18:0 Վասն մաքառման Աշոտ իշխանի ընդ Ութմանիկսն եւ տեղաթափս առնելոյ զյափշտակեալսն ի նոցանէ:
| 18:0 Concerning the strife of Prince Ashot with the Ut’maniks and his freeing of the places which had been seized by them:

18:1 Բայց Աշոտ գնացեալ տալ պատերազմ ընդ ծովեզրեցիսն որք Ութմանիկ կոչին, որք ամրանային ի յԱմիւկ անկասկածելի քարանձաւին. վասն զի ըստ Պտղոմեայ եւ Աղէքսանդրի սահմանադրութեանն, կամ թէ մեր Արտաշէսի որդւոյ Սանատրկոյ՝ ի Վասպուրական գաւառացն համար թուեալ է գաւառն այն, զոր [Ճ] ամոյ յառաջ հանեալ էր բռնակալութեանն Տաճկաց ի Վասպուրական պետութենէ:
| 18:1 Ashot went to wage war with the people who live on the lakeshore called Ut’manik, and who were secure in the impregnable rock of Amiuk. For according to the demarcation of Ptolemy and Alexander, or of our Artashēs son of Sanatruk, that province was reckoned among the provinces of Vaspurakan; and one hundred years previously it had been forcibly removed from the jurisdiction of Vaspurakan by the Muslims:

18:2 Իսկ ընդ աւուրսն ընդ այնոսիկ սպանեալ էր Ութմանկացն, որ յամուրսն նստէին՝ զՌստոմ Վարաժնունի, որ զտանուտերական պատիւն յայնժամ ունէր զՎասպուրական աշխարհիս. եւ ի վերայ նոցա զօրաժողով եղեալ Աշոտ եւ որդի իւր Դերանիկն, առնել մարտ պատերազմի ընդ ամրոցին:
| 18:2 In those days the Ut’maniks, who lived in the fortresses [of that province] had killed Ṙstom Varazhnuni, who at that time held the rank of tanutēr of the land of Vaspurakan. So Ashot and his son Derenik gathered a force to attack them in the castle:

18:3 Բայց քանզի անպատերազմելի էր ամրոցն, միայն բաւականաւն ռոճկաց մի վատնիցի՝ առեալ իշխանին զՎարագ ի ձեռանէ Տաճկացն, զի յինքեանս գրաւեալ ընդ հարկաւ ծառայեցուցանէին զպաշտօնեայս սրբոյ Խաչին, մանաւանդ զի եւ զգլխաւոր վանացն զհայրն, որում Գրիգոր անուանէր՝ զնա կալեալ եդեալ ի խորափոր խաւարային բանտի:
| 18:3 But because the castle was unassailable unless supplies ran out, the prince took Varag from the control of the Muslims. For they had seized it and subjected to taxation the monks of the Holy Cross, and had even captured the abbot of the monastery who was called Grigor, and put him in a deep and gloomy dungeon:

18:4 Որում որոնել փրծանել ի վտանգաւոր բանտէ: Եւ անտի դարձեալ դառնայր Աշոտ ընդ միւս եւս ամրականն ընդ ոստոզերծ քարանձաւի, ի յարեւելից կուսէ լերինն Վարագայ, ի վերայ գեաւղջն Կոխպանից, հանդէպ եկեղեցւոյն սրբոյն Հռովփսիմեայ, զոր շինեալ էր սրբոյն Գրիգորի ի վերայ գեաւղջն Ահեւականից ի կատարածի լուսաւորութեանն Հայոց:
| 18:4 Ashot sought to free him from his dangerous imprisonment. Then he turned against another stronghold, a freestanding rock to the east of the mountain of Varag above the village of Kokhpanik’, opposite the church of Saint Hṙip’simē which Saint Gregory had built above the village of Ahevakank’ at the completion of the conversion of Armenia:

18:5 Քանզի էր ի տեղին այն յառաջագոյն տեղի մեհենից Վահեավահանի: Այլ իբրեւ այն ինչ մերձ լինէր ամրոցն ի պաշարումն՝ Ամդայինն Յիսէ, որ Շեհի որդին, որ զզօրապետութիւնն Հայոց ունէր, ճանաչէր՝ ի հրապոյրս մանազաւեան պետոյն եւ ութմանացն ելեալ՝ երագապէս եկն եհաս ի վերայ Աշոտի [ԺԵ] հազարաւ հեծելօք վառելովք. որոց թողեալ զգործ պատերազմի ամրոցին՝ դարձաւ գնաց աներկիւղ քաջասրտութեամբ ընդդէմ նորա օժնդակ զօրու Գուրգինի:
| 18:5 For in that spot had formerly been the site of temples of Vaheavahan. But when he had approached the stronghold to besiege it, Yisē of Amida, son of Sheh, who held the position of commander- in- chief of Armenia, hurried at the instigation of the chief of Manazav and the Ut’maniks, and arrived in haste to attack Ashot with seventeen thousand armed cavalry. Abandoning the assault on the fortress, he turned with fearless courage to oppose him with the support of Gurgēn’s troops:

18:6 եւ ղաշիկ արարեալ յայնկոյս քան զՎանտոսպ, ի տեղւոջն արձանաշար քարակարկառ գոգաձեւ միջոցի երկուց բլրակաց, որ հայի յԵրիվարաց արկման դաշտն, ի վերայ Լեզուոյ գեաւղջն, որ զԱրայն գեղեցիկ առասպելաբանեն սպիանած վիրացն սպանելոցն ի մանկանցն Շամիրամայ:
| 18:6 He took up his position on the other side of Vantosp in a rocky, stony hollow between two hills that overlooked the plain of Erivarats’- arkman above the village of Lezu, where the fable is told that Ara the handsome, killed by the troops of Semiramis, was cured:

18:7 Եւ ամիրայն Յիսէ խաղացեալ բազմաձեռն զօրուն՝ յառաջ խաղայ ընդ Աքաղայու կատար ասացեալ բլուրն:
| 18:7 The emir Yisē with his numerous army advanced towards the hill called the summit of Ak’ałay:

18:8 Իսկ Աշոտ մտրակեալ զօրասպայզինեալ երիվարն սպառազէն կազմեալ ի մարտ պատրաստել, շահատակելով գունակ ի խաղս գնդակաց, զսակաւաւորութիւնն իւր հազարաւորս համարելով, քանզի ոչ ունէր աւելի քան [ԶԲ] հազարս հեծելոց:
| 18:8 But Ashot spurred on his horse, which was covered in armour, and prepared for battle. He led the attack, seemingly mocking the [enemy] forces and reckoning his own small numbers in the thousands; for he did not have more than two thousand cavalry:

18:9 Յայնժամ Վահան հայր Գագկայ Ապումրուանայ եւ ինքն Գագիկ առնէին համոզել ի մէջ նոցա:
| 18:9 At that point Vahan, father of Gagik Apumruan, and Gagik himself attempted to reconcile the parties:

18:10 Եւ առ չանսալն՝ յետուստ կողմանէ Վահան հարեալ ի գաղտնիս զգարշապար երիվարին՝ արար կաղանալ նժոյգ ասպարակողին. յորում եւ ոմն հաւատարիմ Յիսէի Սէմ անուն յառաջ խաղացեալ՝ պատահէ իշխանին, ընդ Վահանայ խորհրդակցեալ խորհել զխաղաղութիւն եւ զմարտն գրգռեալ ցածուցանել եւ զվառեալ պատերազմն շիջուցանել. զոր ոչ անունկնդիր լեալ Աշոտ՝ վերջոտնեալ եկն բանակեցաւ յԱրտաշեսեան աւանին, եւ Յիսէ ի Վան քաղաքի:
| 18:10 Since [Ashot] did not agree, Vahan secretly struck the heel from behind and lamed the horse of the armed rider called Sem, a confidant of Yisē’s. He was advancing to meet the prince, and was in agreement with Vahan to aim at peace, calm the dispute that had arisen, and quench the conflict that had flared up. To these [proposals] Ashot was not heedless; he retreated and encamped in the town of Artashēs, while Yisē [encamped] in the city of Van:

18:11 Նոյնժամայն գնացին Դերանիկն եւ Գագիկ մտին առաջի Յիսէի, խօսեցան բանս խաղաղութեան, ետուն պատանդս յանձնառութեամբ հարկացն արքունի, եւ դարձուցին ընդ նոյն ճանապարհ ընդ որ եկեալ էր, ոչ թողացուցին նմա ելանել ընդ աշխարհն Վասպուրական. եւ դարձեալ գնաց եհաս ի Պարտաւ յաշխարհն Գարգարացւոց:
| 18:11 At the same time Derenik and Gagik came before Yisē, made peace proposals, gave hostages as an undertaking [to pay] taxes to the caliph, and made him return by the same road that he had come, not allowing him to pass through the land of Vaspurakan. He [Yisē] returned to Partaw in the land of the Gargarats’ik’:

18:12 Եւ իշխանքն մեր ստացան ճոխագոյն հոյակապ անուն ի մէջ Հայաստանեայց, եւ այլ ոչ եւս այնուհետեւ համարձակ յանձն առնոյր մտանել ընդ աշխարհս Վասպուրական:
| 18:12 So our princes acquired glorious and splendid fame in Armenia. Thenceforth he never dared to enter the land of Vaspurakan:

18:13 Արդ Աշոտի կեցեալ ամս [ԺԹ], տեւեալ իշխանական ճոխութեանն [ԺԶ] ամ յառաջ քան զգերութիւնն Հայոց, եւ [Ե] ամ ի գերութեանն արարեալ, եւ [Զ] ամ կեցեալ յետ գերադարձն լինելոյ, եւ մտեալ յաշխարհս՝ համարձակ զքրիստոնէութեանն ունելով զկրօնաւորութիւն, եւ ի զղջել յապաշաւ ի վերայ ուրացութեանն զՔրիստոս լինելով:
| 18:13 Now Ashot was aged nineteen years [when he became prince]; he exercised the dignity of prince for sixteen years before the captivity of the Armenians, was five years in captivity, and lived for six years after returning from captivity. On entering his land, he resolutely practiced the Christian religion, repenting for his denial of Christ:

18:14 Բայց զի՞նչ աստանօր ինձ ասելի է, զի թէպէտ դառնալով դարձան յայտնապէս յերկրպագութիւնն Քրիստոսի Աստուծոյ մերոյ՝ այլ զկանոնական սահմանադրութիւնսն ոչ բերելով ուղղակի, ոչ միայն Աշոտ, այլ եւ ամենայն իշխանքն Հայոց, որք գերադարձքն եղեն:
| 18:14 But what should I say here? For although they openly came back to the worship of Christ our God, yet they did not carry out the due canonical regulations— not only Ashot but also all the Armenian princes who had returned from captivity:

18:15 զուրացութեանն ի բաց դնելով զվատթարութիւն, սակայն կանոնական սահմանադրութեանն արտաքոյ մնացեալ, գայթ ի գայթս զքրիստոնէութեանն վարս բերելով անառակութեամբք եւ արբեցութեամբ, խառն անկողնօք եւ պղծութեամբք, աղտապիղծ սարսափելի եւ գարշելի խառնակութեամբ արուապղծութեամբք, որ անցուցանէ զանցանէ զանասնական խառնակութեամբքն երիքովեան եւ սոդոմական լրբութեամբ, անամօթաբար այր զարամբք բորբոքեալ, դեզադէզ զհրացանն բերելով յերկնուստ զանզրաւ կիզումնն, անցուցեալ զանցուցեալ զսատակչական կործանմանն ջրհեղեղին:
| 18:15 They put aside the cowardice of their apostasy but remained outside the canonical statutes, leading scandalous Christian lives in debauchery and drunkenness, in adultery and lewdness, engaging in revolting and horrible homosexual acts which exceeded the foul bestialities of Jericho and Sodom, man shamelessly lusting for man and piling up infinite flames from heaven that surpass the devastating destruction of the flood:

18:16 Զի նոքա վասն ի կանայսն մոլելոյ ընդ դստերսն Կայէնի խառնակելով՝ ջրով կործանեցան. իսկ որք արուք ընդ արուս զխայտառակութիւն գործէին՝ ծծմբախառն հրով բորբոքեցան, զյաւիտենական հրոյն զառհաւատչեայս յինքեանս կրելով, եւ յերկրորդումն հանդերձեալ են վերստին մտանել ի տանջանս յաւիտենականս, ուր որդն ոչ վախճանի եւ հուրն ոչ շիջանի:
| 18:16 For they were mad for women, copulating with the daughters of Cain, and were destroyed by water; while the men who worked infamous deeds with men were consumed by fire mixed with sulphur, enduring in themselves the token of the eternal fire. At the second [coming] they will again undergo eternal torments, where the worm does not die and the fire is not extinguished:

18:17 Արդ եթէ Սոդոմայեցիքն, որ հրով զվրիժուցն հատուցին փոխարէնս, եւ դարձեալ տանջելոց են՝ որք բովանդակ չարիւք անդր երթալոց են ո՞րպիսի ակնկալութիւն տանջանաց զանց արասցէ զնոքօք. արդ տես, մեղք քան զմեղս եւ տանջանք քան զտանջանս:
| 18:17 So as the Sodomites who paid the penalty with fire will be tortured again, for those who will act in every evil fashion, what an expectation of torments will surpass theirs! See, sin over sin and torments over torments:

18:18 Բայց Աշոտ, իբրեւ եհաս ժամ ելիցն իւր յաշխարհէս՝ յանհունս բերեալ զզեղջ եւ զապաշաւանս յորդահոսան արտասուօք զխոստովանողականն ի դիմի հարեալ միջնորդութիւնն, յուսացեալ ի մարդասիրութիւնն Քրիստոսի, զմաքսաւորին եւ զաւազակին զյետնորդսն բարբառեալ, եւ զփրկական մարմին եւ արիւն որդւոյն Աստուծոյ հայցեալ հաւատով ի թողութիւն մեղաց, յուսացեալ ի քաղցրութիւնն Աստուծոյ:
| 18:18 When the time for Ashot’s departure from his world arrived, he was plunged into unfathomable remorse and regret; with flowing tears he made the confession of faith, hoping in the mercy of Christ and repeating the last words of the tax gatherer and the thief. With faith he looked to the saving Body and Blood of the Son of God for the forgiveness of sins, hoping in God’s kindness:

18:19 Զոր եւ ես ոչ արհամարհելով այպանեմ զզղջմանն եւ զապաշաւանացն, զի «որ կարդասցէ զանուն Տեառն կեցցէ:
| 18:19 I do not despise or mock his remorse and repentence, for “ who will utter the name of the Lord will live:

18:20 Բայց անյայտք են եթէ կատարելանան, զի հազիւ սպիքն գան, ըստ որումն սրբազանի տրամաբանութեան:
| 18:20 But it is unclear whether they were effective, for with difficulty are scars cleaned away by the exercise of words:
|
18:21 Բայց ի տան հօրն Քրիստոսի օթեւանք բազում են. թերեւս արտաքոյ տանջանացն կայցեն մնայցեն, թէպէտ եւ ոչ ընդ փեսային վայելեն ի հարսանիսն:
| 18:21 However, in the house of Christ’s Father there are many mansions. Perhaps they will remain free of torments, although they will not enjoy the wedding with the bridegroom:

18:22 Եւ այս արտաքոյ անյուսութեանն ելանելով, հայեցեալ ի քաղցրութիւնն Աստուծոյ:
| 18:22 He [Ashot] departed not in despair, looking to the kindness of God:
|
18:23 Եւ կատարեալ Աշոտ զկեանս իւր՝ մեռաւ ի Վանտոսպ գաւառի [ՅԻԳ] թուականութեանն Հայոց, յամսեանն հոռի, որ օր [Զ] էր ամսոյն, յաւուր հինգշաբաթոջ. եւ տարեալ հանգուցանեն ընդ եղբարս իւր ի վանս սուրբ Խաչին յԱղբագ գաւառի:
| 18:23 When Ashot had completed his life, he died in the province of Vantosp, in [323] of the Armenian era, in the month of Hori, the sixth day of the month, on a Thursday. They laid him to rest with his brothers in the monastery of the Holy Cross in the province of Ałbag:
