4:0 Թէ ո՛րպիսի պատճառաւ հասին ոմանք ի նոցանէ սուրբ կատարմանն:
| 4:0 For what cause some of them attained holy martyrdom:
|
4:1 Նահատակք ոմանք կային յայնժամ ելեալ յարգելանէն ընդ կալանաւորսն, եւ դեռ զիւրաքանչիւր սուսեր ածեալ ունէին ընդ մէջ իւր եւ վահան ի վերայ թիկանց եդեալ. ամբարձին զաչս իւրեանց եւ տեսին, զի զկանայս եւ զմանկունս իւրեանց տեսին ընդ աշխարհական գերիսն:
| 4:1 Some heroes among the prisoners at that time had emerged from prison, were still girt with their swords, and had their shields on their backs. Raising their eyes, they saw their wives and children had been brought among the lay captives:

4:2 Եւ առ չժուժեալ այնպիսի վտանգաւոր նեղութեանն, արիաբար հասեալ ի կիրճս ձորոյն եւ մերկացեալ զսուսերն՝ յարձակեցան ի վերայ երիվարացն. եւ Տէր մատնեաց զնոսա ի ձեռս նոցա, յորոց վերայ սուր եդեալ զբազումս սպանին եւ զեւս բազումս վիրաւորեցին եւ զյոլովագոյնսն ի գերելոցն հանդերձ ընտանիւք իւրեանց զերծին ի նոցանէ եւ անցուցին ընդ պահակ ձորոյն յամրական կողմանս լերին:
| 4:2 Unable to endure such oppressive affliction, they valiantly gained the pass of the valley and drawing their swords, rushed on the captors, whom the Lord delivered into their hands. Attacking them with the sword, many they killed and even more they wounded, while all the captives and their families they rescued from them and brought through the pass of the valley to the secure regions of the mountain:

4:3 Իսկ զօրքն Տաճկաց գումարեալ ի վերայ նոցա, շուրջ փակեալ, ձերբակալ արարեալ ածին առ զօրավարն եւ պատմեցին նմա՝ զոր ինչ գործեցին զիրս քաջութեանն:
| 4:3 But the Muslim troops gathered to attack them; surrounding and capturing them, they brought them to the general and told him what deeds of valour they had accomplished:

4:4 Զոր առեալ զարսն ստիպեաց ի բաց կալ յերկրպագութենէն Քրիստոսի, եւ պատուի եւ պարգեւաց արժանի լինել ի նմանէ, եւ մի չարաչար տանջանօք մեռանել:
| 4:4 When they led them before him, he urged them to abandon the worship of Christ, [saying] they were worthy to receive honour and gifts from him rather than to be put to death with cruel torments:
|
4:5 Նոցա գեղեցիկ խորհուրդ ի մէջ առեալ՝ ընտրեցին զմահ քաջութեան, քան զկեանս խղճիւ:
| 4:5 But reaching a noble decision, they preferred a valiant death to life with remorse:
|
4:6 Խօսեցաւ ընդ նոսա բանիւք ողոքանօք, եւ ոչ լուան նմա. ետ բերել պարգեւս, եւ այնպէս ոչ առին յանձն. խօսեցաւ ընդ նոսա խստութեամբ, սակայն եւ յայնմանէ ոչ երկեան. տանջեաց զնոսա գանիւ, եւ նոքա եւս առաւել պնդեցան ի հաւատսն եւ ի յոյս բարեաց եւ ի սէրն Քրիստոսի:
| 4:6 He spoke to them with cajoling words, but they would not listen to him. He had gifts brought, but even so they would not agree. He spoke with them in a severe fashion, but of that too they were not afraid. He tormented them with the bastinado, but they were even more confirmed in their faith, in the hope of blessings and in the love of Christ:

4:7 Այնուհետեւ հրաման ետ սրով բառնալ զգլուխս նոցա. եւ նոքա յոյժ ուրախ եղեն, զի վասն անուանն Տեառն արժանի եղեն մեռանել. եւ ընկալան զվճիռ մարտիրոսական եւ կատարեցան վկայութեամբ ի փառս սուրբ Երրորդութեանն, որոց անուանք ճանաչին, միոյն Գէորգ յԱկեցի տոհմէ, եւ միւսոյն Խոսրով ի Գաբաելեան տոհմէ:
| 4:7 Then he commanded their heads to be cut off by the sword, and they greatly rejoiced that they had become worthy to die for the name of the Lord. So, they received the sentence of martyrdom and died as martyrs for the glory of the Holy Trinity. Their names are: of the first, Gēorg from the Akēts’i family; and of the other, Khosrov from the Gabełean family:

4:8 Բայց երիցս երանելի ոմն երիտասարդ հասակաւ, ինքն տաճիկ եւ ազգաւ պարսիկ՝ ելեալ զհետ սիրոյն Քրիստոսի հաւատոցն եկն յարեցաւ ի Պատրիկն Անձեւացի, եւ խնդրէր առնուլ զտէրունական կնիքն, զի կատարեալ լիցի ի գործս պատուիրանաց Տեառն, եւ յապաղեալ խափան լինէր նմա յօժարութիւն ցանկութեան բարեպաշտութեանն:
| 4:8 Now a thrice- blessed young man, himself a Muslim and a Persian by race who pursued the love of Christ’s faith, came and attached himself to the patrik Andzevats’i, asking to receive the Lord’s seal in order to become perfect in working the Lord’s commandments. But he [the patrik] had deferred and hindered his eager desire for piety:

4:9 եւ էր մտեալ սա ընդ արգելականսն ի բերդն, եւ ի ժամուն յայնմիկ մինչ առաւ ամրոցն եւ զըմբռնեալսն ստիպէին, զի որք ի բաց կացցեն ի Քրիստոսէ՝ եւ մի մեռցին, եւ բազումք դրդուեցան եւ ելին զկնի սատանայի, եւ կէսք ընկալան զճգնութիւն մահու՝ դիմեալ գայր եւ սա ընդ աջաթեւ կողմն վկայելոցն, ընդդէմ սրոյն մատուցանել զինքն պատարագ կենդանի Որդւոյն Աստուծոյ:
| 4:9 The Muslim had entered the fortress with the prisoners; and at the time when it was taken, they had urged the captives to abandon Christ and not be put to death. Many had been swayed and turned to Satan, while some suffered the rigor of death. But he rushed to the righthand side of the martyrs, to offer himself to the sword as a living sacrifice to the Son of God:

4:10 Իսկ Վահրամ տեսանէր զնա մերձ առ սպանդանոցն. այն ինչ սուր ի վերայ բերեալ դահճին՝ ձայնէ բարձր եւ ասէ, «դու, մսլիմանակ, ընդէ՞ր մեռանիս զուր եւ տարապարտուց». եւ նորա ճիչ բարձեալ ասէ, քրիստոնեայ եմ. եւ նա եւս պնդէր եւ ասէր, «մի՛ մեռանիր, մսլիմանակ ես». եւ նա առաւել յորդորագոյն հնչէր եւ արտօսր ի վեր բերեալ հեղոյր, ասէ, «Քրիստոնեայ եմ, եւ մեռանիմ վասն Քրիստոսի, եւ մկրտիմ ի Հայր եւ ի յՈրդի եւ ի Հոգին Սուրբ, ոչ ջրով, այլ իմով արեամբ:
| 4:10 When Vahram saw him about to be slaughtered as the executioner was holding the sword above him, he cried out loudly: “ Oh Muslim, why are you dying in vain and to no purpose?” But he shouted: “ I am a Christian.” But [Vahram] persisted and said: “ Do not die, you are a Muslim.” But he even more readily cried out, weeping tears: “ I am a Christian, and I die for Christ. I am baptised in [the name of] the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, not by water but by my own blood:

4:11 Ո՞չ ապաքէն դու իսկ տեսանէիր, զի մտանէի եւ ելանէի ի սուրբ եկեղեցին ընդ ամենայն հաւատացեալսն, եւ դու ջանաս մոլորեցուցանել զիս ի հաւատէն Քրիստոսի:
| 4:11 Did you not see me coming and entering the holy church with all the believers, while you tried to turn me away from faith in Christ:
|
4:12 Ես իսկ լուայ յորժամ կարդային զԱւետարանն, թէ ասաց Քրիստոս, «որ «խոստովանեսցի զիս առաջի մարդկան՝ խոստովանեցայց եւ ես «զնա առաջի Հօր իմոյ որ յերկինս է». արդ ի բաց գնա, այր դու, ես մեռանիմ վասն Քրիստոսի:
| 4:12 But I heard, when they were reading the gospel, that Christ said: ‘ Who will confess me before men, him shall I too acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. ’ So, go away, man, I am dying for Christ:
|
4:13 Եւ վազէր ընդ բանակն, կանչէր, հնչէր, շարժէր զձեռնն եւ ասէր, «ես Քրիստոնեայ եմ, Քրիստոնեայ եմ», մինչեւ զայրանալ դահճացն, եւ խուռն ի վերայ դիմեալ ի մեծ հրապարակին՝ հարին սրով զերանելին եւ ի բաց առին զգլուխ նորա, եւ անցեալ պատմեցին զօրավարին:
| 4:13 And he ran through the camp, shouting, crying out, and waving his hands, saying: “ I am a Christian, I am a Christian,” until the executioners, enraged, fell on him pell- mell in the great square. Striking the blessed one with the sword, they cut off his head and went to inform the general:

4:14 Եւ ահա լոյս սաստիկ իջեալ յերկնից եւ ցոլացեալ ի վերայ սուրբ մարմնոյն, եւ շուրջ փակեալ զտեղեաւն, թէ ուրեք յարենէ նորա ցայտեալ կայր:
| 4:14 Then behold a bright light descended from heaven and shone over his holy body, surrounding the place wherever his blood had spattered:
|
4:15 Եւ տեսին առ հասարակ ամենայն բազմութիւն կարաւանին:
| 4:15 And the whole host of the army saw it:
|
4:16 Առ սա ինձ թուեցաւ ասացեալն ի մարգարէէն, «մի ասիցէ այլազգին, որ եկեալ յեցեալ իցէ ի Տէր՝ եթէ մերժելով մերժէ զիս Տէր ի ժողովրդենէ իւրմէ». եւ զկնի ինչ փոքու ասէ, «զայլազգիսն որ եկեալ յեցեալ իցեն ի Տէր՝ սիրել զանուն նորա, լինել նմա ի ծառայս եւ յաղախնայս, եւ ամենեքեան որ պահիցեն զշաբաթս իմ եւ ոչ պղծիցեն, եւ պահիցեն զպատուիրանս իմ եւ կացցեն յուխտին իմում՝ տարայց զնոսա ի լեառն սրբութեան իմոյ եւ ուրախ արարից զնոսա ի տան աղօթից իմոց. ողջակէզք նոցա եւ պատարագք նոցա ընդունելի լիցին ի վերայ սեղանոյ իմոյ, զի տուն իմ տուն աղօթից կոչեսցին ամենայն հեթանոսաց, ասաց Տէր ամենակալ:
| 4:16 To this, it seemed to me, refers the saying of the prophet: “ Let the foreigner who will come to rely on the Lord not say that the Lord separates me from his people.” A little later he says: “ As for the foreigners who will come and rely on the Lord, to love his name and be servants and handmaidens to him, and all those who will keep my sabbaths and not profane them, and who will keep my commandments and remain in my covenant— I shall lead them to my holy hill and shall make them rejoice in the house of my prayers. Their holocausts and their offerings will be acceptable on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the heathen, said the Lord omnipotent:

4:17 Եւ դարձեալ նոյնպէս Փրկիչն ասաց, «են ոչխարք իմ, որ ոչ են յայսմ գաւթէ, եւ զայն եւս պարտ է ինձ ածել այսր, եւ ձայնի իմում լուիցեն եւ եղիցին մի հօտ եւ մի հովիւ. եւ ես տամ նոցա զկեանսն յաւիտենից:
| 4:17 Furthermore, the Saviour said likewise: “ They are my sheep who are not from this fold; and them too must I lead hither. And they will hear my voice and become one flock and one shepherd. And I shall give them eternal life:
|
4:18 Եւ կատարեցաւ սուրբ վկայն փառաւորապէս ի Հայր եւ յՈրդի եւ ի Հոգին սուրբ, որոյ անունն գրեալ է ի դպրութեան կենաց:
| 4:18 So, the holy martyr was killed gloriously for the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. His name is written in the book of life:
|
4:19 Իսկ առ մեզ ծանուցեալ զոր ինքն ասաց, թէ Քրիստոնեայ եմ, ըստ այնմ թէ «ծառայի իմոյ կոչեսցի անուն նոր, որ օրհնեսցի վերայ երկրի»՝ գրեցաւ յիշատակարանս սրբոյն:
| 4:19 But to us he is known for his saying: “ I am a Christian” according to the Scripture: “ A new name shall be given to my servant, who will be blessed on earth:
|
4:20 Զկնի այսորիկ մեկնեալ Բուխայ յինքենէ արս զօրաւորս յամենայն ազգաց եւ յամենայն մեծամեծաց եւ յամենայն աշխարհակալաց, եւ ի Պարսից եւ յԵլիմացւոց եւ ի Բաբելացւոց եւ յԱրաբացւոց, որ էին ընդ նմա եկեալ ի գործ պատերազմաց ըստ հրամանի թագաւորին եւ մեծ զօրավարին, արս աւելի քան [ԺԵՌ-աց] եւ եհան զնոսա զհետ Գուրգինայ, զի ուր եւ իցէ՝ ածցեն զնա առ նա, թէ՛ պատիր խաբեութեամբ եւ խորամանկ կեղծաւորութեամբ եւ խարդախութեամբ, կամ պատերազմաւ եւ մեծամեծ զօրութեամբ, ամենայն պատրաստութեամբ, արքունի կարողութեամբ, որպէս զիարդ եւ կարասցեն՝ առ նա հասուցանեն:
| 4:20 This was written as a memorial for the saint.
After this Bugha despatched soldiers of all nations, from among all magnates and all governors, Persians, Elamites, Babylonians, and Arabs, who had come with him to wage war at the command of the caliph and the great general, more than fifteen thousand men. He sent them in pursuit of Gurgēn, that wherever he might be they were to bring him to him, be it by deceitful trickery and cunning fraud and falsity, or by war and strength of arms, with all vigilance and by royal power— however they might be able they were to bring him to him:

4:21 Իսկ նա անցեալ ի գաւառն Որսիրանից, եւ ընդ նմա բազմութիւն ազատաց եւ մեծամեծացն Արծրունեաց նախարարութեանց եւ ամենայն զօրաց նոցա, եւ բանակեալ կային ի լերինն որ ի վերայ գեղջն Թուայ, ի հովիտս նորա, որ կոչի Արեան լիճ. զի անդ է լիճ մի մեծ մօտ ի տեղին, որ էր տեղի ասպարիսի ճակատամարտ զօրու նահատակութեան քաջացն մերոց իշխանացն Վասպուրականի, եւ անդ լինէին ժողովեալ ամենայն բազմութիւն աշխարհակոյտ ամբոխից գաղթականաց գաւառացն կողմանցն Աղբակոյ, Զարէհվանի եւ Ակէոյ եւ ի լեռնակողմանցն Աղզոյ եւ Ոտնն Առնոյ, մի կողմն ի Ջողայ լեռնէն եւ անդր:
| 4:21 But he [Gurgēn] crossed to the province of Orsirank’ accompanied by a host of nobles and magnates from the Artsruni principalities and all their troops. They encamped on the mountain above the village of T’uay, in its valley called Lake of Blood. For there is a great lake there near the place which was the site of the battlefield where our valiant princes of Vaspurakan were martyred. There gathered all the multitude of the numerous crowd of refugees from the provinces of Ałbag, Zarehvan, and Akē, and from the mountainous regions of Ałz and Aṙnoy- otn, one side of the mountain of Joł and the other:

4:22 Եւ էին անհուն բազմութիւնն մածեալ շուրջ զլերամբն իբրեւ զմարախ եւ իբրեւ զաւազ ծովու առանց թուոյ. իբրեւ ի մեծ եւ յանկասկածելի ամուր ապաւինեալ լինէին ի քաջ զօրավարն Գուրգէն եւ որք ընդ նմա զօրք Հայոց. եւ առաքեալ էր զմայր իւր զբամբիշն Վասպուրականի առ զօրավարն Բուխայ, զի յայնմհետէ կալցի խաղաղութիւն ինքն եւ աշխարհ իւր, եւ տացէ ի ձեռս նորա զիշխանութիւնն Վասպուրականի փոխանակ եղբօր իւրոյ, եւ կացցէ ինքն եւ իւրքն ամենեքեան ի հնազանդութեան արքունի, ի հարկս եւ ի հասս չափոյ սակի արքունական աւանդութեանց:
| 4:22 They were an immense multitude swarming around the mountain like locusts or the numberless sand of the sea. As in a great and impregnable fortress they had taken refuge in the valiant general Gurgēn and the Armenian troops with him. He had sent his mother, the princess of Vaspurakan, to the general Bugha so that henceforth he and his land might have peace: he would deliver into his hands the principality of Vaspurakan in exchange for his brother, while he and all his would render submission to the caliph, paying the traditional amount of royal tribute:

4:23 Իսկ իբրեւ եմուտ տիկինն ի բանակն եւ եկաց առաջի զօրավարին՝ խօսեցաւ ընդ նմա ըստ պատշաճի իրացն յոր պէտս չոգան:
| 4:23 When the princess had entered the camp and come before the general, she spoke with him politely in appropriate terms about the matter on which they had come:
|
4:24 Ետ պատասխանի նմա զօրավարն ի խաղաղութիւն, եւ ասէ, «նիստ դու աստ, մինչեւ արձակեցից զքեզ եւ արարից զկամս հայցուածոց քոց վասն որոյ եկեալ ես:
| 4:24 The general responded to her peaceably, saying: “ Remain here until I dismiss you and fulfill the desire of your requests for which you have come:
|
4:25 Եւ հրամայեաց պահել զնա յընդարձակի, եւ կարգեաց նմա ռոճիկս օր ըստ օրէ ըստ արժանի մեծ տիկնոջն Հռիփսիմեայ:
| 4:25 He ordered her to be left at liberty and arranged for her a daily allowance worthy of the great lady Hṙip’simē:
|
4:26 Եւ զօրքն, որ ելեալ էին զհետ Գուրգինայ՝ եկին հասին ի սահմանս երկրին, ուր կայր Գուրգէն զօրօքն իւրովք, եւ բնակեցան յեզր գետոյն Զաւ կոչեցեալ:
| 4:26 The troops who had pursued Gurgēn reached the borders of the land where Gurgēn and his army were, and camped on the bank of the river called Zav:
|
4:27 Եւ զօրագլուխք զօրացն էին այսոքիկ, Մուքադմ, Յուսփ ի Թփղիս քաղաքէ, Յուսփ որդի Ռահմայ եւ Ապուհեշմ Ելոյ տէր եւ ընդ նոսա զօրք Համդոյի Պարսից ամիրայի:
| 4:27 The generals of those troops were the following: Muk’adam, Yusp’ from the city of Tiflis, Yusp’ son of Raham, and Abuheshm, lord of El; with them was the army of Hamdoy, emir of Persia:

4:28 Յղեն առ Գուրգէն դեսպանս, զի եկեսցէ առ նոսա առանց պատկառանաց եւ երկիւղի եւ առանց միոյ իւիք կասկածանաց, միայն զի պատահեսցեն միմեանց սիրով խաղաղութեան, եւ պարգեւօք պատուեալ ի նոցանէ ըստ հրամանի զօրավարին՝ եւ տիրեսցէ փոխանակ եղբօր իւրոյ բոլոր աշխարհի իւրոյ:
| 4:28 They sent messengers to Gurgēn [asking him] to come to them without hesitation or fear and without any suspicion; that they should merely meet each other in peaceable friendliness; he would be honoured by them with gifts at the general’s orders, and he would rule in his brother’s stead over his entire territory:

4:29 Իսկ նորա յղեալ առ նոսա դեսպան զԱբդլայ ոմն, որ ծանօթ էր զօրավարին, տեսանել թէ իցէ՞ հաւատարիմ զոր ինչ խօսին ի ձեռն դեսպանաց, թէ պատիր խաբէութեամբ ջանան կորուսանեն զնա:
| 4:29 But he sent as messenger to them a certain Abdlay who was known to the general, to see if they were making trustworthy proposals through the messengers or whether they were trying to destroy him by deceitful trickery:
|
4:30 Իսկ նոցա ոչ յայտնեալ զխորհուրդ չարութեանն՝ դարձուցանեն զնա անդրէն, զի մի յերկբայս եղիցի գալ առ նոսա. եւ երկից եւ երից եւ բազում անգամ զնոյն հաստատեցին երդմամբ, զի անվեհեր համարձակութեամբ եկեսցէ առ նոսա. եւ ինքեանք զզօրսն ամենայն մեկնեցին երթալ ի վերայ գնդին Հայոց, եւ ասեն. «ահա մեկնեցաք ի մէնջ զզօրսն, եւ սակաւք են առ մեզ, եւ դու նոյնպէս սակաւուք եկ, կամ թէ եւս աւելի արամբք, եւ տեսցուք զմիմեանս:
| 4:30 However, they did not reveal their wicked plot and sent him back to say that he [Gurgēn] should come to them without any hesitation. Two, three, and even more times they confirmed the same thing with oaths, that he should come to them fearlessly and boldly. They themselves sent all their troops off and came up to the Armenian force saying: “ Behold, we have sent away from us our troops and there are but few with us. Do you likewise come with only a few men, more or less, and let us see each other:

4:31 Յայնժամ ետ զզօրսն ի ձեռն Մուշեղի Ապուպելճի եղբօր Գուրգինայ, եւ ինքն ել գնաց զհետ եկելոց կոչնականացն. եւ յարգելուլ զնա մեծամեծաց նախարարացն՝ չանսաց բնաւ ումեք, եւ ամենեքեան միաբան յարտասուս եղեալ լային. եւ մինչչեւ հասեալ առ զօրագլուխսն, այլ ի բացեայ երթայր հեռագոյն ի նոցանէ իբրեւ յերկու մղոնս՝ նոցա ի մտի եդեալ էր, զի թէ գայցէ զհետ կոչնականացն՝ կալցուք զնա եւ զօրքն նորա լքանիցին, եւ դիւրաւ յաղթեսցուք նոցա:
| 4:31 Then he entrusted his forces to Musheł [son of] Apupelch, brother of Gurgēn, and went himself to follow the messengers who had brought the invitation. When the greatest nobles restrained him he would heed no one, so they all burst into tears and wept. Before he reached the [enemy] generals but was still at a distance of about two miles from them, they had decided that if he were to follow the messengers “ we shall seize him, his troops will be discouraged, and we shall easily defeat them:

4:32 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ երրորդ ժամ լինէր աւուրն, որ էր միաշաբաթի՝ եւ ահա ելանէին գունդք հեծելոցն ընդ կողմն անապատին Սմբատայ կոչեցեալ բերդին, զի էր աւերեալ առ նախնեօքն ի զօրացն Պարսից:
| 4:32 When it was about the third hour of the day, on a Sunday, behold, detachments of cavalry advanced in the direction of the ruin called Smbat’s castle, for it had been destroyed in previous times by the Persian army:
|
4:33 Եւ դրօշք փողփողեալ ըստ միոյ միոյ գնդի, եւ լցեալ էր լեառնն բազմութեամբ զօրացն, եւ կարաւան գաղթականին տեսանէր զփայլիւն զինուցն եւ զշողալ սուսերացն, եւ այսր եւ անդր խուճապական լեալ հալածեալս, իբրեւ զոչխարս ի գայլոց:
| 4:33 The flags of each group glittered in the sun; the mountain was filled with a multitude of soldiers; and the army of the fugitives saw the gleaming of armour, the sparkle of swords, and here and there men fleeing in terror like sheep from wolves:
|
4:34 Եւ զօրուն ազդ լինէր վասն իրացն, լսէին եւ նոքա, զի ձայն զօրու է եւ սաստիկք յոյժ:
| 4:34 The troops were informed of the action, and they obeyed, for the voices of the army [commanders] were very loud:
|
4:35 Եւ հնչեաց երկիրն, եւ զաղաղակ բարձին ամենայն բազմութիւնն, իբրեւ այն թէ ի հիմանց լեառնն տապալիցի:
| 4:35 The earth resounded as the whole host raised a shout, as if the mountain would collapse from its foundations:
|
4:36 Եւ էր ահեղ որոտումն եւ արհաւիրք եւ թնդիւնք. եւ ի սաստիկ փայլմանէ զինուցն եւ սուսերացն շողալոյ, եւ ի փայլիւնն սպառազէն երիվարացն վառելոցն՝ զկարծիս բերէր զհրոյ վառեալ լերինն, կամ թէ յամպոց ինչ ճայթիւն արձակելոյ եւ ի վայր հրաձգութիւնն արկանէ ի կարկտաբեր եւ յանձրեւաբեր ժամանակի, այնպէս թուէր ի խխնջել երիվարացն եւ յերադ ի վերայ դիմելոցն:
| 4:36 There was an awesome thundering, shocks, and echoes. From the bright shining of the arms and glittering of the swords, from the glinting of the fully armed horses, the mountain seemed to be burning with fire. Or it was as if some thunderbolt, loosed from the clouds, was casting down flames as at the time of hail and rain. Such was the impression from the neighing of the horses and their rapid attack:

4:37 Եւ զօրքն Հայոց կային դեռ յանհոգս, եւ պաշտօն աւուրն ի գլուխ ելեալ, ընթերցան քահանայքն զսուրբ Աւետարանն ի տեղիս տեղիս ի բանակին, եւ կատարեալ զաղօթսն եւ գոհացեալ՝ ետուն զփառս Աստուծոյ եւ հատուցին զամէնն եւ նստան ուտել հաց. բայց միայն տէր Ապումկդէմ եւ որք ընդ նմա պահէին զպահպանութիւն գիշերոյն եւ դիտէին զդիտաւորութիւն զօրացն, եւ դեռ եւս հեծեալ կայր ի նիւս երիվարին, փութացան ի բանակն. եւ հրաման ետ զինել վառել ի զէն եւ ի զարդ եւ ի սուր, եւ զընտիրս երիվարացն յիւրեանց զէնսն պատրաստել:
| 4:37 The Armenian army still remained unconcerned. The service of the day came to an end, the priests read the holy gospel in every part of the camp, and when they had finished their prayers and said blessings, they gave glory to God and said “ Amen.” Then they sat down to eat bread. Only Lord Apumkdēm and his entourage kept watch by night and observed the intention of the [enemy] army. He was still on horseback when they rushed on the camp. He commanded [everyohe] to arm and equip themselves with swords and to prepare the armour of their elite horses:

| 4:38 He himself anxiously made haste to marshal the [Armenian] forces, to form line, and prepare for battle. His groom brought him his best horse; mounting, he rushed off after Gurgēn. On coming near he uncovered his sword, helmet, and cuirass which he had put on, and shouted at him so that perhaps at the sound of his voice, the shining of his armour, the gleaming of his sword, the neighing of his valiant steed, and his rapid gallop, he might be warned, turn at the noise, and be saved from the destructive course on which he was bent that would cast him into the teeth of those bloodthirsty beasts:

4:39 Եւ եղեւ զի ամբարձ զաչս իւր եւ ետես, զի պնդեալ գայր հեծեալն զկնի նորա, եւ ծանեաւ թէ գուժկան ոք է, զի սուսեր մերկ ի ձեռին ունի, եւ միայն առանձին գայ զհետ մեր, եւ դարձոյց զերեսանակ երիվարին ընդդէմ նորա, եւ հասեալ ընդդէմ միմեանց՝ դարձան հասին ի բանակն իւրեանց:
| 4:39 It happened that he [Gurgēn] raised his eyes, saw the rider bearing down on him, and realised that it was a messenger of grievous news; “ for he has a naked sword in his hand and pursues us all by himself.” He turned his horse’s bridle towards him [Apumkdēm], and after encountering each other they returned to their camp:

4:41 Եւ զօրացն քաջալերեալ ընթացան յիւրաքանչիւր զէնսն, եւ հեծեալ յընտիրս երիվարացն՝ կացին ի հանդիպոջ եւ հանդիսացան գումարեցան ի մի վայր եւ պնդեցան կարգեցան մածեան հոլովեցան յինքեանս, եւ եղեն իբրեւ զմի այր կամ թէ իբրեւ զվէմ մի բլրաձեւ, արձանացան կարծրացան պնդութեամբ՝ անմատոյց լինել ի նոսա զօրութիւն երկաթի:
| 4:41 The troops, taking courage, ran each to his arms; mounting their elite horses, they came forward and stood gathered in one spot, forming a solid compact mass, a single man as it were, or a high rock. They stood firm and solid, having the impenetrable strength of iron:

4:42 եւ իբրեւ զպարիսպ անդամանդեայ՝ այնպէս եդին զանձինս ի վերայ բազմութեան գաղթականին աշխարհակոյտ ամբոխիցն, իբրեւ զքաջ հովիւ ի վերայ խաշանց մեռանել յանձն առին:
| 4:42 Like a wall of adamant, so they set themselves as protection for the vast number of fugitives, ready to die like a brave shepherd for his sheep:

4:43 Եւ մինչ նոքա դեռ չեւ հասեալ էին մերձ առ գունդն Հայոց՝ փութացաւ զօրավարն Գուրգէն յղեաց դեսպանս առ Ապուհեշմ եւ որ ընդ նմա զօրագլուխքն՝ աղաչել ի խաղաղութիւն, մինչեւ եկեսցէ նմա պատասխանի ի բուն զօրավարէն, եւ ոչ լուան աղաչելութեան նորա. խոստացաւ տալ նոցա գանձս, գեօղս եւ ագարակս, գրել կնքել եւ կացուցանել նոցա վկայս, սակայն եւ յայնմ ոչ ետուն հրաման զօրուն մի ելանել ի պատերազմ:
| 4:43 Before they had yet reached the Armenian force, the general Gurgēn made haste to send messengers to Apuheshm and the commanders with him to beg for peace until a response from the general- in- chief should reach him. But they did not heed his request. Although he promised to give them treasures, villages, and farms, sealed in writing and confirmed by witnesses, yet despite this they did not command their army not to go out to battle:

4:44 Յայնժամ իբրեւ գիտաց զօրավարն Հայոց եւ ոչ միով իւիք կարաց հաճել զմիտս նոցա, այլ միաբան ետուն հրաման ելանել ի պատերազմ՝ եւ հրաման ետ Գուրգէն իւրում գնդին պատրաստել ի պատերազմ, կազմել ռազմ եւ տալ ճակատ ընդդէմ այլազգեացն, եւ ինքն ամբարձ զձեռս իւր յերկինս, յորդառատ արտասուօք եկաց յաղօթս, ասելով զերեսուն եւ չորրորդ սաղմոսն եւ զութսուն երկու, եւ ահա այլազգիքն հասին ի դիմի գրգռել զմարտն եւ զօրագլուխք փութացան զհետ զօրուն:
| 4:44 When the Armenian commander realised that he was unable by any means to appease them but that they had given a general order to go out to battle, then Gurgēn ordered his own force to prepare, to form ranks and a line against the Muslims. He himself raised his hands to heaven, and praying with copious tears repeated the Thirty- fourth and Sixty- second Psalms. At that moment the Muslims attacked and joined battle, [their] captains rushing after the army:

The deacons offered benedictions, while the priests raised up the holy gospel and their banner— the holy cross. The ministers completed the Lord’s service and the choir sang the [song] of victory over Pharaoh: “ The Lord crushes battles; the Lord is his name:

4:57 Եւ այլք զցաւղածին օրհնութիւն հնոցին երգէին, ի վերուստ կոչել զօրավիգն զհրեշտակ Աստուծոյ, եւ ռամիկքն ամբոխին ոմանք ի կողմանէ մխեցին զձեռս ի գործ պատերազմին քարամբք:
| 4:57 Others sang the benediction of the dew born [in] the furnace to summon the angel of God to their aid. As for the mass of the common people, some set their hands to battle with stones:

4:58 Եւ դիմեցին խուռն յանդուգն յարձակմամբ եւ բախեցին զգունդն եւ պատառեցին զռազմն եւ դարձուցին զայլազգիսն. եւ գոչէին վիշապաձայն եւ բեկանէին առիւծաբար եւ հարկանէին վարազաբար, եւ մատնեցին ի սատակումն եւ ի պարտութիւն, եւ իւրաքանչիւր այր զախոյեան իւր յերկիր հարեալ՝ եւ ինքն զկնի միւսոյն ճեպէր:
| 4:58 With a resolute assault they joined battle. They crashed into the Muslims’ force, broke their ranks, and turned them. Roaring like dragons, they struck like lions and smote like wild boars; they delivered [the enemy] to massacre and defeat, each striking his opponent to the ground and rushing after another:

4:59 Եւ ի սաստիկ բախմանէ խուռն նիզակացն եւ ի զինուց փայլելոյ եւ շողալոյ սուսերացն եւ սրնգելոյ աղեղանցն լարելոյ՝ հրաձգութիւն իմն արտաքս ելանէր իբրեւ յամպոյ ճայթմանէ, եւ լեառնն իբրեւ ի հրոյ վառեալ երեւէր:
| 4:59 From the tremendous shock of mingled lances, from the shining of the armour and glinting of the swords and whistling of the bowstrings it seemed as if fire was shooting out like lightning from clouds, and the mountain appeared to be aflame:

4:60 Եւ յերկարեցան գործ պատերազմին մինչ ի տասներորդ ժամ աւուրն, եւ հարին ի հարուածս մեծամեծս զայլազգիսն. եւ եղեւ թիւ սպանելոցն [ՌՊ], թող զբազում վիրաւորսն զկողոպուտն եւ զձերբակալսն:
| 4:60 The battle continued until the tenth hour of the day. They inflicted terrible losses on the Muslims; the number of the killed was eighteen hundred, not including the many wounded, those disarmed, and the prisoners:

4:61 Ձեռնամուխ եղեն ի գործ պատերազմին եւ քահանայքն, որ կային ի բազմութեան գաղթականին, զի հոգեւոր էր պատերազմն եւ ոչ մարմնաւոր, եւ ի վերայ սուրբ եկեղեցեաց եւ ժողովրդեան Աստուծոյ պատերազմէին:
| 4:61 Even the priests among the multitude of fugitives took part in the battle, for it was a spiritual battle and not a physical one; they were fighting for the holy churches and the people of God:

4:62 Հարին հալածեցին եւ ի փախուստ դարձուցին զզօրսն. եւ կէսքն զհետ մտեալ փախստէիցն, մինչ թանձրացաւ մութ գիշերին՝ հանին ի սահմանացն Հայոց, էր որ ի կողմն Ելոյ եւ էր որ ի կողմն Ատրպատականի եւ Պարսից:
| 4:62 They struck the [enemy] troops, turned them, and put them to flight. Some [of the Armenians] pursued the fugitives until the night had become quite dark. They expelled them from Armenian territory, some in the direction of El and others in the direction of Atrpatakan and Persia:

4:63 Բայց Աշխէ ոմն, որ եկեալ էր ընդ զօրսն արքունի ի Գարդայ Պարսիցն՝ ոչ եմուտ ընդ նոսա ձեռնամուխ լինել ընդ նոսա ի գործ պատերազմին, այլ կայր ի բացեայ իբրեւ հազարօք երկուք, եւ իբրեւ հարան զօրքն՝ մտրակ ի կուշտ արարեալ երիվարացն՝ նախ նոքա փախեան: Եւ դարձան առնել դիակապուտ:
| 4:63 A certain Ashkhē who had come with the royal army from Gard in Persia did not join in the battle with them to be captured but remained aside with about two thousand men. When the army was defeated, they spurred their horses and were the first to flee. Then they [the Armenians] returned to plunder the dead:

4:64 Բայց ոչ միայն քաջքն Հայոց նահատակեցան ի մեծ պատերազմին այլ եւ անմարմին զօրք երկնաւորք մարտակից եղեն գնդին Հայոց. զի մինչ խռնեցաւ պատերազմն եւ դէմ առ դէմ ճակատէին՝ յանկարծակի այր մի ի նմանութիւն լուսոյ եկն եկաց ի մէջ ռազմի ճակատուն, արկեալ զիւրեւ պատմուճան լուսակիզն փայլեալ իբրեւ զարուսեակ, եւ յաջոյ ձեռինն ունէր սուսեր, եւ ի ձախոյն՝ բուրուառ լի խնկով:
| 4:64 But not only the valiant Armenian heroes fought in that great battle; there were also incorporeal, heavenly hosts fighting with the Armenian army. For when battle was joined and the lines faced each other, suddenly a man in the likeness of light came and stood in the ranks. He wore around himself a garment of blazing light, shining like the morning star. In his right hand he had a sword and in his left a censer full of incense:

4:65 եւ ինքն կայր հեծեալ ի վերայ սպիտակ ձիոյ, եւ ցանէր զծուխն ընդդէմ թշնամեացն, եւ օդ քաղցր, որ արկանէր զծուխն զերեսօք նոցա. եւ ի սաստկանալ ծխոյն զօրանային գունդքն Հայոց, եւ ի նուազելն փոքր մի ոգի առնուին ի թշնամեացն:
| 4:65 He was mounted on a white horse and fanned the smoke towards the enemy. There was a sweet smell as he wafted the smoke around their faces. As the smoke grew thicker the Armenians took strength, and when it lessened they had a little respite from the enemy:
