11:251 Likewise, lands, whether patrimonial, or gifted, or purchased, that anyone has seized, we have ordered to be returned:
| 11:251 Սոյնպէս եւ երկիրք, եթէ հայրենիք, եթէ պարգեւականք եւ եթէ քսակագինք, եւ հանեալ ուրուք իցէ, հրամայեցաք զի դարձցին:

11:252 When he had informed them of all this, he requested from them a testimony of his sincerity for Armenia; and with an oath he subscribed to a covenant in their presence, with the approbation of all his magnates, to the effect that: “I shall not harbor the least resentment or desire to seek vengeance:
| 11:252 Եւ իբրեւ այսմ ամենայնի զնոսա տեղեակս առնէր, խնդրէր ի նոցանէ վկայութիւն հաւատարմութեան յերկիրն Հայոց, եւ երդմամբ յուխտ մտանէր առաջի նոցա՝ հաստատութեամբ ամենայն մեծամեծաց իւրոց, եթէ « Ոչ ինչ յիշեցից ամենեւին զքէն վրիժուցն խնդրելոյ:

11:253 Just as previously you practiced your religion in good faith, henceforth practice it even more so. But only do not withdraw from our service:
| 11:253 Որպէս ունէիք յառաջ ճշմարտութեամբ զաւրէնս ձեր, այսուհետեւ առաւել կալարուք. բայց միայն ի ծառայութենէ մերմէ մի՛ ելանէք:

11:254 All this he put in writing and made known in Armenia and many other lands which practiced the Christian religion. But secretly and deceptively he made haste to send messengers to the emperor Marcian:
| 11:254 Զայս ամենայն գրէր եւ ցուցանէր յերկիրն Հայոց եւ ի բազում յայլ աշխարհս, որ ունէին զաւրէնս քրիստոնէութեան. եւ ինքն գաղտ խորամանկեալ փութացեալ դեսպանս առաքէր առ Մարկիանոս կայսր:

11:255 When he had verified that the Romans had refused to help the Christians, either with military assistance or in any other way, he reverted to his earlier wicked views:
| 11:255 Եւ իբրեւ ստուգեալ ճշմարտեաց, եթէ Հոռոմք ի բաց կացին ձեռնտու լինել քրիստոնէութեանն ոչ զաւրու աւգնականութեամբ եւ ոչ այլ իրաւք, դարձեալ անդրէն ի նոյն յառաջին կարծիս մոլորութեանն շրջեցաւ:

11:256 Since he put the responsibility for the success of events on his own ministers, he thus assumed that they could carry out everything in accordance with his previous intentions:
| 11:256 Զի զյաջողութիւն իրացն ի ձեռն իւրոց պաշտաւնէիցն հրամայէր. եւ այնպէս ածէր զմտաւ, եթէ ըստ առաջին կարծեացն կատարեսցեն զամենայն:

11:257 But although the Armenians had received the king’s deceitfully flattering letter, which outwardly contained the good news of life but inwardly the bitterness of death, yet they were amazed at its defective reasoning and said to each other: “How brazen is his treacherous deceit! For after two and three attempts he was rebuffed, but he is not ashamed:
| 11:257 Իսկ Հայք թէպէտ եւ ընկալան զգիրն խաբեբայ ողոքանաց թագաւորին, որ ի վերոյ ունէր զաւետիս կենաց եւ ի ներքոյ զդառնութիւն մահու, զարմացեալ ընդ թերի խորհուրդսն՝ ասէին ցմիմեանս. « Քանի՜ լիրբ է խորամանկ խաբէութիւն նորա, զի երկիցս եւ երիցս զփորձ առեալ կշտամբեցաւ եւ ոչ ամաչէ:

11:258 Even though he is aware of our indissoluble unity, he is impudent and shameless nonetheless; by harassing us he intends to weaken our courage:
| 11:258 Եւ տեղեակ եղեալ մերոյ անքակ միաբանութեանս, տակաւին լրբի եւ լկնի. զհետ մտեալ՝ կամի զմեզ լքուցանել:

11:259 But should we believe his inconsistent order? What benevolence have we seen directed to all the churches in Persia:
| 11:259 Իսկ հաւատասցո՞ւք անհաստատ հրամանի նորա. զո՞ր բարեգործութիւն տեսաք առ ամենայն եկեղեցիս, որ են յաշխարհին Պարսից:

11:260 For he who is himself wicked cannot be good to another. And he who himself walks in darkness cannot guide another by the light of truth:
| 11:260 Զի որ ինքն իւր չար է, այլում բարի ոչ կարէ լինել. եւ որ ինքն ընդ խաւար գնայ, այլում ոչ առաջնորդէ ճշմարտութեան լուսով:

11:261 For just as justice does not derive from injustice, so neither does truth from falsehood; nor from a turbulent mind does there come any expectation of peace:
| 11:261 Որպէս զի չիք յանիրաւութենէ արդարութիւն, այսպէս եւ ոչ ի ստութենէ ճշմարտութիւն, սոյնպէս եւ ի խռովասէր մտաց՝ ակնկալութիւն խաղաղութեան:

11:262 However, we live by God’s power and have been strengthened by faith in the hope of Christ—who came and took from the Holy Virgin the flesh of our nature, and by uniting it with his indivisible divinity received into his own body the sufferings of our sins. In that same body he was crucified, buried, and resurrected; he appeared to many, was raised up in the presence of his disciples to his Father and sat at the right hand of the power. The same we believe to be the true God, and we wait for him to come in the Father’s glory and power to raise all the dead, to renew the old Creation, and to render summary judgment on the just and the sinners:
| 11:262 Այլ մեք ապրեալքս զաւրութեամբն Աստուծոյ, եւ հաստատեալք հաւատովքն ի յոյսն Քրիստոսի, որ եկն եւ էառ ի սուրբ կուսէն զմարմին մերոյ բնութեանս, եւ միացեալ անբաժանելի աստուածութեամբն՝ ընկալաւ զչարչարանս մերոյ մեղաց ի յիւր մարմինն, եւ նովին խաչեցաւ եւ թաղեցաւ եւ յարուցեալ երեւեցաւ բազմաց, եւ վերացաւ յանդիման աշակերտացն առ Հայր իւր, եւ նստաւ ընդ աջմէ զաւրութեանն, զսոյն հաւատամք Աստուած ճշմարիտ, եւ նմին ակն ունիմք, որ փառաւք Հաւր եւ զաւրութեամբ գայ յարուցանել զամենայն ննջեցեալս, եւ նորոգել զհնութիւն արարածոց, առնել համառաւտս յաւիտենից ի մէջ արդարոց եւ մեղաւորաց:

11:263 We shall not be deceived like children, go astray like the ignorant, or be tricked like the witless; rather, we are ready for every test:
| 11:263 Ոչ պատրիմք իբրեւ զտղայս, եւ ոչ մոլորիմք իբրեւ զանտեղեակս, եւ ոչ խաբիմք իբրեւ զտգէտս, այլ պատրաստ եմք ամենայն փորձութեանց:

11:264 We beseech God and ceaselessly beg his great mercy that we may complete what we have begun with valor and not with cowardice:
| 11:264 Եւ աղաչեմք զԱստուած, եւ անդադար խնդրեմք ի բազում ողորմութենէ նորա, զի յորում սկսաք՝ ի նմին եւ կատարեսցուք քաջութեամբ, եւ ոչ վատութեամբ:

11:265 For already East and West have come to know that you oppose God and pointlessly kill us despite all our services:
| 11:265 Զի արդ արեւելք եւ արեւմուտք գիտացին զձեր աստուածամարտդ լինել, եւ զմեզ ի զուր սպանանել ի վերայ ամենայն վաստակոցն մերոց:

11:266 Heaven with its angels and earth with its inhabitants bear us witness that we have not failed in our duty even in our thoughts. Yet instead of rendering us gifts and blessings you wish to deprive us of the true life, which is impossible and will never occur:
| 11:266 Վկայեն մեզ երկինք երկնաւորաւք եւ երկիր երկրաւորաւք, եթէ չեմք ինչ մեղուցեալի միտս մեր անգամ. եւ ի վերայ պարգեւաց եւ բարիս առնելոյ մեզ՝ զճշմարիտ կեանս կամիք հանել ի մէնջ, որում չիք հնար, եւ այլ մի՛ լիցի:

11:267 Should we now trust his unworthy mouth, which forces heinous apostasy? Will he today become the preacher of good tidings without doing any good deed:
| 11:267 Իսկ արդ հաւատասցո՞ւք անարժան բերանոյ նորա, որ ստիպէր չարաչար յուրացութիւն, եւ այսաւր առանց մի ինչ բարիս գործելոյ լինիցի՞ նա քարոզիչ աւետեաց:

11:268 We are unable today suddenly to accept the involuntary confession of one who has blasphemed Christ and forced believers to deny him:
| 11:268 Եւ որ հայհոյէրն զՔրիստոս, եւ ուրացուցանէր ի նմանէ զհաւատացեալս, այսաւր ակամայ խոստովանութեանն ոչ կարեմք վաղվաղակի յանձն առնուլ:

11:269 He who swore in his vain and erring cult to bring every evil upon the ministers of the church now has come to offer sham thanks, desiring thereby to pour out all his wickedness on us:
| 11:269 Եւ որ երդնոյրն ի սնոտի պաշտամունս իւրոյ մոլորութեանն՝ անցուցանել զամենայն չարչարանս ընդ պաշտաւնեայս եկեղեցւոյ, արդ եկեալ գողանալով գոհութիւն մատուցանէ, եւ այնու կամի զամենայն չարութիւն իւր ի մեզ հեղուլ:

11:270 We do not believe him, nor shall we accept his false command:
| 11:270 Ոչ այդմ հաւատամք, եւ ոչ զսուտ հրամանդ յանձն առնումք:
|
11:271 But when he realized that he could not break the firmness of their unity, then he dispatched from his presence the old man full of bitterness, in whom lurked Satan with all his power, and who had perpetrated much slaughter. The food he had craved since childhood was the pure flesh of the saints, and the drink of which he was never sated was the blood of the innocent:
| 11:271 Իսկ նա իբրեւ գիտաց, եթէ ոչ կարեմ քակել զհաստատութիւն միաբանելոցն, յայնժամ քակեաց յինքենէ զծերն լի դառնութեամբ, յորում հանգուցեալ էր սատանայ զաւրութեամբ իւրով, եւ բազում գործեալ էր նորա նախճիրս. որոյ կերակուր կամաց իւրոց էր ի մանկութենէ անարատ մարմին սրբոց, եւ ըմպելի անյագութեան նորին՝ արիւն անմեղացն:

11:272 To the evil of this man he added his own lethal command: he gathered under his command troops from every land and sent with him many companies of elephants:
| 11:272 Յաւելոյր եւս ի վերայ չարութեան նորա եւ զիւր մահաբեր հրամանն. գունդս գունդս յամենայն աշխարհացն գումարէր ընդ նմա, եւ բազում երամակս փղաց յղէր ընդ նմա:

11:273 Approaching the borders of Armenia, he entered the town of Paytakaran and spread all his troops around the city in careful preparation for his malicious plans:
| 11:273 Հասեալ մերձ ի սահմանս Հայոց՝ մտանէր ի քաղաքն Փայտակարան, եւ զզաւրսն ամենայն սփռէր տարածանէր շուրջ զքաղաքաւն առ ի զգուշութիւն պատրաստութեան իւրոյ չարահնար խորհրդոցն:

11:274 The old poisonous snake entered the fortified retreat, very deceitfully disguising himself so as not to be feared. He threatened the distant by fearful roaring and those nearby hissing and crawling like a snake:
| 11:274 Եւ յամուր որջն մտեալ հին վիշապն չարաթոյն, եւ բազում կեղծաւորութեամբ զինքն թաքուցանելով յաներկիւղութիւն, հեռաւորացն ահագին ձայնիւ սաստէր. եւ ի մերձաւորսն իբրեւ զաւձ սողալով փչէր:

11:275 He was the prince and commander of the whole Persian Empire. His name was Mihrnerseh, and there was no one at all who could escape his clutches:
| 11:275 Սա էր իշխան եւ հրամանատար ամենայն տէրութեանն Պարսից, որում անուն էր Միհրներսեհ, եւ չէր ոք ամենեւին, որ իշխէր ըստ ձեռն նորա ելանել:
|
11:276 Not only the greatest and the least, but even the king himself obeyed his command; and now he had undertaken the latter’s sinister schemes:
| 11:276 Եւ ոչ միայն մեծամեծք եւ փոքունք, այլ եւ ինքն թագաւորն հրամանի նորա անսայր. որոյ եւ ձախող իրացն իսկ բուռն հարեալ էր նորա:
