1:1 Տուեալ եղեւ նմա ի տեառնէ եւ այլ եւս որդի մի, զոր անուանէ յանուն հօրեղբօր իւրոյ Գուրգէն:
| 1:1 He was given by the Lord another son, whom he named Gurgēn after his uncle:
|
1:2 Նաեւ զբազում գործս արութեան ցուցանէր, որում եւ ձեռնտու լինէր Աստուած, կատարելով ի վերայ նորա զհոգենուագ մարգարէութիւն դաւթեան երգոցն, եթէ «զամենայն զոր ինչ արասցէ յաջողեսցի նմա:
| 1:2 He also demonstrated many acts of valour with the assistance of God, who fulfilled for him the inspired prophecy of the songs of David: “ Everything that he shall do will succeed for him:
|
1:3 Սա դարձեալ վերստին սեփհականեաց իւր եւ ինքեան զկնի եկելոց զգաւառն Սղգայ ի Տոսպ գաւառէ, որ առ ստորոտով լերինն Վարագայ, զոր ի վաղնջուց յափշտակեալ էին ամենաչար ազգին Իսմայէլացւոց. վասն որոյ եւ նախնիք սորա ջանահնար եղեալ՝ ոչ ինչ օգտեցան:
| 1:3 He also recovered for himself and his successors the region of Slig of Tosp province at the foot of Mount Varag, which the wicked race of Ismaelites had seized a long time before. His ancestors had striven for it, but without success:

1:4 Իսկ մեծանուն եւ քաջամարտիկ իշխանն ջատագով եղեալ հարց իւրոց ամենիմաստ հնարիւք, մանաւանդ թէ օգնականութեամբն Աստուծոյ խրախուսեալ՝ մեծաւ արութեամբ ի գիշերի առնու զամրոցն եւ տիրէ գաւառին:
| 1:4 Now the renowned and warlike prince, protector of his fathers’ [claims], by his supremely wise resourcefulness, and especially encouraged by the assistance of God, with great bravery took the fortress by night and ruled over the province:

1:5 Նաեւ զգաւառն Ըռնայ, զոր այնքան վաղագոյն այլազգեացն յափշտակեալ էին, զորոյ եւ ոչ զհամբաւն ոք դարուց ի դարս յիշատակել կարողանայ առ նա հասելոցն՝ բռնաբար կորզէ ի ձեռաց այլազգեացն. ընդ նմին եւ զայլ բազում քաղաքս յԱտրպատականէ, որոց եւ տիրէ մեծաւ ճոխութեամբ:
| 1:5 He also plucked by force out of the hands of the Muslims the province of Ěṙnay, which the Muslims had seized so long before that no one was able to recall mention of it, or what had happened to it over many centuries. Likewise [he recovered] many other towns of Atrpatakan, over which he ruled with great magnificence:

1:6 Եւ այսքան եւ այսպիսեօք բարձրանշան յաղթութեամբք հռչակաւոր եւ երեւելի ի մէջ Հայաստանեայց այրն լինէր:
| 1:6 Through so many and such remarkable victories did he become famous and well known in Armenia:
|
1:7 Իսկ չարարուեստ բանսարկուն սատանայ, որպէս երբեմն ի նախնումն ազդեցութեամբ կնոջն դաւաճանեալ, դիւրահաւան զնախահայրն առ պտղոյն առնելով ճաշակումն, զանմահս մահացոյց ի կենաց, զոր ունէաք ի դրախտին զբնութիւն՝ նմանապէս եւ աստ ի վերայ քաջի եւ մեծանուն իշխանին զնախանձուն վառեալ հուր՝ ոխս մախանաց արկանէր ի սիրտս ոմանց Հայաստանեայց, գործակից նոցա լինել. բորբոքէր եւ զթշնամիս խաչին Քրիստոսի:
| 1:7 But the cunning devil Satan— as once of old through the influence of the woman he tricked the gullible ancestor to taste the fruit, and rendered mortal the immortal nature that we had in paradise— likewise here too he stirred up the fire of envy against the valiant and renowned prince. He cast resentment and jealousy into the hearts of some Armenians so they might become accomplices; he inflamed the enemies of the cross of Christ:

1:8 որք զարիւնարբու գազանաց բերելով զօրինակ՝ կրճտէին զատամունս իւրեանց ի վերայ նորա, եւ ի խորս իջեալ չարութեան միմեանց ազդ առնելով խորհուրդս յուզէին ճարակ գտանել, գաղտնի նենգութեամբ միանգամայն եւ կեղծաւորական սիրով յաղագս ելից հնարել խոկային:
| 1:8 who like blood- thirsty beasts gnashed their teeth against him. Descending to depths of wickedness, they revealed their plots and incited each other to find means, planning by secret treachery and feigned friendship to accomplish their ends:

1:9 Այլ ոչ ուրեք երբէք յայտնել իշխէին յայսպիսեաց աստի, «գուցէ լուիցէ, ասէին, եւ սլացեալ խոյասցի ի վերայ մեր իբրեւ զարծիւ յերամս հաւուց, եւ կերակուր սրոյ զանձինս մեր առնիցէ:
| 1:9 But they never dared reveal any of this: “ Perchance he may hear,” they said, “ and swoop down on us like an eagle on flocks of birds, and make us fodder for the sword:
|
1:10 Եւ մինչդեռ այս ամենայն գաղտնի խորամանկութիւնք ի խմորս չարութեան պատրուակեալ կային՝ եւ իշխանն յանհոգս եղեալ վայելէր ի խորին խաղաղութեան, ըստ տուեցելոյ նմա ի վերուստ շնորհացն:
| 1:10 While all these secret conspiracies lay hidden fermenting, the prince, unsuspecting, enjoyed profound peace in accordance with the grace given him from above:

1:11 Աստանօր նախապատուէ զիւր ազգային ոմն որում անուն էր Գագիկ, տալով նմա զբերդն Ագարակայ եւ զգաւառն Ճախուկ, եւ զօրագլուխ զնա ի Պարսիցն կացուցանէ մարզի:
| 1:11 At this time he raised to high rank one of his kinsmen called Gagik, giving him the castle of Agarak and the province of Chakhuk, and making him commander on the Persian frontier:

1:12 Իսկ նորա ճարպոյ զակամբ եկեալ, ըստ նմանութեանն կուրացելոյ Իսրայէլի՝ ապաշնորհ առ պարգեւատուն գոլով՝ զթիկունս դարձուցանէ յիշխանէն, ապստամբութեանն յաղթեալ ախտիւ. եւ զայն տեսեալ ամէնիմաստ հզօրին՝ խորհուրդ բարձրագոյն ի մէջ առնու, ի հատուածի պատճառս առաքէ առ նա զքեռորդի իւր զՀասան:
| 1:12 But his eyes were covered with grease, like the blinded Israel; he was ungrateful to his benefactor, and turned his back on the prince, overcome by the vice of rebellion. When the all- wise and mighty [prince] saw this, he undertook a sublime plan. In order to get rid of him he sent to him his nephew Hasan:

1:13 Եւ քանզի առեալ էր Գագկայ զքոյրն Հասանայ կնութեան՝ վասն այնորիկ եւ սիրով խաղաղութեամբ ընդունի զնա յամրոցն:
| 1:13 Since Gagik had married Hasan’s sister, he therefore received him in the castle in a friendly and peaceful manner:
|
1:14 Եւ ի պատեհս գտեալ Հասանայ առնու զամրոցն: Գրէ եւ առ իշխանն ըստ օրինակի եւ ըստ պատշաճի գործոյն եղելոյ. ուր եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի ժամանէ իշխանն եւ շղթայակապ արարեալ յղէ զնա յաւանն Վան եւ ի մետաղս բնակեցուցանէ ի նորին ամրոցի:
| 1:14 Finding a suitable opportunity, Hasan seized the fortress and wrote to the prince, describing how the affair had turned out. Immediately the prince arrived, put [Gagik] in chains, sent him to the town of Van, and imprisoned him in its fortress:

1:15 Այլ որպէս յառաջագոյն ասացաք՝ դաւողք ոմանք Ատրպատականու, նմանապէս եւ որք ի Հայաստանն էին տանէ, որոց մասնակից էր եւ Գագիկս այս ապստամբ՝ միշտ խոկային զխաւարայինն իւրեանց կատարել զխորհուրդ:
| 1:15 But as we said above, some traitors from Atrpatakan, and likewise those who were Armenian and whose accomplice this rebel Gagik had been, were continually plotting to carry out their murky plan:
|
1:16 Եւ քանզի ոչ ինչ քաջին կարէին ստնանել յայտնապէս՝ ձեռն տուեալ յայր մի որ էր յոյժ սիրեցեալ իշխանին, որդի Ապումսարայ ի Խեր քաղաքէ, արտասուս եւ հառաչանս առաջի նորա արկանէին, յուշ առնէին եւ զնախանձն հայրենի, զյափշտակութիւն քաղաքաց եւ ստացուածոց, զառումն տանց եւ զքանդումն ամրոցաց, զխորտակումն զօրաց եւ զբազում արեան հեղմունս ի սրոյ հզօրին, եւ զմոլար օրէնսդրութիւնն կրօնիցն Մահումաթայ դաշն առաջի արկանէին. եւ այլք ոմանք Հայաստանեայք ինչս եւ պարգեւս խոստանային:
| 1:16 Since they were unable to harm the valiant [prince] in any way openly, they turned to a man who was very dear to the prince, the son of Apumsar from the city of Kher. Shedding tears and sighs before him, they recalled to him their patriotic zeal, the pillaging of cities and possessions, the seizure of houses and destruction of castles, the slaughter of troops and the shedding of much blood by the sword of the mighty [prince], and they set before him the false ordinances of the religion of Mahumat’. Some other Armenians promised him riches and gifts:

1:17 Այլ զոր օրինակ ի բազում փայտից զուարճանայ հուր՝ սոյնպէս եւ այրս այս ի խոստմանց եւ յուխտից աստի, մինչեւ հրապուրեցին, եւ նովաւ դաւաճանեալ զմահուն գործեցին դարան:
| 1:17 Just as fire thrives on a large supply of wood, so did this man delight in promises and pacts. Thus they seduced him, and through him craftily set the mortal trap:

1:18 Իսկ ապա այսոցիկ այսպէս եղելոց, ըստ փոփոխման եղանակաց, որ ընդ արեգական բերմամբ մարդկայինս չափին կեանք՝ ձմեռնայինն կանխեաց ժամանակ:
| 1:18 Matters were in this situation when winter arrived in accordance with the changing of the seasons, by which human lives are measured through the sun’s motion:
|
1:19 Եւ մեծանուն իշխանն ըստ նախնական սովորութեանն չու արարեալ ընդ ձորն Անձահոյ՝ եկն էջ ի Խերականն կոչեցեալ դաշտ, եւ կամէր փութապէս անցանել ի ձմերոցսն արքունի, ի գաւառն Ճուաշ յաւանն Մառական:
| 1:19 Then the illustrious prince, as was his former habit, set off through the valley of Andzah and arrived in the plain of Kher, intending to reach as rapidly as possible the royal winter quarters in the province of Chuash at the town of Maṙakan:

1:20 Յայնմ ժամանակի ընդ առաջ ելեալ այրն անօրէն, սիրելին նենգաւոր, կեղծաւոր բարեկամն, յղին անօրէնութեամբ, ծնօղն զկորստեանն պահակ, մահացու խորհրդոցն չարամայր ստնտուն, դայեակն խաւարի, արեան մտեալ սատարն, խրատեալն ի սատանայէ, անհամբոյրն ի բարեաց, արբանեակն չարին, բանալին դժոխոց, հնոցն մեղաց, վառեալն հրով նախանձու յիւրոցն գործակցաց, տիղմն խաւարին, որ զծովային մարգարիտն լուսաւոր յիւր կորստեանն ընկլոյզ խորխորատ. սա ի ձեռն կոչողաց չարին աղաչէ զմեծանուն իշխանն Վասպուրական, զի ըստ սովորական սիրոյն՝ առ իւր ագցի. զոր ոչ առնոյր յանձն իշխանն, վասն փութալոյ յիւրականն գաւառ:
| 1:20 At that time he had been preceded by the impious man, his deceitful and treacherous friend, pregnant with impiety, begetter of destruction, wicked suckling mother of mortal plots, nurse of darkness, accomplice of blood, advised by Satan, spumed by the virtuous, servant of the Evil One, key of hell, furnace of sin, ignited with the fire of envy by his own companions, mire of gloom, who engulfed in his abyss of perdition the shining pearl of the sea. Through evil messengers he begged the renowned prince of Vaspurakan to spend the night with him in accordance with his customary friendliness. The prince did not accept because he was hurrying to his own province:

1:21 Իսկ նա զցրեալ ուխտ սիրելութեանն առաջի արկանելով՝ ստիպէ զիշխանն, զի գոնեա փառազարդ երեսացն տեսող արժանի լինել հրամայեսցէ. եւ գտեալ զպարգեւն մահառիթ՝ գայ ի հանդիպումն հզօրին:
| 1:21 But the former, alleging that this was a violation of his pact of friendship, put pressure on the prince at least to let him see his glorious face. Taking a deadly present, he came to meet the mighty prince:
|
1:22 Եւ կացեալ ի հանդիպոջ՝ ոչ կարէին ընդ գիրկս խառնել միմեանց:
| 1:22 When they met they were unable to embrace each other:
|
1:23 Վասն զի ի պատճառս որսոյ ելեալ շրջէր իշխանն թափու յիւրոցն զօրացն, միանգամայն եւ մերկ ի զինուց. եւ վասն զի առուամէջ այգեստանեայց էին տեղիք դժուարինք, անջրպետեաց ի մէջ նոցա առու մի սահանակարկաջ յորդահոս յոյժ խորագոյն. ընդ որ ոչ այլազգին այն եւ ոչ ի մերոցն ոք դիմագրաւեաց անցանել զօրացն, խոստովանեալ զվհատութիւն սրտից եւ զպաշարումն երիվարացն. մանաւանդ թէ եւ ոչ իշխանն իսկ ոչ թողացուցանէ ումեք զկնի իւր անցանել:
| 1:23 For the prince had gone out hunting unaccompanied by his soldiers and without wearing armour, and the tracks through the vineyards were difficult to pass, and the [two] men were separated by a noisy rushing stream that was very deep. Neither the Muslim nor any of our soldiers dared cross it, admitting their faintheartedness and the hesitation of their horses, especially as the prince did not let anyone follow him:

1:24 Անդ քաջին եւ հզօր իշխանին մտրակ ի կուշտ արարեալ երիվարին՝ արագ ընդ դժուարինն անդր անցանէ յորձան:
| 1:24 Then the valiant and mighty prince, spurring his horse’s flank, rapidly crossed that difficult torrent:
|
1:25 Իսկ զայլազգին այն պիղծ, քանզի ոչ կարէր անձամբ զդէմ ունել հզօրին, յառաջագոյն խրատեալ յիւրոց գործակցացն՝ առեալ ունէր ընդ իւր եւ արս ուժեղս ըմբշամարտիկս զինուք ի ծածուկ:
| 1:25 Now that foul Muslim, since he was unwilling to confront the mighty prince in person, having been previously advised by his accomplices, had taken with him some strong and athletic men secretly armed:
|
1:26 Մօտ գայ յիշխանն, եւ գիրկս զպարանոցաւն արկեալ տայ զյուդայեանն համբոյր:
| 1:26 He approached the prince, and throwing his arms around his neck gave him the kiss of Judas:
|
1:27 Եւ զօրացն մերձ կացեալ զբռամբ ածին զերեսանակս, ի ձեռն միանգամայն եւ զքաջահատ սուսերն պողովատիկ, զի մի կարասցէ քաջն աճապարել ինչ ուրեք. եւ հարեալ գեղարդեամբն՝ զրաւ կենաց քաջին առնէին:
| 1:27 The troops nearby forcibly seized his bridle, and laid hands on his sharp steel sword so that the valiant [prince] was unable to gallop away. Then, striking him with the lance, they took the brave man’s life:

1:28 Եւ քանզի մանկունք տղայք եւ անկատարք էին սերեալքն ի նմանէ, Աշոտ եւ Գագիկ եւ Գուրգէն, որ չեւ եւս յարբունս հասեալ էին՝ եւ վասն այնորիկ ոչ ոք էր որ վրէժխնդիր լինէր արեան հեղլոյ անարգապէս:
| 1:28 Since his offspring were young children, Ashot, Gagik, and Gurgēn, who had not yet reached maturity, therefore there was no one to avenge his blood so unworthily shed:
|
1:29 Եւ արդ ոչ ներէ մեզ բանս առանց մեծի եւ արժանապէս ողբոց թողուլ զյիշատակ կորստեան ամէնօրհնեալ հզօրին:
| 1:29 We cannot leave the memory of the loss of this all- blessed warrior without considerable and worthy lament:

1:30 Վասն որոյ զմարգարէին գոչեմ զԵրեմիայի ժիռ մատռուակին, եւ ասեմ, «ո՞ ոք առնէր զգլուխ իմ շտեմարան ջուրց. եւ զաչս իմ յորդահոսանս վտակս աղբերաց», զի անդադար լացից զօր բեկման նորոյ Իսրայէլի:
| 1:30 Therefore I call on the bitter grape of the wine pourer, the prophet Jeremiah, saying: “ Who made my head a reservoir of water, and my eyes rapid flowing streams?” so I may ceaselessly weep for the day of the destruction of the new Israel:

1:31 Ոչ դանդաղիմ կոչել երգակից ողորմելի ողբոցս զմեծ մարգարէն զզարմանալին Զաքարիաս, եւ նովաւ հանդերձ ելանել ի բարձր դիտակս, ձայն տալ ընդհանուր ազգաց եւ ասել, «լացէ՜ք, լացէ՜ք, արեւելք առ արեւմուտս, հիւսիս առ հարաւ, ազգք առ ազգս, ժողովուրդք առ ժողովուրդս:
| 1:31 I do not hesitate to summon the similar woeful laments of the great prophet, the wonderful Zechariah, and with him go up to a high watchtower to cry out to all nations and say: “ Weep, weep, east to west, north to south, nations to nations, peoples to peoples:

1:32 Վասն զի ելիք օգնականն, լռեաց զօրավիգն, եւ առաջնորդն մեծ իշխանական ճոխութեամբն առաւ այսօր ի գլխոյ ձերմէ: Երկինք ի վեր եւ երկիր ի խոնարհ զծառայակցին ողբացին զկորուստ: Ո՞ ոք զօրն զայն ոչ ողբասցէ, ո՞յր ուրուք ոչ գելուցուն աղիքն, որ զայսպիսի ծանրատաղտուկ աղէտս տեսանել եւ կրել արժանացաք դառնապէս:
| 1:32 For the helper has left, the defender has become silent, the great leader with his princely splendour has today been taken away from our head. Heaven above and earth below mourned the loss of their fellow servant. Who would not lament that day, whose entrails would not be contorted, among us who have deserved to see and endure such cruel and terrible misfortunes:

1:33 Վասն զի ազատագունդ զօրքն տիրակորոյսք ցրուեալք ի լերինս եւ ի դաշտս վայիւք եւ ողբովք եւ յորդահոս արտասուօք զերկիրն լրացուցանէին դառնութեամբ, եւ ի խորովակսկիծ կիզմանէ աղեացն դիթաւալ յերկիր կործանեալ թմբրեալք լինէին ի դառնաճաշակ մահարբոյց բաժակէն:
| 1:33 For the noble troops, deprived of their lord and scattered over mountains and plains, bitterly filled the land with sighs, laments, and flowing tears; from the anguished burning of their entrails they were struck to the ground like corpses, benumbed by the bitter taste of the mortal cup:

1:34 Եւ մանկունք ձեռասունք թիկնապահք եւ յորս յենոյր իշխանն ձեռօք իւրովք՝ խեղդ զպարանոցաւն արկեալ զարիւնս անձանց փութային հեղուլ, լաւագոյն զմահ քան զկեանս համարելով:
| 1:34 The young men of his bodyguard, whom the prince had raised and on whom he personally relied, put nooses round their necks and were anxious to shed their own blood, preferring death to life:

1:35 Նաեւ շունք տիրասէրք ի տեղւոջ սպանմանն հոլովեալք եւ գիշերապահ վառմամբ կատաղեալք՝ ընդերկնահաջ ողբովք հալածականս առնէին զգազանս անապատի, մինչեւ ցայտմունք արեանն պատուականին յերկիր անկելոյ յարեգակնայինն տապացաւ կիզմանէ:
| 1:35 Even the dogs who loved their master, grovelling at the spot of his murder and raging in nocturnal vigil, scattered the beasts of the desert by their baying and howling to heaven, until the streams of noble blood that fell to the ground had dried in the heat of the sun:

1:36 Իսկ համբաւ հզօրին կորստեան, իբրեւ զամպ թանձրամած խաւարային լցեալ սաստկութեամբ՝ ելեալ տարածեցաւ ի վերայ Հայաստանեայցս, մանաւանդ ի վերայ բարձրագոյն եւ սեփական Վասպուրականն կոչեցեալ նահանգի. յորում տիկնայք եւ աղախնայք թողեալ զկանացի բնութեանն պատիւ՝ ի գռեհս եւ ի փողոցս բացագլխաւ ընդ երկիր զանձինս իւրեանց քարշէին:
| 1:36 The news of this mighty loss spread over Armenia like a heavy thundercloud filled with wrath, especially over his own pre- eminent province of Vaspurakan. There women and maidservants, putting aside the decorum of their female sex, heads bare, dragged themselves along the streets and roads:

1:37 Որք յանհնարին սգոյն դառնութեան՝ մատաղ մանկտոյն զսովորականն մոռացան դիեցուցանել զկաթն, ողբոց միայն պարապեալ միմեանց ձայնակցելով:
| 1:37 In their deep and bitter grief they forgot to suckle their infant children with their accustomed milk, having time only for voicing their mutual lamentations:

1:38 Ուստի եւ ի կրծաբախ ճակատահար ճայթմանցն եւ ի բարձրաճիչ աղաղակացն հնչեաց դուռն դարպասու արփիագեղ տիկնոջն մեծին Սոփեայ:
| 1:38 The palace of the great princess Sop’i, beautiful as the sun, resounded with the beating of breasts and foreheads and with shrill wailings:

1:39 Որք յաշխարելն իւրեանց ասէին այսպէս, «վա՜յ, կորեաւ մեծանուն իշխանն, եւ անտերունչ մնաց երկիրս Հայոց:
| 1:39 In their lamentations they cried: “ Woe, the renowned prince is lost, and the land of Armenia remains without a lord:
|
1:40 Իսկ տիկինն խիզախեալ յանպարտելի զօրութիւն հզօրին՝ ասէ, «զի՞ դուք, ո՜վ մարդիկք, եւ ընդէ՞ր գործել զայդ յանդգնիք. չի՛ք ուրեք թշնամիք. ո՛չ ուստեք պատեալ պատերազմ: Ո՞վ ոք զայդ գործել համարձակեցաւ, ո՞վ ոք զոսկեփետուր ախոյանարձակ քաջազգի վարուժանն իմ հաւահար առնել կամ ի ծուղակ ընբռնել կարողանայր, եւ ոչ ինքն օձտեալ ի նմանէն մեռանէր. ո՞վ ոք զբարձրաթիռ արծիւն քաջահնչօղ եւ ահարկու ձայնիւ ի խոնարհ սուզել լինէր ձեռնհաս. ո՞վ ոք զանյաղթ վիշապն սանձել մերձենայր, եւ ապրեալ լինէր ինքն:
| 1:40 The princess, who had trusted in the invincible power of the mighty [prince], said: “ Why, Oh men, and for what reason did you have the arrogance to do this? There are no enemies anywhere; no war has engulfed [us] from anywhere. Who dared to do this? Who could seize my golden- feathered champion and noble cock, or trap him in a snare, without himself being torn apart and killed? Who was able to bring low the high- flying eagle with his resounding and fearsome cry? Who could approach and bridle the unconquered dragon, and survive:

1:41 Զայսոսիկ եւ եւս յաւէտ քան զսոյնս ասէ տիկինն ընդդէմ լալականացն:
| 1:41 Such words as these, and even more, did the princess address to the mourners:
|
1:42 Իսկ իբրեւ ստուգեցաւ իրն եւ համբաւն ճշմարտեցաւ կորստեան՝ ապա այնուհետեւ յերկիր անկեալ զերեսս ի գետնի դնելով, մոխիր ի վերայ ցանելով գլխոյն, եւ խաւար ձեռագործ յօդս ցնդէ տաճարին:

Summoning her daughters, she prescribed rites of mourning and arranged in groups Jewish singers, and had them chant the laments of the kings of Israel. On that day the holy churches and ranks of ministers were arrayed in mourning:

1:44 Ի բաց առան ի դրաց սենեկացն ոսկեհուռն կամարաձեւ երանգոցն տարազք, եւ սեաւք խոշորագոյնք եւ յոյժ տխրալիք զտեղին փոխաբերեցին. եւ ընթացեալք այսր անդր սուրհանդակք լալականացս՝ խցին զլուսանցոյց պատուհանս հրաշակերտ ապարանիցն, հրամանաւ տիկնոջն:
| 1:44 The golden- laced, arc- shaped coloured hangings were removed from the doors of the rooms, to be replaced by black ones, very rough and sombre. Messengers were despatched hither and yon from among the mourners to shut the windows of the splendid palace, at the order of the princess:

1:45 զի մի, ասէ, արեգակն յանհաս բարձրութեանն երկնից ճեմեսցի կամար. եւ զճառագայթս ի խոնարհ արձակելով՝ զիմս լուսաւորեսցէ խաւար. եւ կամ լուսինն ի լրմանն ժամանեալ ամանակ, արուսեկիւն հանդերձ եւ բնաւ զարդուն աստեղաց՝ զիմս փարատեսցէ մէգ, մինչեւ տացէ ինձ Աստուած յորդւոց իմոց այրասիրտ նման հօր իւրոյ, որ ի կեանս իմ կամ թէ զկնի կենաց իմոց ի վերայ գերեզմանին տացէ աւետիս՝ առեալ վրէժ հեղման արեան հօր իւրոյ ի գլխոց այնոցիկ, որք զայս ինձ հատուցին խաւար:
