8:171 Particularly when he saw that the terrible casualties of his own forces were three times worse than the Armenians’, his strength and powers failed and he could not calm his troubled mind, since the outcome of the battle was not what he had expected:
| 8:171 Մանաւանդ իբրեւ ետես զանհնարին հարուածսն երեքպատիկ զիւրոյ գնդին քան զՀայոցն, բեկաւ անկաւ զաւրութիւն ուժոյն իւրոյ, եւ ոչ հանդարտէր կալ ի վերայ խորհրդոց մտացն. քանզի ոչ որպէս կարծէր զպատերազմն՝ կատարեցաւ:

8:172 When he saw the great number of fallen on his own side and reckoned them up, and when he discovered how many more of his men had fallen than in the Armenian army, he was especially disturbed—even more so on account of the notable men whom the king knew personally:
| 8:172 Մանաւանդ իբրեւ հայէր տեսանէր զբազմութիւն անկելոց իւրոյ կողմանն, եւ թիւ համարոյ եւս առնէր, եւ իբրեւ այնչափ յոլով գտանէր զիւր անկեալսն քան զՀայոց գնդին, եւս առաւել վասն երեւելի արանցն, զորս յականէ յանուանէ գիտէր թագաւորն, ի մեծ տագնապի լինէր այրն յանձն իւր:

8:173 For fear of the king he could not describe events accurately, yet again he was unable to conceal them, as such a great battle could not be hidden:
| 8:173 Արդարութեամբ զիրսն գրել եւ ցուցանել՝ ի թագաւորէն երկնչէր. դարձեալ եւ թաքուցանել եւս ոչ կարէր, քանզի ոչ ծածկէր այնպիսի մեծ կռիւ:

8:174 While his thoughts were on this and his mind was troubled, Vasak the apostate, who had survived by hiding himself among the elephants, came up to console his distress. He indicated to him deceitful means whereby he might be able to attack the strongholds by guile:
| 8:174 Եւ մինչդեռ յայսմ մտաց խորհրդի էր յանձն իւր եւ նեղէր ի միտս իւր, ուրացեալն Վասակ, որ զանձն իւր ի մէջ գազանացն թագուցեալ ապրեցոյց, մխիթար մատուցանէր մտացն լքելոց, եւ ուսուցանէր նմա հնարս նենգութեամբ, թէ ո՛րպէս կարասցէ մարտնչել ընդ ամուրսն խաբէութեամբ:

8:175 He sealed sworn declarations with the royal imprint and with his own witness and that of the false priests in his company. The latter he sent as messengers to announce pardon for the insurrection, and he indicated that permission had been granted to restore the church and that all conditions were to be reestablished in their former order:
| 8:175 Երդմունս կնքէր արքունի հրամանաւ եւ վկայութեամբ անձին իւրոյ եւ խաբեբայ երիցամբքն, որ ընդ նմայն էին. պատգամաւորս առնէր զնոսա, եւ երեւեցուցանէր զթողութիւն ապստամբութեանն առ ի շինութիւն եկեղեցւոյ շնորհել անդրէն, եւ զամենայն կարգս անդրէն յարմարել ըստ առաջին սովորութեանն:

8:176 Although the king’s command had been definitely given—because his power had indeed been broken as he had been struck on two sides—nonetheless the Armenian troops were unable to believe the king’s order immediately because of the treachery of Vasak, whose deceit they had frequently recognized:
| 8:176 Թէպէտ եւ հրաման թագաւորին հաստատութեամբ էր տուեալ, - վասն զի յոյժ բեկաւ զաւրութիւն նորա, որպէս զի երկոքին կողմանք նորա հարան, - սակայն զաւրքն Հայոց վասն նենգութեանն Վասակայ, որ բազում անգամ հասեալ էին ի վերայ ստութեան նորա, վասն այնորիկ եւ հրամանի թագաւորին վաղվաղակի ոչ կարէին հաւատալ:
