3:0 Փայլումն փառազարդութեան մի անգամայն եւ երեւումն շնորհացն Աստուծոյ ի վերայ մանկան Գագկայ, եւ սպանումն Ապումրունայ ի ձեռաց նորա մեծապէս արութեամբ, եւ որ ինչ զնմանէ են գովեստք:
| 3:0 The glorious effulgence and appearance of God’s grace over the young Gagik; and the killing of Apumruan at his hands most valiantly; and praises concerning him:

3:1 Քանզի կանխագիտութեամբն իւրով ամենաթագաւորն Քրիստոս յառաջագոյն նկատեալ զերջանիկ մանուկն Գագիկ, անօթ ընտրութեան արժանի իւրոցն լինել շնորհաց, եւ գիտելով զնա թէ այսպիսի լինելոց է՝ ետ նմա հոգի զօրութեան եւ իմաստութեան. կատարելով ի վերայ նորա զասացեալն ի մարգարէէն, թէ «թագաւոր արդար կանգնէ զաշխարհ:
| 3:1 In his foreknowledge Christ the king of all had previously designated the blessed youth Gagik as a chosen vessel worthy of his grace. Knowing that he would become such a person, he bestowed on him the spirit of power and wisdom, fulfilling in him what had been said by the prophet: “ A just king re- establishes the land:
|
3:2 Որով եւ փրկեաց իսկ զՀայաստան աշխարհս ի ծանր ծանր աղետից, կուռ զկնի միմեանց եկելոց, եւ ի բազմախուռն պատերազմաց եղելոց ի նորայն դարս:
| 3:2 Through him he did indeed save Armenia from very grievous afflictions that unremittingly had followed on each other, and from frequent wars that occurred in his generation:
|
3:3 Որ եւ անդստին իսկ ի տղայական հասակէն արմատ բարութեան ի վեր երեւէր:
| 3:3 Even from a youthful age he was a budding source of virtue:
|
3:4 Ուստի եւ զարմանք մեծամեծք են ինձ ի վերայ մանկանն, զի ոչ պարգեւս կամ ինչս շնորհել ումեք ձեռնհաս էր, եւ ոչ իշխանական ինչ հրամանաւ հարկեցուցանել զոք կարէր. եւ տեարք եւ ազատք աշխարհին միշտ զնորայն սիրովն գային, զի իմաստութիւն ի շրթանց նորա բղխէր առաւել քան զոսկի ընտիր, եւ համեստութեան քաղցրութեանն, միանգամայն եւ քաջապէս արութեանն շնորհք ի վերայ նորա բացափայլեալ՝ զամենեցուն յուսով լնուին զսիրտս:
| 3:4 Hence the youth is a great source of amazement to me: although he had neither gifts nor possessions to grant anyone, nor with princely authority could he impose taxes on anyone, yet the lords and nobles of the land always treated him in a friendly way. For wisdom flowed from his lips purer than gold, and the grace of sweet modesty coupled with brave valour shone out over him, filling the hearts of all with hope:

3:5 Ուրանօր արիաբար վառեալ, այն ինչ մինչդեռ չեւ եւս եղեալ էր ամաց [ԺԵ–ից]՝ արկ ի միտս իւր զխորհուրդս առն պատերազմողի, սպանանել զԱպումրուան:
| 3:5 His valour was already exhibited before he was yet fifteen years of age, when he made the decision of a true warrior to kill Apumruan:

3:6 Եւ իբրեւ ժամ մի լինէր պարապոյ՝ առեալ ընդ իւր զխորհրդակիցս իւր եհաս ի վերայ նորա, եւ սրախողխող արարեալ զնա ի Վան աւանի յասպարիսին տեղւոջ՝ ընկեցիկ առնէ յոտս երիվարին. եւ հատեալ զգլուխն բարձեալ տանի յամրոցն Աշինոտ, ուր էրն Գուրգէն, նմանապէս եւ ի բերդն Կոտորոց ի ձորն Անձախոյ, յորում էրն Աշոտ, որք անյուսացեալ էին փրկութեան անձանց:
| 3:6 When the moment was favourable, he took his conspirators with him, attacked [Apumruan], and put him to death by the sword in a park of the town of Van. Throwing him at his horse’s feet, he cut off his head— which he brought to the fortress of Ashinot where Gurgēn was, and likewise to the castle of Kotor in the valley of Andzakh were Ashot was. Both of them had despaired of deliverance:

3:7 Եւ հանեալ զնոսա անտի՝ տայ զմատանի ի ձեռս Աշոտոյ եւ տիրեցուցանէ սեփհական ժառանգութեանն հանդերձ իշխանական ճոխութեամբ:
| 3:7 Liberating them, he gave [the] ring into Ashot’s hands, and made him master of his own inheritance with the dignity of prince:
|
3:8 Սա, որպէս կարծեմ՝ թոյլ տալով Աստուծոյ առնու զվրէժ արեան հօր իւրոյ ի գլխոյ Ապումրուանայ: Վասն զի եւ նա մի էր ի գործակցաց չարին, զոր վերագոյնն ասացաք, ուր եւ ստէպ ստէպ միշտ զսորայս ոչ դանդաղիմ դրուատել զշնորհս:
| 3:8 It was God, as I suppose, who permitted him to take vengeance for his father’s blood from Apumruan, since he was one of the accomplices of the Evil One, as we mentioned above. So I do not hesitate to extol his virtues assiduously:

3:9 Յաղագս սորա հաւաստապէս եւ յոյժ ըղձալի է ինձ առնել բանից դեգերանս ի սմա եւ ի սորին գործս եւ գովեստս:
| 3:9 Truly I am very eager to compose descriptions and praises of him and his deeds:
|
3:10 Քանզի սա ազգի նսեմացելոյ ջահ վառեալ եդեալ ի բարձրադիտակ անառիկ ամրոցի, շուրջանակի պարսպեալ զօրութեամբն Աստուծոյ՝ աննուաղ պահեցաւ ի չորեքծագեան սաստկագոյն հողմոց թշնամեաց ի սա հնչելոց. որ ոչ միայն աղօտացաւ, այլ եւ ի ձեռն պնդակազմ հաւատոյ ճօճ առեալ ցոլացեալ կիզեաց զթշնամիս տան հօր իւրոյ:
| 3:10 Because for a nation that was in darkness he placed a shining torch on the highest point of a castle that was fortified around with the power of God. It was preserved unextinguished from the hostile winds that blew fiercely from four directions. Not only was he himself [not] obscured, but through his firm faith he made the enemies of his father’s house totter, and he utterly consumed them:

3:11 Սա աշտարակ բարձրաբերձ զօրաւոր վիմօք, կապարայօդ հիւսմամբ շարադրեալ իբրեւ զպարիսպ պղնձի, հաստահեղոյս բեւեռմամբ, անխրամատելի ի թշնամեաց, միանգամայն եւ իբրեւ զսիւն երկաթի, ի մէջ հարուստ խարսխաց, աստուածայոյս եւ անհաս զօրութեամբ, կանգնեալ ի բարձր տէրութեանս Հայոց՝ տեղի ապաւինի, որ ի թշնամեաց ոք փախիցէ յերեսաց:
| 3:11 He was a tall tower built with strong stones bonded in lead, like a wall of bronze, firmly nailed, unbreachable by the enemy; likewise, similar to an iron pillar on secure bases set up with inconceivable strength and hope in God over the sublime principality of Armenia; a place of refuge to which one could flee from the face of the enemy:

3:12 Սա սուսեր բանաւոր, երկնայնոցն հրացեալ զօրութեամբ, հատանօղ եւ ճառագայթարձակ փայլատակեալ ի վերայ գլխոց թշնամեաց, ահափետ արարեալ դադարեցուցանէ զխրոխտացեալսն ի վերայ եկեղեցւոյ եւ որ ինչ եկեղեցւոյ են կարգք:
| 3:12 He was a rational sword, blazing with the power of the heavenly [angels], glittering and casting rays over the heads of the enemy; casting terror into them, he brought to a halt those who waxed insolent against the church and the institutions of the church:
|
3:13 Սա ի համբակ հասակէ տղայական տիոցն իբրեւ զկորիւն առիւծու յարուցեալ սիգաքայլ նազելի ճոխութեամբ, ամբարձեալ զբազուկս ի վերայ թիկանց թշնամեաց, խորասոյզ առնելով զդարանակալս ի շաւղաց ոտից իւրոց, եւ ահարկու ձայնին գոչման ի ձեռն հրեշտակաց եւ հրովարտակաց յինքն ձգեալ կորզէ զբազում գանձս եւ զմթերս յօտար ազգաց, տիրելով բերդից եւ գաւառաց նոցա առաւել քան զհարս իւր:
| 3:13 From a youthful and inexperienced age he rose up like a lion cub delightful in his proud stride, raising his arms over the backs of the enemy, plunging those lying in ambush from the paths of their feet. With fearsome summoning voice, through messengers and decrees he wrested for himself many treasures and stores from foreign nations, controlling more of their castles and provinces than his fathers:

3:14 Եւ արդ քանզի չեւ եւս է ժամանակ գովասանութեան, այլ պատմութեան՝ առ նոյն անդր փութասցուք կարգ:
| 3:14 But since it is no longer the time for praise but for history, let us hasten back to the course of our narrative:
|
3:15 Իսկ իշխանն Աշոտ օժնդակեալ ի շնորհաց եւ ի բարձր բազկէ քաջի եւ արիացելոյ մանկանն Գագկայ՝ ըստ ասացելոյ իմաստնոյն, թէ «եղբայր յեղբօրէ օգնեալ եղիցի իբրեւ զքաղաք ամուր»՝ սկսաւ պայծառանալ օր ըստ օրէ յաթոռ հօր իւրոյ ամենաջողակ փառաւորութեամբ:
| 3:15 Now the prince Ashot was supported by the grace and high arm of the valiant and brave youth Gagik, according to the saying of the wise man: “ A brother helped by a brother will become like a strong city.” He began to render himself daily ever more illustrious on his father’s throne with victorious glory:

3:16 Զոր տեսեալ Սմբատայ թագաւորին Հայոց՝ առաքէ զեղբայր իւր զԴաւիթ եւ աղաչէ զիշխանն Աշոտ՝ մի մեկուսանալ ի նմանէ եւ մի ոխս պահել վասն ունելոյն զնա Գագկայ որդւոյ Վահանայ:
| 3:16 Seeing this, Smbat the king of Armenia sent his brother David to beg Prince Ashot not to become detached from him, nor to preserve rancour for his captivity by Gagik son of Vahan:
|
3:17 Զայս խնդրէ Սմբատ պարգեւս յԱշոտոյ քեռորդւոյ իւրոյ, ի կասկածի եղեալ, գուցէ գնասցէ Աշոտ միւսանգամ զհետ կոչողաց Ափշնի ըստ առաջնում նուագին, զոր վերագոյնն ասացաք:
| 3:17 Smbat asked this favour of Ashot his nephew because he was fearful that perhaps Ashot might once again follow the summons of Ap’shin, like the first time which we described above:
|
3:18 Վասն զի բազում խոստումն պարգեւաց եւ դաշինս ուխտից առաջի Աշոտի Ափշին արկանէ. որում ոչ հաւանի Աշոտ, փոխադարձելով նմա վասն անփոյթ առնելոյ զնա յաւուրս բանտին:
| 3:18 For Ap’shin was sending to Ashot many promises of gifts and treaty engagements. These Ashot did not accept, but he returned them since he had disregarded him during his days in prison:
|
3:19 Եւ երթեալ գնայ առ Սմբատ սիրով խաղաղութեամբ. ուստի եւ բազում փորձութիւնք անցին զմեօք վասն ոչ երթալոյ իշխանին առ ամիրայն Ափշին:
| 3:19 And he came to Smbat in friendship and peace, [saying]: “ Many trials have befallen us” because the prince did not go to the emir Ap’shin:
|
3:20 Իսկ Ափշնի ելեալ յերկիրս Հայոց անհուն զօրու եւ զինու՝ եւ գայ հասանէ ի վերայ Սմբատայ, եւ փախստական արարեալ մազապուր ընկենու յաշխարհն Վրաց:
| 3:20 Ap’shin came to Armenia with a numberless armed force and attacked Smbat, who escaped by the skin of his teeth and fled to Georgia:
|
3:21 Եւ անտի դարձեալ պաշարէ զբերդն Կարուց, եւ բացեալ զմթերեալ տունս գանձուց՝ առնու աւար բազում:
| 3:21 He then turned to besiege the castle of Kars, and opening up the stores of amassed treasures he took much booty:
|
3:22 Յայնժամ Աշոտ իշխանն Վասպուրական ճանապարհ արարեալ ընդ գաւառն Բագրեւանդ՝ արագ յիւրն անցանէ աշխարհ:
| 3:22 Then Ashot, prince of Vaspurakan, travelling through the province of Bagrevand, rapidly returned to his own land:
|
3:23 Իսկ Սմբատ թագաւորն Հայոց հրեշտակ առաքեալ՝ աղաչէ ի խաղաղութիւն զԱփշին, եւ գրաւական տալով զորդին զանդրանիկ. եւ նորա առեալ դառնայ եւ դիմէ ի վերայ Աշոտոյ մեծաւ սպառնալեօք, ոխս պահեալ վասն զնորայն արհամարհելով կոչումն, եւ եկեալ հասանէ ի գաւառն Թոռնաւան յաւուրս ձմերայնոյ:
| 3:23 But Smbat, the king of Armenia, sent a messenger to ask Ap’shin for peace, giving as hostage his eldest son. Taking the latter, he turned to attack Ashot with many threats, resentful of his despising his summons. He reached the province of T’oṙnavan in the wintertime:

3:24 Իսկ իշխանն Աշոտ եղբարբք հանդերձ եւ ամենայն տիրակոյտ ազատագունդ զօրօքն խորհուրդ արարեալ ասեն, «աւուրք սաստկութեան են եւ գործ պատերազմի, ո՞վ գիտէ ո՛յր ուրուք յաղթութիւնն լինիցի:
| 3:24 Ashot took counsel with his brothers and all the nobles of his army. They said: “ These are hard days and time of war. Who knows whose will be the victory:
|
3:25 Եւ խնայեալ ի սուրբ եկեղեցիս եւ ի հաւատացեալս՝ ել գնաց առ Ափշին, գրաւ մահու զանձն եդեալ, ուր եւ սիրոյ մեղադրանօք ել եւ ելս առնելով՝ պատճառեն միմեանց զինչ հաճոյ է կամաց:
| 3:25 In order to spare the holy churches and the faithful, he went to Ap’shin, risking death. With protestations of friendship they engaged in negotiations, falsifying to each other their true wishes:
|
3:26 Եւ դարձուցեալ զիշխանն Աշոտ մեծաւ պատուով եւ բազում եւ երեւելի պարգեւօք. բայց քանզի կասկած ի սրտից երկոցունցն ոչ մեկնեցաւ՝ գրաւականս խնդրէ Ափշին. եւ նորա տուեալ զեղբայրն զԳագիկ, եւ զկնի է ամսոյ առաքէ զԳուրգէն զկրտսերն եւ դարձուցանէ զԳագիկ:
| 3:26 He sent back Prince Ashot in great honour and with many fine gifts. But since suspicion had not departed from both their hearts, Ap’shin asked for hostages. So he gave his brother Gagik; seven months later he sent his youngest brother Gurgēn, and [Ap’shin] returned Gagik:

3:27 Իսկ ի գալ գարնայնոյն փախստեայ եղեալ Գուրգէն ի ձեռաց Ափշնի՝ գայ հասանէ առ եղբարս իւր ցրեալ զդաշինս սիրոյ. եւ նորա հետամուտ եղեալ ընդ քաղաքն Տփղիս, ոչ սակաւ հարստահարութիւն արարեալ գլխոյ Սմբատայ՝ առնու հարկս բազումս:
| 3:27 On the arrival of spring Gurgēn escaped from Ap’shin and reached his brothers, breaking the pact of friendship [with Ap’shin]. The latter pursued him to the city of Tiflis, causing Smbat no little loss, and taking much tribute:

3:28 Եւ անտի յառաջ մատուցեալ գայ հասանէ մինչեւ յաւանն Վան յաշխարհն Վասպուրական անթիւ բազմութեամբ:
| 3:28 From there he advanced as far as the city of Van in the land of Vaspurakan with a numberless host:
|
3:29 իսկ իշխանն Աշոտ եղբարբքն հանդերձ եւ ամենայն զօրօքն խոյս տուեալ ամրանայ ի ձորն Որսիրանից:
| 3:29 But Prince Ashot with his brothers and all his troops retreated and fortified themselves in the valley of Orsirank’:
|
3:30 Յայնժամ Հասան որդի Վասակայ դենադարձի, զոր վերագոյնն ասացաք, այրն անօրէն, ժանտ եւ ապարասան, աւազակաց հայր, սպանողաց մայր եւ ամենայն անօրէնութեան ծնօղ, դարձեալ մոլեգնի հայրենի չարեօքն յաղթեալ, զխոստովանութիւնն հազիւ թէ պահեալ ամբողջ, ձեռն տայ յամիրայն Ափշին, եւ բազում վնասս կործանման ստանայ հաւատացելոց եւ սուրբ եկեղեցեաց. անձնամատն եղեալ դուռն բանայ չարեաց, դարանս մահաբեր գործէ սատանայի զգածեալ հնարիւք:
| 3:30 Then Hasan, son of Vasak the apostate, whom we mentioned above, gave support to the emir Ap’shin. That impious, baneful, and insolent man, father of brigands, mother of murderers, begetter of all impiety, was overcome by the raging wickedness of his father, scarcely preserving his faith intact. He inflicted much damage and destruction on the believers and on the holy churches; the traitor opened the gate to misfortunes, and set mortal traps, being familiar with the wiles of Satan:

3:31 Իսկ ամիրային թողլով երկուս ոստիկանս ներքինիս բազում հեծելովք ի մեծն Վան եւ յՈստանն աւան, որոյ անուն ճանաչիւր առաջնոյն Սափի. եւ ինքն երթեալ ի գաւառն Աղբագ՝ դադարէ ի Յադամակերտն աւանի:
| 3:31 However, leaving two eunuchs, the first of whom was called Sap’i, as governors with many cavalry in the great [city] of Van and the town of Ostan, the emir himself went to the province of Ałbag and stopped at the town of Hadamakert:
|
3:32 Եւ առաքէ զայր մի ներքինի, որում անուն էր Յիւսր զօրօք բազմօք, զի երթեալ պատերազմեսցէ ընդ իշխանին:
| 3:32 He sent a eunuch named Yiwsr with a large army to wage battle with the prince:
|
3:33 Եւ քանզի նոքա ամրացեալ էին ի դժուարս Կակենից գեաղջ՝ դառնայ ներքինին մեծաւ ամօթով, ոչ ինչ կարացեալ ստնանել նոցա վասն տեղւոյն ամրութեան եւ զօրացն քաջամարտիկ լինելոյ:
| 3:33 But because they were secure in the village of Kakenk’, which was difficult [of access], the eunuch returned in great shame, having been unable to harm them because of the strength of the site and the valour of their soldiers:
|
3:34 Իսկ ամիրայն այնուհետեւ անց գնաց յԱտրպատական մեծաւ փութով, մնալով երկոցունց ներքինեացն յերկոսին աւանսն, զոր վերագոյնն ասացաք:
| 3:34 After the emir crossed into Atrpatakan with great haste, leaving the two enuchs in the two towns, as we described above:
|
3:35 Եւ ի գալ գարնանւոյն այր մի ներքինի զոր կարգեալ էր ի վերակացութիւն քաղաքին Պարտաւայ, զօրաժողով եղեալ ապստամբի յԱփշնէ. եւ անցեալ գնայ մինչեւ յերկիրն Շամայ:
| 3:35 When spring arrived, a eunuch whom he had appointed to govern the city of Partaw gathered an army, rebelled against Ap’shin, and went as far as the land of Sham:
|
3:36 Եւ զայն լուեալ ամիրայն՝ ակամայ կամօք կոչէ առ ինքն զարսն զորս թողեալ էր տեղապահս Վասպուրական աշխարհին, եւ ինքն աճապարեալ հասանէ ի քաղաքն Պարտաւ:
| 3:36 When the emir heard of this, willy- nilly he summoned to his presence the men whom he had left as deputies in the land of Vaspurakan, while he himself hastened to the city of Partaw:
|
3:37 Անդ պատահեալ վրէժխնդրութեանն զոր ինչ արար չարիս ընդ Հայաստան աշխարհս, որում ոչ ներեալ Աստուծոյ՝ հարկանէ զնա չարաչար կեղով ի ձեռն հրեշտակի սրբոյ, որպէս երբեմն զՎաղէս կայսր ի ձեռն Քրիստոսի քաջ նահատակացն տեսլեամբ Թեկղեայ սրբոյ. զոր ընծայեաց մեզ հաւաստեաւ Բիւզանդն պատմօղ. ուր եւ անդէն իսկ երկուք յորդւոց իւրոց, եւս եւ բազումք ի զօրաց անտի չարամահ սատակեցան առաջի երեսաց նորա, որոց զկնի եւ ինքն չարաչար դառնութեամբ ընդունի զվախճան:
| 3:37 There he met with vengeance for the evils he had inflicted on Armenia. God did not spare him, but smote him with a painful ulcer through a holy angel— as once [he smote] the emperor Valens through the valiant martyrs of Christ by the vision of Saint Thecla, as the historian Biwzand has accurately expounded to us. Here two of his sons and many of his troops suffered painful deaths before his eyes; and after them he too received his end with cruel suffering:

3:38 Յետ այսորիկ խաղաղանայ երկիրս Հայոց ի հինից չարահնար իսմայէլական ազգին:
| 3:38 After this the land of Armenia was at peace from raiders of the malicious race of Ismael:
|
3:39 Աստանօր յիշէ իշխանն Աշոտ զչարաբարոյ արբանեկութիւնն Հասանայ որդւոյ Վասակայ դենադարձի, զոր արար առ ամիրայն Ափշին:
| 3:39 Then Prince Ashot remembered the wicked service that Hasan, son of Vasak the apostate, had rendered the emir Ap’shin:
|
3:40 Եւ արձակեալ զօր պաշարէ զբերդն Սեւան, զոր յափշտակեալ էր Գագկայ որդւոյ Վահանայ եւ տուեալ ի ձեռս Հասանայ, մինչդեռ ի կալանսն էր Աշոտ:
| 3:40 So he despatched a force to besiege the castle of Sevan, which Gagik, son of Vahan, had seized and then given over to Hasan while Ashot was still in prison:
|
3:41 Եւ քանզի աւուրք ձմերանի էին, յորում ոչ գոյր հնար ձիական ասպարիսօք կատարել զհանդէս պատերազմաց՝ գունդ կազմեալ Հասանայ գնայ ի հետիոտս ճակատել ընդ զօրաց իշխանին որ էին ի գեօղն Պղուանս, ի գաւառին Լումբայ կոչեցեալ Փորակ:
| 3:41 Since it was wintertime, when there was no possibility of waging battle with cavalry, Hasan gathered troops and came out on foot to oppose the army of the prince, which was in the village of Płuank’ in the province called Lmbay P’orak:

3:42 Եւ հասեալ ի վերայ ի մէջ գիշերի կարծէր յաղթել, ոչ իմացեալ զիմաստնոյն՝ թէ ոչ յաջողեսցի մարդոյ յանիրաւութենէ:
| 3:42 Attacking them in the middle of the night, he expected to gain the victory, not understanding the [saying] of the sage: “ A man will not succeed by injustice:
|
3:43 Իսկ զօրութիւն վերին խնամոցն ի թիկունս հասեալ օգնականութեան զօրաց իշխանին, թէպէտ եւ նուազունք էին, եւ հարեալ սատակմամբ լքին զգիշերամարտ դասս անկարգ խրոսակին Հասանայ. ուստի եւ առ ի չժուժել ճիւաղեալ պրշակաց տան միոջ, զգոգ առեալ ձեղունն, լինելով նմա անզերծանելի ծուղակ՝ սուզեալ ընկենու զնա ի ձեռս արանց քաջանց. զի կատարեսցի ասացեալն ի մարգարէէն, թէ «զգուբն զոր փորեաց՝ անկցի ի խորխորատն զոր եւ գործեաց:
| 3:43 The power of divine providence came to help the prince’s troops; although they were fewer in number, they severely smote and defeated the nocturnal attack of the undisciplined bandit Hasan. The roof of a house weakened and collapsed, and the ceiling fell in, making an inescapable trap for him and covering him over; so he was delivered into the hands of the brave warriors, that the saying of the prophet might be fulfilled: “ He who dug the pit will fall into the abyss which he made himself:

3:44 Եւ անդէն ձերբակալ արարեալ կրկին կապանօք քարշեն ի դուռն բերդին Սեւան կոչեցեալ. անդ վաղագոյնս աճապարեալ հասանէ ի ձեռն աւետաւոր հրեշտակաց եւ իշխանն Աշոտ եղբարբքն հանդերձ. եւ նստեալ շուրջանակի սակաւ աւուրս՝ ապա փորեցին զաչս Հասանայ եւ առին զամրոցն:
| 3:44 Then he was captured, and dragged in double bonds to the gate of the castle of Sevan, where Prince Ashot with his brothers hastily preceded him, having been informed by messengers. They besieged it for a few days, then put out Hasan’s eyes and took the fortress:

3:45 Աստ ի մէջ կացեալ բազմաջան լինի Գագիկ եղբայր իշխանին՝ թափել զՀասան ի պատուհասից խաւարմանն, եւ ոչ հասանի խնդրոյն. եւ Հասանայ զրկեալ ի զգալի լուսոյն՝ ոգւոցն բացան աչք. եւ իսկոյն կրօնաւորեալ կեայր սրբութեամբ մինչեւ ցօր վախճանի իւրոյ:
| 3:45 Gagik, the prince’s brother, had intervened and made many efforts to save Hasan from the punishment of blinding; but he was not successful. Hasan was deprived of the light of this world, but the eyes of his soul were opened. Straightway he became a monk, and lived a holy life until the day of his death:

3:46 Բայց ամք իշխանութեանն Աշոտոյ ոչ խաղաղացան ըստ կամս իւր, երբեմն յեղբարց իւրոց եւ երբեմն յայլոց բազմաց:
| 3:46 But the years of Ashot’s principality did not run peacefully as he wished, sometimes because of his brothers, sometimes because of many other people:

3:47 Զայսով ժամանակաւ գայ հասանէ Սմբատ թագաւորն Հայոց ի գաւառն Ապահունիս, հարկս պահանջել ի գլխոց Կայսիկն կոչեցեալ ազգէ. եւ նոցա ի դիմի հարեալ զպատերազմի նշանակէն հանդէս:
| 3:47 About that time Smbat, the king of Armenia, arrived in the province of Apahunik’ to demand poll taxes from the tribe called Kaysik. But they resisted, and raised the flag of war:

3:48 Յայնժամ ի թիկունս օգնականութեան կոչէ զիշխանն Աշոտ թագաւորն Սմբատ. եւ նորա յիշեալ զգութ արեան հարազատութեանն՝ գայ հասանէ մեծաւ փութով. եւ ի խմբել պատերազմին՝ փախստական լինի Սմբատ զօրօքն հանդերձ յերեսաց այլազգեացն:
| 3:48 Then King Smbat summoned to his aid Prince Ashot, who, remembering the sympathetic bond of related blood, came in great haste. When battle was joined, Smbat with his army fled from the face of the infidels:

3:49 Աստ ի մէջ կացեալ Աշոտ իշխանն Վասպուրական սակաւ զօրօք, եւ բազում օգնականութեամբ բարձրելոյն պարտէ զթշնամիսն մեծաւ յաղթութեամբ, եւ ինքն դարձեալ երթայ ի քաղաքն Նախճաւան, զոր ընդ իւրումն կարգեալ էր իշխանութեամբ. եւ անկեալ յախտ հիւանդութեան մահու՝ փոխի յաշխարհէս ամաց [ԻԹ] իբրեւ:
| 3:49 Then Ashot, prince of Vaspurakan, intervened with a few troops, and with much help from on high, inflicted a great defeat on the enemy. He returned to the city of Nakhchavan which he had put under his own control. But falling prey to a mortal illness, he departed this world aged about twenty- nine:
