom or on which regions to pour out the bitterness of his mortal poison, or where to loose and shoot out the multitude of arrows in the quiver of his evil and crafty mind:

5:2 Եւ առ յոյժ յիմարութեանն հարեալ ցանկութեամբ, խլրդենի դիմօք, իբրեւ զգազան մի կատաղեալ՝ սկսաւ յարձակել ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց. եւ ըստ հնարագէտ ազգի իւրեանց խորամանկ կեղծաւորութեամբ, խաղաղասէր դիմօք առ սակաւ սակաւ ջանայր կատարել զկամս չարութեան իւրոյ:
| 5:2 In his great folly, smitten by passion and with cancerous mien, raging like a wild beast, he began to attack Armenia. And in accordance with the subtle treachery of their wily race, with an amiable countenance he tried to carry out his evil desires gradually:

5:3 Ի սորա ժամանակս տիրէր Վասպուրական աշխարհիս Աշոտ ի տանէն Արծրունեաց, այր քաջայայտ եւ ճոխ ի բարձրագոյնս. յոյր ձեռն բազում արութիւն նահատակութեան երեւեալ լինէին ի մարտս պատերազմաց եւ ի հանդէսս ճակատեցելոց ի միայնամարտիկ զինուորութեան:
| 5:3 In his time the ruler of the land of Vaspurakan was Ashot of the Artsruni house, a most renowned man and very highly distinguished. Through him many notable deeds of valour were performed in battles and in single combat in view of drawn- up ranks:

5:4 Եւ խոյակապ եւ անուանի եղեալ քան որ յառաջագոյն քան զնա էին կացեալ իշխանք ընդհանուր Հայաստանեայցս, որ յարեւելս եւ ի կողմանս հիւսիսոյ, մանաւանդ որ ի Վասպուրական աշխարհիս էին կացեալ նախարարք յիշխանական պետութիւնս:
| 5:4 He was more glorious and famous than those before him who had been princes of all Armenia, those in the East and the North, and especially those in the land of Vaspurakan who had been princes in positions of authority:

5:5 Ընդ նոյն ժամանակս յղէ թագաւորն զոմն ի յաւագ նախարարացն վերակացու Հայոց եւ հաւատարիմ ի վերայ հարկաց արքունի Ապուսէթ անուամբ, ըստ տաճկական լեզուին, յարելութեամբ եբրայական դպրութեանն:
| 5:5 At that same time the caliph sent one of his senior nobles as overseer of Armenia with responsibility for the royal taxes; he was called Apusēt in the Tachik language and was also familiar with Hebrew literature:

5:6 Եւ յելանելն նորա եւ մօտ լինել ի սահմանս Հայոց զօրօք բազմօք, մերձ ի սահմանս Տարունոյ Առաջին կոչեցեալ Հայոց՝ իշխան Տարունոյ Բագարատ, վասն զի ունէր յայնժամ զգլխաւորութիւն բարձակցութիւն իշխանաց Հայոց, որ էր ի տոհմէն Բագրատունեաց՝ առաքէ զոմանս ի մեծամեծաց իւրոց ընդ առաջ նորա պատարագօք ոսկոյ եւ արծաթոյ եւ պատուական հանդերձից, համոզեալ մի ելանել յերկիրս Հայոց:
| 5:6 He set out and approached the borders of Armenia with a numerous army, coming close to the borders of Tarōn, called First Armenia. Then Bagarat, prince of Tarōn, who was of the Bagratuni family, since he then held the highest rank of the Armenian princes, sent some of his magnates to meet him with presents of gold, silver, and honourable garments, urging that he not enter Armenia:

5:7 Բայց նոքա ի մտի եդեալ էին, թերեւս պատիր խաբեութեամբ կարասցեն բառնալ զնոսա յիւրաքանչիւր տէրութենէ:
| 5:7 But they [the Muslims] had decided that perchance by some deceitful trickery they might be able to dispossess them of each of their principalities:

5:8 Իսկ իբրեւ ծանուցաւ նմա անլոյծ միաբանութիւն ուխտի ընդ միմեանս Աշոտոյ եւ Բագարատայ՝ ոչ ինչ յայտնեաց զխորհուրդս չարութեանն, զոր խորհեալ էին ի վերայ նոցա. բայց միայն զհարկաց եւ զայլ հոգաբարձութենէ ծանուցանէ զպատճառ գալստեանն. եւ նոքա տան տանել նմա զհարկս եւ հասս արքունի եւ դարձուցանեն զնա ընդ նոյն ուստի եկն:
| 5:8 However, when he [Apusēt] realised the indissoluble unity of the mutual pact between Ashot and Bagarat, he in no way revealed the wicked plans that they were plotting against them [the Armenans], but merely indicated that the reason for his coming concerned taxes and other administrative matters. So, they had the royal taxes and dues given to him and sent him back whence he had come:

5:9 Նորա դարձեալ դառնայ ի Սամառայ եւ ծանուցանէ արքայի զոր ինչ գործեաց, եւ թէ զիա՛րդ են առ միմեանս միաբանութեամբ իշխանք Հայոց։ Եւ զչարեալ ընդ խափանումն խորհրդոցն իւրոց՝ ամբաստան յոյժ լինէր զԱշոտոյ հանդերձ թղթովք Տաճկաց, որք էին ի կողմանս Հայոց, բազում այն ինչ զոր ստութեամբ քան թէ ճշմարտութեամբ զեկուցանեն զնմանէ զգործս, եւ թէ հակառակս եւս թագաւորութեան քոյ բանընդդէմ լինի հանապազ:
| 5:9 He returned to Samarra and informed the caliph what he had done and how the Armenian princes were in mutual solidarity. Angered at the frustration of his plans, he [Apusēt’] greatly calumniated Ashot with letters of Muslims within Armenia. They informed about his deeds with more falsehood than truth, to the effect that: “ He is continuously saying things opposed to Your Majesty:

5:10 Զնոյն եւ կողմնակալքն Պարսից գրգռէին զթագաւորն ամբաստան լեալ՝ ամբաստան լինել Աշոտի զպետութենէն Տաճկաց:
| 5:10 Likewise, the governors of Persia alarmed the king with charges that Ashot had insulted the rule of the Muslims:

5:11 Բայց ի գնալ մեծ հազարապետին յարքունիս՝ հաւատաց զվերակացութիւնն աշխարհիս Հայոց եւ հարկս արքունի ի ձեռս Մուսէի ումեմն որդւոյ Զօրահայի հագարացւոյ, որ տիրէր յայնժամ Արզնայ եւ ներքոյ կողմանն Աղձնեաց մերձ ի սահմանս Տարունոյ:
| 5:11 Now while the great vizier was returning to court, he entrusted the oversight of Armenia and the royal taxes to a certain Muse, son of a Hagarite Zōrahay, who then ruled Arzn and the lower part of Ałdznik’, near the borders of Tarōn:
