13:1 Յաւէտ խրախճանութեամբ բուռն հարկանել ախորժելի է ինձ զպատմութենէ քաջատոհմիկ եւ բարեփառ բարեյաղթ նահատակէն, զԳուրգինայ ասեմ, զյոյժ փառացի եւ ճոխ եւ նազելի զնախագահ նստեալ զարմէ, յերկուց թագաւորազանց զաճմանն սեռի բերելով զբողբոջս զՍենեքերիմայն եւ զՄամգունեաց ճենազնւոյ:
| 13:1 With especial pleasure I am happy to undertake the story of the noble, glorious, and victorious champion, I mean Gurgēn, member of a family that is most splendid, distinguished, grand, eminent, and prestigious. He descended from two royal lines, being a scion of Senek’erim and of the Mamikoneans from Chen:

13:2 ի միասին զզուգամասն պայազատեալ գահընկալ թագաւորական զարմ, ի հօրէ զՍենեքերիմայն եւ ի մօրէ զՄանգոնեացն, ըստ ծննդաբանութեան գալ հասանել՝ մինչ յորում եմքս հասեալ ժամանակ, յաճախագոյնս վասն Գուրգինայ վայելէ զդրուատեացն, կարեւոր է բազմաձեռն աճմամբ զդրուատեացն յերկարագոյնս հատուցանել զճարտասանութիւնս. բայց քանզի պատմագրութեան է ժամս եւ ոչ գովասանականութեան՝ արտաքոյ եղէց յոլովից բանբասանաց. մանաւանդ զի ոչ բաւականանամ իմով աղքատիմաստ բանգիտութեամբ զսորայս բացայայտել զչափ ներբողականին՝ այլոց ուժեղագունից եւ մտահարուստ արանց թողի, եւ զերծի զիս ի պարսաւանաց բարձրագունից:
| 13:2 From both sides he inherited royal blood and station: from his father that of Senek’erim, and from his mother that of the Mamikoneans, from whom he traced his genealogy down to the time we are considering. Gurgēn deserves the most expansive praises; I should richly eulogise him and deploy my rhetoric to the fullest extent. But since this is the occasion to write history and not engage in panegyrics, I shall avoid all reproach, especially since with my meagre erudition I am inadequate to expound the full measure of his praise. That I leave to other more competent and intelligent men, freeing myself from overwhelming censure:

| 13:3 But I myself have no hesitation, reserve, or objection in considering him the equal of the martyrs and in praising as sacrificial his relentless struggles against the Arab raiders. He expended torrents of blood for his native land, and soul and body for the saints of Christ’s church and the believers in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in order to preserve them safe and unsullied. As a good shepherd gives himself to death for his sheep, he modelled himself on the Son of God, as it pleased Paul to say: “ Those whom he previously knew he previously summoned to share the image of his Son:

13:5 Եւ այս բաւականասցի տրամամիտ մտառուացն, եւ մեք զպատմողականն համառօտաբար յառաջ վարեսցուք հարկաւորութիւն:
| 13:5 Let this suffice for those who are logically minded and understanding. We shall carry forward in abbreviated fashion our historical task:

13:6 Բայց մի ինձ մեղադիր լինիր, ո՜վ ուսումնասէր դու, սակս ոչ զբովանդակ սորա գործս շարել ի ճառս մանրապատումս:
| 13:6 But do not blame me, Oh lover of learning, for not including in this history all his deeds in detail:

13:7 Վասն զի այլոց գործք մի կամ երկու կամ այլս եւս գործք գործեալ է. իսկ սորայս՝ գերազանցեալ յաճախեաց քան զբազմացն իրողութիւնս. վասն այնր առ այժմ համառօտեալ ի նշանագիրս սուղոյբայից, որպէս Պօղոսի հաճոյ թուի գրել յառ Եբրայեցիս թղթին, թէ «չէ բաւական ժամանակս պատմելոյ» վասն դատաւորացն Իսրայէլի եւ սրբոց մարգարէիցն, միայն յայս բան բովանդակեալ ասէ, «որք հաւատով պարտեցին զթագաւորութիւնն:
| 13:7 For the deeds accomplished by others are one or two or so, whereas his surpass in number the activity of many men. Therefore, for the moment we have abbreviated them into few words, as Paul was pleased to write in the Epistle to the Hebrews: “ Time does not suffice for describing the judges of Israel and the holy prophets”; in this account he includes only “ those who by faith defeated the kingdom:

13:8 Որգունակ եւ յաղագս փրկչական տնտեսութեանն գրէ Յոհաննէս ի կատարածի աւետարանական շարագրածին:
| 13:8 In similar fashion John writes about the saving dispensation at the end of his gospel:

13:9 Գուրգէն որդի Ապուպելճի Վասպուրական իշխանի, ի շփոթի ժամանակին Բուխայի եւ ի հայրապետութեանն Յովհաննու Հայոց կաթողիկոսի, իմաստութեամբ գործեալ՝ ոչ եկաց հակառակ չարին. այլ իբրեւ եմուտ Բուխայ յաշխարհս Վասպուրական՝ ել գնաց Գուրգէն առ Քուրդիկ Մամիկոնէից տէր ի Բագրեւանդ գաւառ, եւ անդ լինէր, զի էր Քուրդիկ քեռի Գուրգինայ:
| 13:9 Gurgēn, son of Apupelch, prince of Vaspurakan, in the troubled time of Bugha and when the patriarch Yovhannēs was Catholicos of Armenia, acted wisely in not opposing the evil one. But when Bugha entered the land of Vaspurakan, Gurgēn went to K’urdik, lord of the Mamikonean, in the province of Bagrevand and stayed there, for K’urdik was Gurgēn’s uncle:

13:10 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ կատարեաց Բուխայ զանցս անցից ընդ Վասպուրական աշխարհս եւ խաղաց յարեւելս կոյս՝ ել գնաց Գուրգէն ի Սպեր գաւառ. եւ էր յայնժամ առեալ Յունաց գաղտաբար Իշխանիկ կոչեցեալ ի տոհմէ բագրատունի՝ զբերդն Արամանեակ կոչեցեալ. եւ ընկալեալ ի նմանէ մեծաշուք պատուով:
| 13:10 When Bugha had completed his passage through the land of Vaspurakan and had marched to the East, Gurgēn went to the province of Sper. At that time the prince called [Grigor] of the Bagratuni clan had surreptitiously seized [from] the Greeks the castle called Aramaneak; [Gurgēn] was received by him with splendid honour:

13:11 Եւ արեւելեաց զօրավարին եկեալ պատերազմել ընդ Իշխանկանն առնուլ զամրոցն, եւ անդ Գուրգէն բազում արութիւն ցուցեալ ընդդէմ յունական զօրացն, ոչ միանգամ այլ բազում անգամ, եւ [Խ] արամբք ի դիմի հարեալ հազարի միոյ՝ սպան զբազումս ի նոցանէ զընտրելոցն Յունաց, եւ մերկ կապուտ կողոպուտ առնէր զնոսա, մինչեւ զարմանալ զօրավարին ընդ սորայս քաջութիւն՝ գրէ առ Միքայէլ թագաւորն Յունաց զեկուցանելով վասն նորա:
| 13:11 The general of the East came to wage war with the prince in order to recover the fortress, and there Gurgen demonstrated much valour in opposing the Greek army— not once but many times. With forty men he attacked a thousand, killed many of the elite Greeks, and completely despoiled them, so that in his astonishment at his valour the general wrote to the Greek emperor Michael informing him about him:

13:12 Իսկ թագաւորն գրէ առ զօրավարն թերեւս կարասցէ հաւանեցուցանել զԳուրգէն՝ երթալ ի թագաւորական քաղաքն առ կայսր, եւ մեծաց պարգեւաց եւ պատուի եւ գահու յառաջաձգութեամբ ընկալցի պարգեւ ի թագաւորէն:
| 13:12 Then the emperor wrote to his general in the hope that he would be able to persuade Gurgēn to come to the capital to the emperor, from whom he would receive gifts and honour and promotion in rank:

13:13 Ընդ որ ոչ հաճոյացեալ Գուրգէնայ երթալ ի Յոյնս. բայց հաւանեցուցեալ զԳրիգորն տալ զբերդն ցզօրավարն, եւ հաճեսցի զմիտս թագաւորին:
| 13:13 Gurgēn did not consent to go to the Greeks, but he did persuade Grigor to give the castle to the general and appease the emperor:

13:14 Եւ զօրք Տաճկաց ի զօրացն Բուխայի եկեալ էին ընդ զօրս Յունաց պատերազմել ընդ ամուրսն. եւ Գուրգէն ելեալ ընդդէմ նոցա բազում անգամ՝ ոչ սակաւ օճիրս գործէր ընդ զօրս Տաճկաց:
| 13:14 Some Muslim soldiers from Bugha’s army had come to attack the Greek forces in the castles. Gurgēn opposed them numerous times, inflicting no small losses on the Muslim army:

13:15 Եւ ինքն անցեալ գնայր առ Իշխանիկն ի յամուրն Աշխարհաբերդն կոչեցեալ. եւ անտի արիաբար քաջասրտագոյն դիմացուածով ելեալ գնաց դարձեալ առ սպարապետն Սմբատ:
| 13:15 Then he himself went to the prince in the fortress called Ashkharhaberd; after there exhibiting most courageous resistance, he returned to the sparapet Smbat:

13:16 Եւ նորա զեկուցեալ վասն նորա Բուխայի՝ ասէ. «այրս այս Գուրգէն ի տոհմէն Արծրունեաց, այր քաջ եւ պատերազմող, ի յահէ քումմէ անցեալ գնացեալ զկողմամբքն Յունաց, եւ յարձակեալ բազում անգամ ի վերայ յունական զօրուն որք ընդդէմ զօրաց քոց պատերազմէին՝ եւ անդ ոչ սակաւ հեղմունս արեանց արարեալ փոխանակ զօրաց քոց ի զօրացն Յունաց. արդ աւասիկ հասեալ կայ եւ մնայ քո հրամանի. արդ հաճոյ թուիցի քեզ, քաջ զօրավար, զսորայս գործեցեալ քաջութիւն ի վերայ զօրացն Յունաց:
| 13:16 The latter informed Bugha about him, saying: “ This man Gurgēn from the clan of the Artsrunik’, a valiant warrior, from fear of you crossed over to the territory of the Greeks. Yet he frequently attacked the Greek forces that were waging war with your army, and caused no little shedding of blood to the Greek troops vicariously for your army. Now behold, he has arrived and awaits your orders. May you be pleased, valiant general, with his brave deeds against the Greek army:

13:17 Եւ Բուխայ հրամայեաց սպարապետին, զի աներկիւղ կացցէ մնասցէ Գուրգէն առ սպարապետին մեծաւ շնորհակալիւք:
| 13:17 And Bugha sent word to the sparapet that Gurgēn should remain with the sparapet without fear and [accept] his profound thanks:

13:18 Ի սոյն աւուրս որք մնացեալ էին ի տանէն Արծրունեաց իբրեւ լուան զպարտումն զօրացն արքունի ի Ծանարացն՝ ի մի վայր եկեալ գունդ կազմեալ հետեւազօրքն մարտակցօք հանդերձ խառնաղանջ ամբոխիւ՝ լինին թուեալ արք [Տ], եւ առաջնորդ կացուցանէին իւրեանց զԱպուջափր Արծրունի, եւ ընդ նմա Սահակ Ապումկդէմ քեռորդի Ապուջափրի, այր քաջ եւ պատերազմող:
| 13:18 In those same days, when the survivors of the Artsruni house heard of the defeat of the royal army by the Tsanars, they gathered their forces in one spot with the foot soldiers and mass of common people, being four thousand in number. As their leader they appointed Apujap’r Artsruni, and with him Sahak Apumk’dēm, Apujap’r uncle, a brave warrior:

13:19 Եւ ասպատակեալ ի Ճուաշ եւ ի Թոռնաւան գաւառ՝ յաւարի առնուն: Եւ քանզի հաւատացեալ էր զգաւառսն Բուխայի ի ձեռն սպարապետին Սմբատայ՝ գրէ առ ամիրայն Նախճաւանու Աբրահամ անուն, զեկուցանելով նմա զզօրացն Վասպուրականի. նորա փութանակի հասեալ ի քաղաքն Բերկրի, եւ միաբանութեամբ քաղաքացուացն ելեալ պատահեն զօրացն ի զօրագլխացն Վասպուրականի ի գեօղն որում Խոզաղբերքն ասեն:
| 13:19 Raiding the provinces of Chuash and T’oṙnawan, they took plunder. But because Bugha had entrusted these provinces to the sparapet Smbat, he wrote to the emir of Nakhchavan whose name was Abraham, informing him about the troops of Vaspurakan. He [Abraham] rapidly marched to the city of Berkri, and in unison with the citizens went out to meet the army and commanders of Vaspurakan at a village called Khozałberk’:

13:20 զի եւ այլազգիքն տեղի ետուն եւ փախեան յերեսաց Ապումկդէմայ. եւ եհար սատակեաց Ապումկդէմ ի միում ասպատակի [Ը] այր, եւ զերիվարս նոցա եւ զէնս եւ զզարդ մերկեաց ի նոցանէ, եհար զայլազգիսն ի հարուածս մեծամեծս եւ ինքն դարձեալ ասպատակեաց զկնի նոցա:
| 13:20 For the Muslims had retreated and fled before Apumk’dēm. In a single raid Apumk’dēm had slain eight men and stripped them of their horses, arms, and accoutrements. He had inflicted great losses on the Muslims and had again made incursions in pursuit of them:

13:21 Եւ մինչ երթայր եւ խորհէր՝ խոցեալ նորա երիվարն, եւ յանկարծակի այն ինչ ոտն երիվարին շաղեալ ընդ փոքր թուփ մի, որպէս ասեն, եւ զուլումբեալ ի վերայ գլխոյն, ջարդեալ զողն ու լարն՝ ի բաց ընկէց զհեծեալն զքաջ զօրավարն Ապումկդէմ:
| 13:21 While he was riding along deep in thought, his wounded horse caught its foot in a small bush, as they say, and fell headlong, breaking its back and throwing its rider, the valiant general Apumk’dēm:

13:22 Եւ հասեալ ի վերայ նորա թշնամիքն՝ հարին սրով:
| 13:22 His enemies fell upon him, striking him with their swords:
|
13:23 Եւ մի ոմն մերկանայր զկօշիկս ոտիցն նորա. եւ հարեալ աքացի զվատ այրն հանդէպ սրտին՝ եւ սպան զնա:
| 13:23 One of them stripped off his shoes, but he kicked the coward in the chest and killed him:
|
13:24 Յայնժամ դիմեցին ի վերայ նորա եւ ի բաց առին զգլուխ նորա եւ տարան ետուն առ զօրավարն իւրեանց Աբրահամ. եւ քաջալերեցան դարձեալ ի վերայ գնդին Հայոց, եւ հարեալ ի հարուածս մեծամեծս:
| 13:24 Then they rushed on him, cut off his head, and brought it to their general Abraham. Taking courage, they turned on the Armenian force, inflicting grave losses:

13:25 Բայց տէր Ապուջափր եւ որ ընդ նմա՝ քաջապէս մարտեան ընդ այլազգիսն եւ առին:
| 13:25 But Lord Apujap’r and those with him fought bravely against the Muslims and carried the day:
|
13:26 Իսկ իբրեւ գիտացին եթէ սպանաւ զօրավարն, եւ խորտակեցաւ բազուկ աջոյ ձեռին, եղեալ ի փախուստ դարձան, եւ քակեցին զռազմն եւ աւերեցին զճակատն եւ լքին զմիմեանս, եւ թողին զպատերազմն եւ գնացին փախստական ամենայն այր յո՛վ եւ կարաց զերծանել. մնաց միայն զօրքն հետեւակազօրքն լքեալ առանց առաջնորդի:
| 13:26 When they [the Armenians] realised that their general had been killed and that their right arm had been crushed, they turned in flight. Breaking ranks and destroying their line, they separated and abandoned the battle, every man fleeing where he could escape. There remained only the infantry, discouraged without a leader:

13:27 Յորոց վերայ սուր եդեալ կոտորեցին, եւ լցին դիակամբք սպանելոցն զդաշտաձեւ հովիտն:
| 13:27 The enemy fell on these and slaughtered them, filling the wide valley with the corpses of the slain:
|
13:28 Եւ աղբերքն որ ի տեղւոջն եւ այլ ջրոցն քամուածքն ի ծործորացն ի վայր՝ յարիւն դարձան:
| 13:28 The springs there and the other muddy rivulets of water in the valleys below turned to blood:
|
13:29 Եւ ինքն Աբրահիմ եկն անց յայնկոյս յոստանն Ռշտունեաց եւ անդ լինէր: Եւ դարձաւ ի տեղի իւր ի Նախճաւան: Իսկ Ապուջափր անցեալ ի կողմն Աղբագոյ՝ եւ ժողովեցան առ նա գունդք գունդ յամենայն կողմանց: Եւ դարձան մտին յոստանն Ռշտունեաց եւ կացուցին յանձանց իւրեանց իշխան զՎասակ Կովակեր, եղբայր Վահանայ:
| 13:29 Abraham crossed over to the capital of Ṙshtunik’ and stayed there; [later] he returned to his own residence in Nakhchavan. Apujap’r went to the region of Ałbag.
Troops gathered around him from every quarter; then they entered the capital of Ṙshtunik’ and appointed as their prince Vasak Kovaker, brother of Vahan:

13:30 Լուր եղեւ այս առ քաջն Գուրգէն պարտումն Վասպուրականի ի Տաճկաց եւ իշխանանալն Վասակայ: Ելեալ փութանակի եկն եհաս յաշխարհս Վասպուրական սպարապետին կամակցութեամբ:
| 13:30 When news of the defeat of [the troops of] Vaspurakan by the Muslims and of Vasak’s becoming prince reached the valiant Gurgēn, he rapidly marched to the land of Vaspurakan with the approval of the sparapet:

13:31 Եւ այն ինչ ընդ մտանելն՝ երագապէս հասեալ ի վերայ ամրոցացն Ջղմար եւ Սրինգ կոչեցեալ՝ յինքն գրաւէ զամրոցն, եւ կալեալ զՎասակ՝ յինքն գրաւեաց զզօրավարութիւնն բոլոր Վասպուրական տէրութեանս:
| 13:31 As soon as he reached there, he quickly attacked the fortresses called Jłmar and Sring, seized them, and captured Vasak, appropriating for himself the command of the entire principality of Vaspurakan:

13:32 Եւ սկսաւ շրջել կարգաւ ընդ բոլոր աշխարհս, յորում բնակեալ էին Տաճիկք, որ մնային ի սմա ըստ հրամանին Բուխայի:
| 13:32 He began to make an orderly tour of the whole land, in which dwelt the Muslims who had remained there at Bugha’s orders:

13:33 Եւ առնէր հարուածս մեծամեծս այլազգեացն. եւ սատակէր զնոսա սրով եւ աղեղամբ, եւ եբարձ զամենայն ազգս Տաճկաց, որ բնակեալ էին ի Վասպուրական տէրութեանն:
| 13:33 He inflicted great losses on the Muslims, slaughtering them with the sword and bow, and removed all the tribes of Muslims who were living in the principality of Vaspurakan:

13:34 Յայն ժամանակս գայ ոմն Բուտել անուն ի զօրացն արքունի հրամանաւ Բուխայի, հասանել ի վերայ Գուրգինի, եւ ընդ նմա քաղաքացիքն Բերկրոյ որ Ութմանիկքն կոչին, եւ յազատացն Վասպուրականի որ միաբանեալ էին ընդ զօրսն արքունի, արք իբրեւ [Ս], եւ հանդիպեցան միմեանց յՈրդոք գեօղ, ի գլուխս ձորոյն Հայոց, որ հանէ յԱրուանթունի գաւառն:
| 13:34 At that time a certain Butel from the royal army came at Bugha’s command to attack Gurgēn. With him were the citizens of Berkri called Ut’manik and those of the nobility of Vaspurakan who had joined the royal army, about two thousand men. They encountered each other at the village of Ordok’ at the head of Hayots’- dzor which leads into the province of Aruant’uni:

13:35 Եւ Գուրգէն յանհոգս անկասկած բնակէր անդ [Ն] արամբք: Եւ այն ինչ ընդ առաւօտն յեղակարծում հասին ի վերայ զօրք Տաճկաց, եւ աճապարեալ Գուրգէն հեծեալ յերիվարն. եւ կարգեցին ճակատս եւ ռազմ բոլորեցին, եւ վահանաւորքն փակեցին զառաջակողմն ճակատուն եւ կացին ի թիկանց հետեւակազօր նահատակացն. եւ արիաբար հանդիսացեալ գնդին Հայոց՝ ճակատեցան ընդ այլազգիսն հարուստ եւ ձիգ ժամս եւ հարին ի հարուածս մեծամեծս զբանակ այլազգեացն:
| 13:35 Gurgēn was encamped there with four hundred men, unworried and unsuspecting. Suddenly at dawn the force of Muslims attacked. Gurgēn hastily mounted his horse. They formed line and filled out the ranks; the shield bearers covered the front of the battle line, posted in support of the warriors of the infantry. Valiantly distinguishing themselves, the Armenian troops battled the Muslims for many drawn- out hours, inflicting great losses on their army:

13:36 Եւ ապա փոքր մի կազդուրեալ գնդին Տաճկաց՝ կացին յոտն: Յայնժամ տէր Գուրգէն առ չժուժել սրտին, մտրակեալ զքաջ երիվարն յորում նստեալն էր՝ եւ եհար զգունդն զձախակողմն Տաճկաց եւ պատառեաց զռազմն եւ դարձոյց զերեսս նոցա. եւ փախեան այլազգիքն յերեսաց Գուրգէնի մի կողմն:
| 13:36 But the Muslim force recovered a little and stood firm. Then Lord Gurgēn, in his impatience, spurred the brave horse on which he was mounted and attacked the left wing of the Muslim army. Breaking their ranks he turned them back, and one wing of the Muslims fled before Gurgēn:

13:37 Եւ երթայր զհետ եւ սատակէր զնոսա անչափ զօրութեամբ. եւ բազումք այն էին որ մեռանն ի սրոյն Գուրգինի քան որ մնացինն. եւ զօրքն զհետ մտեալ մնացելոցն հանին յերկրէն իւրեանց:
| 13:37 He pursued them and slaughtered them with such vigour that there were more who perished by Gurgēn’s sword than who survived. The troops pursuing the survivors expelled them from their land:

13:38 Իսկ աջ թեւն Տաճկաց շարժեցին զզօրութիւնն Հայոց, եւ փախստեայ գնացին զհետ մինչ ի սահմանս իւրեանց. եւ ինքեանք դարձան անդրէն. կարծէին ի սպառ հարկանել զգունդն Հայոց. բայց պարտեալ եղեւ գունդքն Տաճկաց ի քաջէն Գուրգինայ եւ բեկաւ զօրութիւն նոցա:
| 13:38 But the right wing of the Muslims pushed back the force of Armenians, pursued them in flight as far as their borders, and then returned thinking they had completely destroyed the Armenian army. But it was the Muslim troops who were defeated by the valiant Gurgēn, and their power that was broken:

13:39 Եւ ոչ եւս այնուհետեւ համարձակ ելանէին եւ մտանէին յաշխարհս Վասպուրական զօրքն Տաճկաց. զի անկաւ ահ սաստիկ ի վերայ նոցա:
| 13:39 From then on the Muslim army no longer dared to enter the land of Vaspurakan, for great fear had fallen upon them:

13:40 Իսկ ի վերայ բազում հինիցն եկելոց ի վերայ Գուրգինի եւ սաստիկ պատերազմացն զոր պատերազմեցաւ յաղթող նահատակութեամբ, ոչ միայն յարտաքին թշնամեացն որ շուրջանակի պաշարէին, բազում այն էր որ ի ներքին ընտանեաց հարազատաց, ազգականաց դրժողաց, ուխտազանցաց, ստոց եւ ստերդմանց յուզէին աղմուկք:
| 13:40 Now in addition to the many brigands who attacked Gurgēn, and the hard battles that he fought with victorious heroism, not only [were there] enemies from the outside who surrounded him, there were also many troubles stirred up on the inside by numerous members of his own family, faithless relatives false to their pacts and oaths:

13:41 Իսկ նոցա անմեկնելի զյոյսս իւրեանց ի Քրիստոս ունելով, բնաւից գերագոյն եւ հոյակապ անուն ստացեալ, զյաղթութեան նշանակ կանգնեալ. եւ Տէր ամենակալ էր ընդ նմա ամենայն ուրեք ուր եւ ախորժէր:
| 13:41 But they [Gurgēn and his party], keeping their hope in Christ unbroken, acquired a glorious repute superior to all, raising the standard of victory. And the Lord omnipotent was with him wherever he wished:

13:42 Այս լուր քաջութեան եւ քաջախորհուրդ զպատերազմացն մղելոյ զյարձակմունս եհաս առ զօրագլուխն Բուխայ. եւ դարձաւ սիրտ նորա ի վերայ նորա սիրով խաղաղութեան. եւ ետ բերել նմա ըստ օրինի գլխապետութեան սուսեր իշխանական ընդ մէջ արկեալ եւ գօտի արիական շրջապատեալ զմիջաւ, քուքք խիզախողք եւ երիվար բարձրավիզ, ոտնատորոփ խրոխտալիր, յարմարական առ ընթացս պատերազմականս:
| 13:42 When news of his [Gurgēn’s] valour and strategic skill in mounting attacks reached the general, Bugha’s heart turned towards him in peaceful friendship. He had brought to him, as the due of a general, a princely sword to gird him and a noble belt to encircle his waist, rods as batons, and a spirited horse that stamped its foot imperiously, ideal for riding to war:

13:43 Եւ կացոյց զնա իշխան յիւրում հաւատարիմ տեղւոջ, եւ այնպէս բարեձեւագոյն ճոխացոյց զայրն երեւելի:
| 13:43 He appointed him prince to be trusted in his own stead, and thus promoted him to the highest eminence:

13:44 Այլ ներքին եւ արտաքին յարձակմունքն ոչ կարէին ի ներքս դիմել մարտնչել ընդ անյաղթ զօրութեան զօրացելոյն ի Քրիստոսէ:
| 13:44 Neither inner nor outer attacks were able to prevail against the victorious power of this man strengthened by Christ:

13:45 Բայց ես յանհունս ձգեմ զզարմացմանն յեղանակս, թէ զիա՞րդ բաւել տոկայր, անձանձրանալի բերելով զաշխատութեանն աճմունսն. եւ նախ քան զմտացն յօժարագոյն առ հանդէսսն յառաջանալ՝ զմարմնոյն պնդութիւն անհանգիստ առ ճակատամարտսն յարատեւել:
| 13:45 But I must express my profound astonishment at how he could endure the insufferable multiplication of labour, the bodily effort of ceaseless perseverance in battle, not to mention his enthusiasm in combat:

13:46 Բայց արդ որպէս յառաջագոյն հատուցի զարտաքոյ պարսաւանաց զիս ներքոյ գրել, վասն ոչ ոճով զսորայս կարգել դնել ի շարի աստ զշարագրածս, վասն ոչ բաւելոյ զանչափութիւնն ի մի վայր գումարել յանմասնաւորաբար նշանակութեամբ, մանաւանդ զի յառաջագոյն քան զմեզ այլոց ոմանց բանակարգեալ գրեալ հաւաքեալ է ի մի շար:
| 13:46 However, as earlier, I have decided to put myself beyond reproach for not setting down methodically and in order my description of the man. For it is impossible to gather in one spot the superabundance [of his deeds], or to indicate all the details, especially because some others have written [about them] before us and have set down a comprehensive account:

13:47 Յետ անցանելոյ չորից ամաց, յորում ժամանակի տէր Զաքարիայ ունէր զաթոռ հայրապետութեան Հայոց կաթողիկոսութեան՝ դարձեալ Գրիգոր եղբայր Աշոտի Վասպուրական իշխանի յԱփհազաց աշխարհէն՝ նոցուն օգնականութեամբ եւ Վրաց զօրու ընտիր գոլով՝ եկն եմուտ յաշխարհս Վասպուրական՝ տալ պատերազմ ընդ Գուրգինայ. բայց իբրեւ գիտացին զօրքն որ ընդ նմա եկեալ էին զնորա քաջակարծրագոյն արիութիւնն՝ եւ պատճառանօք այս ինչ այն ինչ դարձեալ դարձան յանցնիւր տեղի:
| 13:47 After four years had passed, during which time Lord Zak’aria held the patriarchal throne of the Catholicosate of Armenia, Grigor the brother of Ashot prince of Vaspurakan returned from the land of the Apkhaz. With their support and that of elite Gēorgian troops he entered the land of Vaspurakan to wage war against Gurgēn. But when the troops who accompanied him realised the latter’s unshakeable valour, they returned to their own territories on various pretexts:

13:48 Իսկ Գրիգորի ոչ բերելով զընդդիմակացսն նորա կատարել՝ խօսի ընդ նմա սիրով խաղաղութեան, եւ բաժանել զաշխարհս յերկուս՝ տեղի ետուն միմեանց ի խաղաղութիւն:
| 13:48 So Grigor, unable to carry through his opposition, treated with him [Gurgēn] on terms of peace and friendship for the division of the land into two; they mutually agreed to peace:

13:49 Բայց խռովիչքն ատեցողքն խաղաղութեան ոչ դադարէին նիւթել զհակառակս բարւոյն եւ զաճմունս չարին. մանաւանդ Վասակ որ զկարծեալ իշխանական անունն յինքեան բերէր:
| 13:49 However, the disturbers and enemies of peace did not cease scheming against the good or increasing the evil— especially Vasak, who attributed to himself the supposed title of prince:

13:50 Բայց Գուրգէն թէպէտ եւ գտանէր զնենգիչսն իւր՝ ոչ ումեք զփոխարէն չարին հատուցանէր. բայց զՎասակն յամենայն ժամ իբրեւ ընդ խաղ ի բուռն առնելով արձակէր խաղաղութեամբ:
| 13:50 But although Gurgēn recognised those deceiving him, he did not requite for the evil done; but every time he seized him he let Vasak go in peace, treating it as a jest:

13:51 Ընդ նոյն ժամանակս եկն Վահան Աշոտի որդի, հօրեղբօրորդի Սահակայ ի գերութենէն՝ նուաճել զաշխարհս, եւ գունդ կազմեալ ընդդէմ Գուրգինայ՝ եւ ինքն զպարտութիւն քան զյաղթութիւն յինքն կրէր:
| 13:51 At the same time Vahan, son of Ashot and nephew of Sahak, returned from captivity. Intending to seize the land he raised a force to oppose Gurgēn, but sustained a defeat rather than victory:

13:52 Եւ Գուրգէն նստէր յոստանին Ռշտունեաց յամրաձեւ բերդին. եւ Վահան հասեալ յանկարծուստ ի վերայ նորա, այն ինչ ընդ միտ ածելով ստնանել ինչ Գուրգինայ. եւ նորա ելեալ սակաւ արամբք՝ իբրեւ ջուր ընդ զառ ի վայրն հոսեալ՝ արար հալածական զՎահան եւ զզօրս նորա. եւ իջեալ ի դաշտավայրն, խումբ արարեալ, ճակատ կազմեալ ընդխառնեցան ի պատերազմ. եւ զբազումս դիաթաւալ կացուցեալ, ընդ որս էր Շապուհ նահապետն Ամատունեաց յանկելոց վիրաւորացն:
| 13:52 Gurgēn was residing in the secure fortress of the capital of Ṙshtunik’ when Vahan suddenly attacked him with the intention of acquiring some of Gurgēn’s [land]. The latter made a sortie with a few men, rushing down like a torrent of water, and expelled Vahan and his troops. Descending to the plain, they mustered together, drew up line, and joined battle. Many they slaughtered, and Shapuh the prince of the Amatuni family was among the wounded who fell:

13:53 Եւ այն ինչ պատահեալ Գուրգէն հարուստ գնդի Վահանայ ի յառուամէջս մուրին՝ ի բազում քան թէ սակաւ սուսերս ծեծեցին զնա, մինչեւ ոմն Ջուանշէր անուն յետուստ յանկարծ հարեալ վիրաւորեաց զԳուրգէն. իսկ նա առ երագութեան ձեռին ձգեալ զսուսերն՝ եհար զերեսս Ջուանշիրայն, եւ խլեաց զաչս նորա, եւ ինքն դարձաւ մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ, եմուտ յամրական տեղիսն:
| 13:53 Gurgēn encountered the large force of Vahan in a murky ditch; not a few swords struck at him, and a certain Juanshēr unexpectedly smote Gurgēn from behind, wounding him. But with rapid hand he drew his sword, hit Juansher in the face, putting out his eyes, and returned after this great victory to his fortified position:

13:54 Եւ յետ աւուրց ինչ դարձեալ դառնայ Վահան ի Սամառայ, զեկուցանել Աշոտի որ ինչ գործեցաւն: Բայց Գրիգոր կեցեալ յետ դարձին իւրոյ զմի ամ՝ մեռանի իւրով մահուամբ: Եւ տարեալ հանգուցանեն զնա ի վանս սուրբ Խաչին յԱղբագ գաւառի:
| 13:54 After a few days Vahan went back to Samarra to inform Ashot what had transpired. But Grigor lived for one year after his return, and died. They took him and buried him in the monastery of the Holy Cross in the province of Ałbag:

13:55 Իսկ Գուրգէն ընթացեալ զհետ հանդիսի պատերազմող նահատակութեանցն, անդուլ լինելով զցայգ եւ զցերեկ հանդերձ որ ընդ նմա միաբանեալ ազատագունդ զօրացն, եւ ոչ ըստ տեղիս տեղիս ցուցանէին զհանդէս մարտիցն եւ զյաղթութեանն քաջութիւն, այլ բոլորովիմբ ամենայն ուրեք ախոյեանարձակ սլացմամբ ընթանայր. եւ իբրեւ զմի անձն, վառեալ ի զէն եւ ի սուր եւ ի ճակատամարտ՝ հասեալ յամուրս՝ տապալէր զզօրութիւն նոցա սրով եւ աղեղամբ, ի փայլիւն սուսերի եւ նիզակի եւ ի գիշերամարտ նահատակութեանց:
| 13:55 But Gurgēn pursued his course of heroic encounters in battle. Ceaselessly, day and night, he and the noble troops who had joined him did not merely demonstrate their prowess and victorious courage in certain places but everywhere rushed to the assault like champions. Like a single person, in armour and [bearing] a sword for battle, they attacked fortresses and beat down their garrisons with sword and bow, to the flashing of sword and lance, and even in combats by night:

13:56 ըստ նմանութեանն քաջ զօրավարին Իսրայէլի Յեսուայ կամ Գէդէովնի կամ թէ նոյն ինքն նահապետին Աբրահամու, ի վերայ հասեալ Քանանացւոց, զյաւէտ յաղթութեան նահատակութիւն նահատակեալ՝ եւ դառնայ մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ:
| 13:56 Just as the valiant general of Israel, Joshua, or Gideon, or even the very patriarch Abraham, attacking the Canaanites, waged a continuously victorious struggle and returned in great triumph:

13:57 Նմանապէս, կամ թէ եւս հրաշափառագոյն զյաղթութեան մարտսն յօրինեալ յարդարեաց զպարտութիւն ի վերայ ազգին Իսմայէլի մեծ զօրավարն Գուրգէն, եւ իսպառ կանգնեաց զնշանակ յաղթութեան ամենեւին ամենայն ուրեք ընդ ամենայն տեղիս. եւ իբրեւ զքաջ հովիւն դրուատեալ ի փրկչէն՝ զանձն իւր եդ ի վերայ խաշանց ընդդէմ ապականարար գայլոցն, յարձակեալ յանխնայ դիմեցուածովք, յարիւն եւ յապաժոյժ, ի սատակումն եւ ի ծախումն սրոյ մատնեաց բոլորովիմբ զյարձակեալս նեղիչս աշխարհիս. եւ օրհնեցաւ եւ դրուատեցաւ ի հեռաւորաց եւ ի մերձաւորաց, բնակաց եւ եկաց աշխարհիս:
| 13:57 such or even more gloriously victorious battles did the great general Gurgēn win over the race of Ismael, setting up the standard of victory everywhere and in all places. Like the brave shepherd praised by the Saviour, he gave his life for his sheep opposing the ravenous wolves, mercilessly rushing to the assault, as he delivered all the violent oppressors of our country to blood and destruction, to slaughter and death by the sword. He was blessed and eulogised by those far and near, by the natives and foreigners in the land:

13:58 Եւ խռովեցան առ հասարակ ազգքն տաճկականք յերեսաց նորա եւ ահիւ մեծաւ ըմբռնեալք լինէին. զի զօրհասն ի վերայ ինքեանց առանց երկբայութեան հաստատեալ տեսանէին:
| 13:58 The tribes of Muslims were altogether atremble at the sight of him and distraught with great fear, for they saw their demise confirmed without a doubt:

13:59 Եւ սրբեալ զերկիրս ի պղծութենէ եւ ի նենգութենէ նեղութեանցն, իբրեւ զՅուդայ Մակաբայեցի զԱնտիոքայն սրբելով զանաստուածութիւնն յԻսրայէլէ՝ արար խաղաղութիւն նոցա որոց տիրէին:
| 13:59 He cleansed the land from the impurity and deceit of its oppressors, like Judas Maccabee purifying the impiety of Antiochus from Israel, and made peace for all his subjects:
