14:0 Դառնալ Դերանկին ի հայս, եւ սկիզբն դարձուցանել տեառն զգերութիւն իշխանացն բոլոր Հայաստանեայց:
| 14:0 The return of Derenik to Armenia, and the beginning of the Lord’s restoration of the princes of all Armenia from captivity:

14:1 Եւ եղեւ ի լնուլ վեցերորդ ամի գերութեանն Հայոց որ է [ՅԶ] ամ ըստ թուոյ հայերէն տումարին, եւ ունի յոբելեանք [Զ] եւ ոլիմպիադր եւ ընդիքտիոնք, եւ [Գ] ամ հայրապետութեան Հայոց կաթողիկոսի տեառն Զաքարիայի, եւ մուտ եօթներորդ ամի, յորում կային յարքունիսն իշխանքն, ըստ եօթնեկի չափոյ շարժման ժամանակաց. որպէս սահմանեաց Աստուած ի վերայ ժողովրդեանն Իսրայէլի գերելոցն ի Բաբելոն, որպէս գրեալ է ի մարգարէութեանն Երեմիայի, «[Զ–ՀԷ երորդսն] ասէ գիտասցես, եւ խելամուտ լիցիս յելից բանին տալ պատասխանի. մինչեւ յօծեալն եօթներորդ է եւ եօթներորդք [ԿԲ]». նմանապէս զնոյն ընծայեցուցանէ Դանիէլ:
| 14:1 The sixth year of the captivity of Armenia was completed, which was the [306th] year of the Armenian calendar— equivalent to six jubilees and olympiads and indictions— and the third year of the patriarchate of Lord Zak’aria, Catholicos of Armenia. It was the beginning of the seventh year that the princes had been at court, in accordance with the septennial measure of time, just as God had allotted for the people of Israel in captivity in Babylon, as it is written in the prophecy of Isaiah: “ You will know the seventy- seventh and you will understand how to respond, from the issuance of the saying up to the Anointed [will be] seven weeks and sixty- two weeks.” In like fashion Daniel makes the same declaration:

14:2 Արդ նոցա այնքան, իսկ մեզ ի մասնէ զբոլորն համառօտեալ ի թիւս միակաց լրման, եւ զբովանդակութեան ամաց ըստ տասանց եօթներորդացն որ թուոցն է լիագոյն [Է]՝ ժամանակակարգեաց համառօտեաց ի վերայ նորս Իսրայէլի, այսինքն հեթանոսաց:
| 14:2 So much do they [say]. As for us, we shall abbreviate the whole revolution into single numbers, [reckoning] the total of years according to tens of weeks, which is the most perfect of numbers— seven. To that period of time did God abbreviate his decree against this new Israel, that is [among] the heathen:

14:3 Եւ զայս առատապէս հեղեալ զգութ արարչական խնամոցն առ արարածս իւր, ողորմեալ մարդասիրապէս բարեխօսութեամբ սրբոցն, որք հեղին զարիւնս իւրեանց վասն ուղիղ եւ անբիծ դաւանութեանն ի Քրիստոս, եւ վասն ճգնութեան երանելւոյն Գրիգորի Արծրունոյ քաջ նահատակին, յաղթող վկային, խոստովանողին Քրիստոսի, եւ ի ձեռն հովուապետին սրբոյն Յովհաննիսի եպիսկոպոսի եւ ճգնաւոր քահանայի Գրիգորի:
| 14:3 Then abundantly he poured out the mercy of his creative care for his creatures, humanely pitying them at the intercession of the saints who had shed their blood for the true and unsullied confession in Christ, and for the exertions of the blessed Grigor Artsruni, the valiant champion and victorious martyr and confessor of Christ, and through the chief shepherd, Saint Yovhannēs the bishop, and the heroic priest Grigor:

14:4 որք միշտ զողորմութեանց խնդրուածս վասն ժողովրդեանն տեառն ի վեր առաքէին, զոր օրինակ եւ հրեշտակն տեառն աղերսէր Աստուծոյ, ասէ, «մինչեւ յե՞րբ ոչ ողորմեսցիս Երուսաղէմի եւ քաղաքացն Յուդայ. այս [Հ-երորդ] ամ է»: Եւ յոր կոյս կամի հայեցուցանէ զնոսա:
| 14:4 These continuously addressed pleas for mercy on high on behalf of the Lord’s people, just as the angel of the Lord implored God, saying: “ For how long will you not have mercy on Jerusalem and the cities of Juda? This is the seventieth year.” And he inclined them to the direction he wished:

14:5 Եւ լուաւ տէր աղօթից նոցա, եւ դարձաւ ի բարկութենէ սրտմտութեան իւրոյ գթութեամբ եւ ողորմութեամբ, որպէս գրեցին երանելի մարգարէքն:
| 14:5 The Lord heard their prayers and turned from the anger of his wrath in pity and mercy, as the blessed prophets wrote:
|
14:6 Եւ եղեւ յետ աւուրցն այնոցիկ, յորժամ ուրախ արար թագաւորն զնախարարսն Հայոց ի տաճարի խրախից, եւ խոստացաւ տալ իւրաքանչիւր ումեք զերկիր ի ժառանգութիւն՝ յայնժամ հրամայեաց ածել առաջի իւր զԱշոտ եւ զորդի նորա Գրիգոր:
| 14:6 After those days, when the caliph had delighted the Armenian princes in his banqueting hall and had promised to restore to each one his lands in inheritance, he then commanded Ashot and his son Grigor to be brought before him:

14:7 Եւ զգեցոյց նոցա հանդերձս եւ կանգնեաց նշանակ իշխանական եւ էած սուսեր ընդ մէջ եւ կամար ականակապ եւ երիվար ընտիր մեծազարդ. եւ եհան զնոսա յատենէն հոյակապ եւ շքեղ եւ երեւելի պատուով ի ձայնս երգոց եւ ի հնչիւնս փողոց. եւ քարոզքն բարձրացուցանէին զերգսն մեծ եւ սաստիկ գոչմամբ, եթէ տուաւ իշխանութիւն Վասպուրական աշխարհին Աշոտոյ եւ որդւոյ իւրոյ Գրիգորի. եւ հրովարտակ արքայի ի ձեռս քարոզչացն, թէ յղեաց արքայ զԳրիգոր որդի Աշոտոյ յերկիր իւր՝ տիրել աշխարհի իւրոյ փոխանակ հօր իւրոյ:
| 14:7 He clothed them with garments, set [in their hands] a princely banner, girded them with a sword and belt adorned with precious stones, [gave them] a select and richly ornamented horse, then despatched them from the chamber in glorious splendor and notable honour to the sound of singing and the blowing of trumpets. Heralds proclaimed with voices loud and clear that the principality of the land of Vaspurakan had been given to Ashot and his son Grigor, holding in their hands the royal decree that the caliph had sent Grigor, son of Ashot, to his own country to rule over his land in the place of his father:

14:8 Յայնժամ ելեալ իշխանն Գրիգոր յերեսաց արքայի մեծաւ ուրախութեամբ եւ անպատում խնդութեամբ՝ եւ եկն եմուտ յերկիր իւր յիշխանութիւն Վասպուրական կոչեցեալ:
| 14:8 Then Prince Grigor departed from the caliph in great joy and indescribable happiness, and entered his own land, the principality called Vaspurakan:

14:9 Եւ տիրեաց երկրի իւրոյ իշխանական ճոխութեամբ: Եւ էր ամաց իբրեւ տասանց յորժամ նստաւ յաթոռ տէրութեան հօր իւրոյ:
| 14:9 He ruled his country with princely authority. When he sat on the throne of his father’s dominions he was about ten years old:

14:10 Յութերորդ ամի գերութեանն դառնայ Գուրգէն եղբայր Աշոտի միապետել զիշխանութիւն տէրութեանն եւ յարդարել կարգել յօրինել զկարգս շփոթեալ աւերեալ երկրիս:
| 14:10 In the eighth year of the captivity Gurgēn, Ashot’s brother, returned to exercise sole control over his principality and domains, and to restore order to the land that had been troubled and ruined:
|
14:11 Զի թէպէտ եւ Գուրգէն մեծաւ զօրութեամբ ունէր զդէմ յարձակելոցն ի վերայ, որոց զիշխանականն ճեպէին հասանել գահ, կամ որ արտաքին տաճկական պատերազմունքն բռնաբար ի ներքս դիմէին՝ սակայն ոչ յապահովանայր դեռ երկիրն:
| 14:11 For although [the other] Gurgēn had opposed with great energy the attacks of those who were striving for the princely title, or the violent and bellicose assaults of the Muslims from outside, nonetheless, the land was not secure:
|
14:12 Այլ հինիցն ասպատակքն, սովոյն բռնութիւն, գերիվարացն տառապանք, գազանաց յարձակմունքն, ներքին եւ արտաքին վրդովմունքն հոլանի առնէին զաշխարհս:
| 14:12 But raids by brigands, the constraints of famine, the afflictions of captors, the attacks of wild beasts, disturbances within and without openly gripped the land:
|
14:13 Իսկ իբրեւ եկն Գուրգէն երկրորդ՝ փութացաւ գնաց հասանել ի վերայ առաջնոյն Գուրգինի. զի բռնացեալ բնակէր յամուրսն Սրինգ եւ Ջղմար. եւ ի հասանելն նորա անդր թողեալ զհակառակաբար մարտն՝ խօսին ի խաղաղութիւն, առաջի եդեալ զհրամանն արքունի, զգլխաւորին Տաճկաց, եւ Աշոտի հաւատալ զբոլոր տէրութիւնս Վասպուրականի:
| 14:13 When the second Gurgēn arrived, he hastily moved to attack the first Gurgēn, for the latter had seized and was occupying the castles of Sring and Jłmar. But when he reached there, he abandoned armed opposition for peace talks, citing the royal command of the leader of the Muslims that the whole principality of Vaspurakan was to be entrusted to Ashot:

14:14 Որում ոչ անհնազանդ գտեալ՝ իմաստնախորհ զօրութեամբ ելանէ յամրոցացն: Եւ Գուրգէն երկրորդ հրեշտակս յղէ առ նա զայս օրինակ, եթէ «ընդ իս հաստատեա զանզրաւ կապակցութիւն ուխտի խաղաղութեան, եւ ես ապստամբեցայց յԱշոտէ, եւ ի միասին բաժանեալ զերկիրս կեցցուք յապահովս:
| 14:14 To this he was not unresponsive, and with wise courage abandoned the castles. The second Gurgēn sent him messengers to the effect that: “ If you confirm a permanent alliance with me in a peace agreement, I too shall revolt against Ashot. Together we shall divide the land and live in security.”
14 But Gurgēn did not agree to this, for two reasons. First “ lest I appear to be in rebellion against the caliph of the Muslims,” who had heard of his prowess in many other wars and of the defeats he had inflicted on the Muslim army, and was suspicious of what he had done with Ashot:

14:15 Բայց ոչ ետ տեղի Գուրգէն այսմ՝ յերկուց պատճառաց, մի՝ զի մի՛ ապստամբ երեւեցայց Տաճկաց բռնաւորին, զորոյ լուեալ էր զբազմաց այլ պատերազմացն արիութիւն, եւ զհարուածս զօրացն Տաճկաց, կասկած ունելով որ ինչ գործեացն ընդ Աշոտ:
15 Երկրորդ՝ զի եւ ոչ հաւատայր Գուրգէնի՝ ամբողջ պահելով, զոր ինչ միջնորդեն երդմամբ, զհօրն իւր կիրսն ի նորայն հօրէն կրեալ յուշ առնելով:
| 14:15 And second, because he did not trust Gurgēn, fully remembering what they had negotiated under oath and aware of what his own father had suffered from the other’s father:
|
14:16 Այնուհետեւ ել գնաց դէմ եդեալ զյունականօքն շրջել զկողմամբքն, յանձն արարեալ զհոգս իւր շնորհացն Աստուծոյ. զի կատարեալ էր սիրտ նորա ընդ տեառն Աստուծոյ ամենակալի:
| 14:16 Therefore he set out to travel around the regions of Greek territory, entrusting his cares to the grace of God; for his heart was consecrated to the Lord God omnipotent:
|
14:17 Եւ ի հասանելն նորա ի Թէոդոսի քաղաքն ի Կարին գաւառ՝ եհաս լուր նորա առ կայսր Միքայէլ թագաւոր Յունաց. եւ փութացոյց վասն նորա զի անյապաղ առ նա հասցէ, եւ ի մեծ պատիւս հիւպատութեան հասուսցէ զնա, եւ խաչանշան դրօշիւք ճոխասցի:
| 14:17 When he arrived at the city of Theodosius in the province of Karin, news of him reached the emperor Michael, king of the Greeks, who was prompt to arrange that he proceed to him without delay, in order that he might elevate him to the great honour of the consulate and decorate him with the insignia of the cross:
|
14:18 Եւ մինչդեռ այս գործ խորհրդածէր՝ հասին ի վերայ նորա քաղաքապետք երկու, անուն միոյն Բշիր եւ երկրորդին Զքրի, եւ կալան զնա տանել առ Աշոտ որդի սպարապետին:
| 14:18 While this plan was under consideration, two emirs, one called Bshir and the other Zk’ri, fell on [Gurgēn], captured him, and brought him to Ashot son of the sparapet:
|
14:19 Նա թէպէտ եւ զչարացաւ ընդ եղեալսն՝ սակայն զանգիտեաց թողուլ զնա երթալ, ակնածելով ի չարայոյզ ազգէն Իսմայէլի, զի դեռ եւս տիրէր բռնութիւնն, եւ գերեալքն եւ հայրն իւր սպարապետն յարքունիս էին:
| 14:19 Although the latter was irritated at what had occurred, nonetheless he hesitated to let him go, fearful of the troublesome race of Ismael which still exercised tyrannical control, and [because] the captives and his father the sparapet were at court:
|
14:20 Ազդ առնէ քաղաքապետին Տփղեաց. եւ խնդրեալ զնա առ ինքն՝ ստիպէր տագնապէր ահս արկանելով, թողուլ զօրէնս քրիստոնէութեան եւ յանդորր ելանել:
| 14:20 So he informed the governor of the city of Tiflis. The latter demanded that [Gurgēn] come to him, insisting and intimidating witji threats that he abandon the Christian religion; then he would not be troubled:
|
14:21 Նորա ծաղր արարեալ զնովաւ՝ ընտրեաց զկապանս եւ զբանդ, նաեւ զմահ քաջութեամբ վասն անուանն Քրիստոսի, քան զկեանս խղճիւ:
| 14:21 But he mocked him, choosing bonds and imprisonment, even death with valour for the name of Christ over life with remorse:
|
14:22 Որոց կապեալ զԳուրգէն երեքկին կապանօք եւ դարձեալ ի պարանոցն եդեալ շղթայս՝ յղեն ընդ Ատրպատական Պարսից եւ տան ի բանդ ընդ կապեալսն. առ որ յղեալ բազում անգամ պէսպէս սպառնալեօք եւ ողոքական բանիւք հաւանութեամբ թողուլ զօրէնս քրիստոնէութեան եւ հաւասարակցել այլոց ուրացողացն զՔրիստոս. որ ոչ եւ փոքր մի խոտորեցաւ ի բանս բռնաւորին, վասն սիրոյն Քրիստոսի:
| 14:22 They bound Gurgēn with triple bonds and also put chains on his neck, sent him through Persian Atrpatakan, and brought him to the prison with the captives. They frequenty addressed him with various threats and persuasive words that he might abandon the Christian religion and join the other apostates from Christ. But not in the least was he perverted by the tyrant’s words, because of his love for Christ:

14:23 Դարձեալ զՍողոմոն Բագրատունի վառեալ ի զէն սատանայական՝ յղէ առ նա բազում անգամ զնոյն խորհելով. եւ նա դարձուցանէր զնա կսկծեցուցանող բանիւք իբր զարբանեակ սատանայի:
| 14:23 He also clad Solomon Bagratuni with the weapons of Satan and frequently sent him to him with the same intention. But [Gurgēn] rejected him with smarting words as a servant of the devil:
|
14:24 Երեւեալ նմա յայնժամ ի բանտին այր մի գեղեցկատեսիլ ի կերպարանս ալեւորի, լուսակիզն փայլմամբ՝ ասէ ցԳուրգէն, «զգոյշ լեր, արիաբար մարտեաց, քաջապէս վառեաց, Քրիստոսի զինուորեաց:
| 14:24 Then there appeared to him in the prison a handsome person in the form of a grey- haired man, shining with light, who said to Gurgēn: “ Take heed, strive valiantly, arm yourself bravely, be a warrior of Christ:
|
14:25 Մի՛ խոտորիցիս ի մոլար օրէնս վրիպելոցն ի ճշմարտութենէն, ազգին Իսմայէլի, որպէս որք վրիպեցանն գերեալքն Հայոց:
| 14:25 Do not incline to the false religion of those who have turned away from the truth, the race of Ismael, like those Armenian captives who were deluded:
|
14:26 Եւ նա եւս քան զեւս պնդեալ հաստատեալ կայր ի հաւատս, ի սէր եւ ի յոյսն Քրիստոսի. եւ մտեալ ի խորագոյն բանտ, տարեալ յամենայնի գոհութեամբ վասն անուանն Քրիստոսի, սովով եւ ծարաւով ժուժկալութեամբ մեծաւ:
| 14:26 So he was even more confirmed and strengthened in the faith, in the love and hope of Christ. Cast into the farthest recesses of the prison, he endured everything with praise for the name of Christ— hunger and thirst, with great fortitude:

14:27 Բայց Գուրգէն զմի ամ կեցեալ փոխի յաշխարհէս, դարձեալ յուրացողական ամբարշտութենէն:
| 14:27 But [the other] Gurgēn lived one more year and then departed this world, having turned from the impiety of the apostates:
|
14:28 Եւ տարեալ հանգուցանեն ի տեղւոջ հանգստարանացն իւրեանց ի սուրբ Խաչի վանս:
| 14:28 They brought him and laid him to rest in their sepulchre in the monastery of the Holy Cross:
|
14:29 Եւ Դերենկին զօրացեալ զօրութեամբ Քրիստոսի, եւ հոյակապ եւ անուանի եղեալ ընդ բոլոր աշխարհ Հայաստանեայց՝ եւ խաղաղանայր երկիրս ի շփոթմանցն ի վերայ եկելոցն:
| 14:29 Derenik, strengthened by the power of Christ, became glorious and renowned throughout the whole land of Armenia; and the country had respite from the confusions that had befallen it:
|
14:30 Եւ սկսաւ երկիրս առնուլ զնորոգումն, եւ եկեղեցիքն պայծառանալ ի զարդ եւ ի պաշտօնս շքեղութեան, եւ ցրուեալքն դռոթ տուեալ դարձան յիւրաքանչիւր տեղիս՝ շինել, տնկել, մոռանալ զցաւսն եւ զտրտմութիւնսն զոր կրեցին:
| 14:30 The country began to experience a renewal, the churches to shine with ornamentation and splendid rituals; those scattered rushed back to their own places to build, plant, and forget the pains and afflictions they had endured:

14:31 Ընդ ժամանակսն ընդ այնոսիկ մինչ ճոխացեալ մեծամեծս փքայր Ջափրմոթոքլ ի վերայ քրիստոնէից, որպէս Սենէքէրիմ նախնին մեր ի վերայ Երուսաղէմի եւ ժողովրդեանն Իսրայէլի՝ յեղակարծում հասեալ ի վերայ նորա որդին իւր Մոթէին սպան զնա, եւ ինքն թագաւորեաց փոխանակ ընդ հօր իւրոյ, եւ յետ [Զ] ամսոց մեռանի:
| 14:31 In those times, while Jap’rmot’ok’l was greatly puffed up and waxing haughty against the Christians— like Senek’erim our ancestor against Jerusalem and the people of Israel— suddenly his own son Mot’ēin attacked and slew him. He reigned in his father’s place, and died after six months:

14:32 Եւ թագաւորէ ընդ նորա որդի հօրեղբօր նորա Մուհթիս, եւ կացեալ ամիսս [Գ] մեռանի:
| 14:32 After him the son of his uncle Muht’is reigned, and having lived for three months died:
|
14:33 Եւ իշխանքն Հայոց կային ի տագնապի եւ խնդրէին զելս իրացն գտանել ի Քրիստոսէ, յորմէ լքեալն էին:
| 14:33 The Armenian princes remained in danger, seeking a way out of their troubles from Christ, from whom they had fallen away:
|
14:34 Բայց յետ աւուրց բազմաց անցանելոյ շփոթմանցն՝ Գուրգէնի ընդարձակեալ նախախնամութեամբն Քրիստոսի եւ ելեալ փրծեալ ի բանտէն՝ եկն եմուտ յաշխարհ իւր:
| 14:34 But after the passage of many troubled days, Gurgēn was released by Christ’s providence, saved from prison, and returned to his land:
|
14:35 Եւ իբրեւ ազդ եղեւ Դերենկին՝ գնաց ընդդէմ նորա պատերազմաւ, եւ դառնայր փախստեայ:
| 14:35 When the news reached Derenik, he moved to attack him, but was turned back and fled:
|
14:36 Եւ դարձեալ ուժեղացեալ դարձաւ ընդդէմ Գուրգինի. եւ երիվարին ընդ վազս փռնգալիր խրոխտանացն փրծուցեալ զնա ի ցաւոցն, քանզի այն ինչ կազդուրեալ էր Գուրգէն ի հիւանդութենէ եւ ի կրից աշխատութեանցն եւ ի տառապանաց բանտին. հասեալ կալան զնա եւ տարան ետուն ի բանտ երկաթից ի քաղաքն Հադամակերտ:
| 14:36 Taking courage again, he returned to oppose Gurgēn, whose horse, galloping along and neighing haughtily, threw him from pain. For Gurgēn was still recovering from illness and from his sufferings and afflictions in prison. They [Derenik’s men] came upon him, seized him, and brought him to prison in irons in the city of Hadamakert:

14:37 Եւ ծառայ մի Դերենկին որ բանտապանն էր՝ լուծեալ զնա ի կապանացն՝ եւ տարեալ մուծանէ ի սենեակն ուր ննջէր Դերենիկն. եւ ծառայն զչարիս խորհեալ սպանանել զԴերենիկն եւ զաշխարհս նուաճել զիշխանութիւն Գուրգինի, զի եւ դիպող էր ժամն:
| 14:37 A servant of Derenik’s who was the jailer loosed him from his bonds and brought him into the room where Derenik was sleeping. The servant had the evil intention of killing Derenik and handing the principality of the land to Gurgēn, for this was a convenient opportunity:

14:38 Բայց Գուրգէն ընտրեաց զսէրն Քրիստոսի, քան զսէր փոքրամեայ աշխարհիս. ոչ խնդրելով զվրէժ արեան սպանելոյ հօր նորա ի պապոյն նորա, ձայն բարձեալ արտասուալից առ Դերենիկն, եւ զսուսեր մերկ ի ձեռին ունելով, եւ վաղր եւ սակր մի՝ ասէ. «որդեա՛կ իմ Դերենիկ, ողջոյն քեզ, ողջոյն քեզ. ես ելի գնացի ի յաշխարհն Յունաց:
| 14:38 But Gurgēn preferred the love of Christ to the love of this transitory world. He did not seek vengeance for the blood of his father murdered by the other’s grandfather; but addressing Derenik tearfully and holding in his hand a drawn sword, a sabre and axe, he said: “ My son Derenik, greetings to you, greetings to you, greetings to you. I have gone off to the territory of the Greeks:

14:39 Եւ նորա առ ահն պակուցեալ, ասէ. հայր իմ, խնայեա յիս. եւ այլ ոչ զօրեաց բարբառել ինչ: Եւ Գուրգէն ելեալ գնաց փութանակի անյայտ առնել զինքն, մինչեւ յաջողեսցի ըստ կամաց Քրիստոսի յո՛վ եւ երթիցէ:
| 14:39 The other, stricken by fear, said: “ My father, have mercy on me,” and was unable to utter anything else. Then Gurgēn hastily went out to conceal himself until he should succeed at Christ’s will wherever he might go:

14:40 Եւ երթեալ հասանէ ի գիւղակ մի Երագանի անուն առ մոնազն մի, որ էր երէց վանիցն: Զնա որպէս զերկիւղած Աստուծոյ ապաստան յինքեան արարեալ՝ խնդրէր պահպանել նմա. եւ նորա արկեալ զնա ի փոքրագոյն տեղի մի նեղ, եւ ինքն փութացաւ գոյժ ետ վասն նորա՝ մահու պատահել, լի անմտութեամբ մոլի աբեղայն, որում ոչ հրամայեցաւ. այլ նա ըստ կամս իւր կատարեաց ի վերայ իւր զարենապարտն լինել, որ տալոց է հատուցումն վրիժուց յաւուր դատապարտութեան իւրոյ:
| 14:40 He reached a village called Eragani, and came to a monk who was priest in the monastery. As a fearer of God he trusted himself to him and begged him to protect him. The latter enclosed him in a tiny, narrow space, then made haste to put out the sad news that [Gurgēn] had died; he was a mad monk full of folly, [who did] what he had not been ordered to do: of his own will he carried out a crime against himself, for which he will pay retribution on the day of his judgment:

14:41 Բայց Դերենիկն կալեալ զնա պահէ ի զգուշութեան, ոչ ինչ ստնանել նմա, բաց ի կապանացն յորս արկեալ էր զնա, ըստ հատուցմանն բարւոյ. այլ ձեռն պատրաստ կշռեաց նմա եւ օրհնեցաւ ի սրբոյն Զաքարիայէ:
| 14:41 But Derenik captured him and kept him carefully, doing him no harm save for the bonds in which he had fettered him, as compensation for his goodness. But he rendered him a ready hand and was blessed by Saint Zak’aria:

14:42 Քանզի իբրեւ լուաւ երանելին Զաքարիայ, եթէ ըմբռնեցաւ Գուրգէն՝ փութացաւ եւ եկն հանդերձ եպիսկոպոսօք աշխարհին. եւ էր ընդ նմա Աշոտ իշխանաց իշխան, եւ աղերսեալ զիշխան Դերենիկ, զի լուծցէ զնա ի կապանացն: Որում ունկնդիր եղեալ իշխանն՝ կատարէ զասացեալսն:
| 14:42 For when the blessed Zak’aria heard that Gurgēn had been seized, he made haste to come with the bishops of the land, accompanied also by Ashot, prince of princes, and begged the prince Derenik to release him from bonds. The prince paid him heed and carried out his equest:

14:43 Եւ դաշնաւորեալ ի մէջ երկոցունց՝ մնալ առանց կասկածանաց. եւ զՄարդաստան գաւառն զբուն բաժին Գուրգենայ դարձոյց առ նա Դերենիկն:
| 14:43 And the two made a mutual pact not to be mistrustful of each other. Derenik restored to Gurgēn the province of Mardastan, his own allotment:

14:44 Բայց Գուրգէն կասկած ունելով յԱշոտէ, թէ իբրեւ զապստամբէ ումեմնէ զեկուցանիցէ զնմանէ առաջնորդին Տաճկաց՝ ել գնաց կեալ շրջաբերական յեղափոխմամբ, արիական քաջասրտութեամբ, սիրեցեալ ընդ բնաւ աշխարհաց:
| 14:44 But Gurgēn suspected that Ashot might report him as a rebel to the leader of the Muslims, so he went out to live in the guise of a vagabond with brave courage, loved throughout all lands:

14:45 Բայց քանզի հաւատացեալ էր վերակացութիւն աշխարհիս Հայոց Աշոտի, որ իշխանաց իշխան՝ ձեռն ի գործ արկեալ նուաճել զիշխանս Հայոց, զՎրաց եւ զԱղուանից, որ եղեւ իսկ:
| 14:45 Now since the oversight of Armenia had been entrusted to Ashot, who was the prince of princes, he undertook the subjection of the princes of Armenia, Gēorgia, and Albania— which indeed he brought about:

14:46 Եւ զօր գումարեալ եկն եմուտ ի Վանտոսպ, եւ Դերենիկն յանդիման եղեւ նմա. եւ նորա կալեալ զնա եւ ի կապանս մատնեալ որպէս զանհնազանդ ոմն՝ եւ եկն անց յոստանն Ռշտունեաց:
| 14:46 Gathering a force he entered Vantosp; Derenik opposed him, but he [Ashot] captured him and put him in bonds like some disobedient [subject] and passed into the capital of Ṙshtunik’:

14:47 Ազդ եղեւ Գուրգենի վասն Դերենկին, եւ զիա՛րդ ըմբռնեցաւ. փութացաւ ի կողմանցն Տարունոյ երագագոյն ճեպ զճեպի. եւ բանակեցան [Ն] արամբք, վառեալ ի զէն եւ յասպազէն, ի Նորագեօղ Ռշտունեաց:
| 14:47 When Gurgēn received news of Derenik and how he had been seized, he marched rapidly with all speed from the regions of Tarōn. They encamped four hundred men strong, armed with armour for men and horses, in Noragiwl of Ṙshtunik’:

14:48 Եւ գրէ առ իշխանաց իշխան՝ ի բաց լքանել եթէ ունիցի ինչ անօգուտս խորհել, ապա թէ ոչ՝ տեսից զքեզ, ասէ, ի զէն եւ յասպազէն եւ ի ճակատամարտ. եւ խորհէր յեղակարծում ի գիշերամարտս հասանել ի վերայ Աշոտի:
| 14:48 He wrote to the prince of princes [bidding him] renounce any useless plans he might have. “ Otherwise, he said, I shall see you with arms and armoured cavalry drawn up in battle array.” He was planning to attack Ashot unexpectedly by night:

14:49 Բայց առոգացեալ իմաստութեամբ իշխանաց իշխան՝ փութացաւ առ կատարումն գրելեացն Գուրգինի:
| 14:49 But the prince of princes, wisely inspired, hastened to fulfill Gurgēn’s request:

14:50 Եւ քանզի այն ինչ վախճանեալ էր կին Դերենկին՝ գրէ Գուրգէն առ Աշոտ, ասէ. «եւ այս եւս քաջահաճոյ թուիցի քեզ, վեհդ եւ ամենեցուն գիտելիդ. եւ զի եղիցի ի մէջ քո եւ Դերենկիդ անկասկած միաւորութիւն՝ զդուստր քո տացես կնութեան Դերենկիդ, տիկնութեան Վասպուրականի:
| 14:50 And because Derenik’s wife had just died, Gurgēn wrote to Ashot, saying: “ Does it not seem a fine idea to you, most noble and eminent of all men, that there would be a trusting alliance between you and Derenik if you gave your daughter in marriage to Derenik as princess of Vaspurakan:

14:51 Եւ անյապաղ գլխաւորեալ խորհրդոցն՝ առնու ընդ իւր զԴերանիկն, եւ էանց գնաց ի տուն իւր ի Բագարան:
| 14:51 Without delay the plan was carried out. He took with him Derenik and went to his own house in Bagaran:

14:52 Եւ արարին նաւակատիս մեծ հարսանեաց փեսայութեան Դերանկին, ի թուականութեան Հայոց [ՅԺԱ–երորդ] ամին:
