12:276 The bishop note: “And since you have so learned for sure, why do you question me a second time:

12:278 The bishop note: “You do not wish to learn from me what is advantageous to your own well-being, but your real desire is for my blood:
| 12:278 Եպիսկոպոսն ասէ. « Ոչ զաւգուտ կենաց քոց կամիս ուսանել յինէն, այլ արեան իմոյ ցանկան միտք քո:

12:279 Denshapuh note: “I am not a bloodthirsty beast, but I seek vengeance for the gods’ dishonor:
| 12:279 Դենշապուհ ասէ. « Չեմ գազան արիւնախանձ, այլ վրէժխնդիր եմ աստուածոցն անարգութեան:

12:280 The bishop note: “You call the dumb elements gods, and yet you wish to slay men who are in your own image. You will have to suffer vengeance with your king at the incorruptible tribunal of God:
| 12:280 Եպիսկոպոսն ասէ. « Զտարերս համերս աստուածս անուանես, եւ զպատկերակիցս քո մարդիկ խողխողել կամիս. տալոց հատուցանելոց ես վրէժ թագաւորաւն քով յանկաշառ ատենին Աստուծոյ:

12:281 What in your evil” desires you wish to hear from me I shall tell you:
| 12:281 Եւ զոր քո չար կամաւքդ կամիս լսել յինէն, զայդ ես ասեմ քեզ:
|
12:282 I did indeed destroy the fire temple and inflict the bastinado on the magi, and the impure utensils that were in the temple I threw into the lake:
| 12:282 Զտունն արդարեւ ես աւերեցի, եւ զմոգսն չարչարեցի գանիւ, եւ զկահ պղծութեան, որ ի տանն էր, ի ծովն ես ընկեցի:

12:283 But who can kill the fire? For the all-wise Creator of Creation took care at the beginning and rendered the nature of the four elements imperishable:
| 12:283 Այլ զկրակ ո՞վ կարէ սպանանել. քանզի ամենիմաստ Արարիչն արարածոց հոգ խնամոյ տարեալ յառաջագոյն՝ անմահս հաստատեաց զբնութիւն չորից նիւթոցս:

12:284 So then, kill the air, if you can; or destroy the earth so that it not bring forth grass; cut the throat of the river so that it dies:
| 12:284 Աղէ սպան դու զաւդ՝ եթէ կարես, եւ կամ ապականեա զհող՝ զի մի՛ բուսուսցէ զդալարի, փողոտեա զգետ՝ զի մեռցի:

12:285 If you can do these three things, then you can kill fire:
| 12:285 Եթէ զայդ երեսին կարես առնել, ապա եւ զկրակ կարես սպանանել:
|
12:286 Now if our Architect united the indissolubility of the four elements—so the nature of fire is found in stones and in iron and in all tangible elements—why do you falsely slander me by saying, ’You killed the fire? ’:
| 12:286 Ապա եթէ ճարտարապետն մեր միաբանեաց զչորից տարերցդ զանքակութիւն, ահա եւ գտանի բնութիւն հրոյ ի քարինս եւ յերկաթս եւ յամենայն տարերս զննելիս, ընդէ՞ր ստութեամբ զրպարտես զիս, թէ դու զկրակ սպաներ:

12:287 Then kill the warmth of the sun, for it has a portion of fire; or give a command that fire not be struck from iron:
| 12:287 Աղէ դու սպան զջերմութիւն արեգական, զի ունի նա մասն հրոյ, եւ կամ տուր հրաման՝ զի մի՛ թափեսցի հուր յերկաթոյ:

12:288 That which breathes, moves, travels, eats, and drinks, also dies. When did you see fire traveling, or speaking, or knowing:
| 12:288 Մեռանի այն, որ շնչէն եւ շարժի եւ գնայ եւ ուտէ եւ ըմպէ. ե՞րբ տեսեր դու զկրակ գնայուն կամ խաւսուն կամ գիտուն:

12:289 Do you then admit that what you have not seen living has died:
| 12:289 Արդ զոր կենդանի քո չէ տեսեալ՝ մեռեա՞լ խոստովանիս:
|
12:290 How much more unpardonable is your impiety than that of all the heathen, who are more knowledgeable than you. For although they have strayed from the true God, they do not confess dumb elements to be God:
| 12:290 Քանի՛ անթողլի է ամբարշտութիւնդ ձեր քան զամենայն հեթանոսաց, որ գիտնագոյնք են քան զձեզ. որ թէպէտ եւ ի ճշմարիտն Աստուծոյ մոլորեալ են, զանխաւս տարերս աստուած ոչ խոստովանին:

12:291 So, if you ignorantly say the nature of fire is destructible, these created things do not agree with you, because it is mingled in them all:
| 12:291 Արդ եթէ դու անգիտութեամբ կորնչելի ասես զբնութիւն հրոյ, ոչ առնուն քեզ յանձն արարածքս. քանզի խառն է դա յամենեցունց:

12:292 Denshapuh note: “I shall in no way enter into a debate and critique with you concerning the nature of created things. But admit to me: did you extinguish the fire, or not:
| 12:292 Դենշապուհ ասէ. « Ոչ ինչ մտանեմ ես ընդ քեզ ի պայքար քննութեան վասն բնութեան արարածոցս. այլ խոստովանեա ինձ, եթէ դո՞ւ անցուցեր զկրակն, եթէ ոչ:

12:293 The blessed one replied, saying: “Since you did not wish to become a disciple of the truth, I shall expound the will of your father Satan:
| 12:293 Պատասխանի ետ երանելին եւ ասէ. « Որովհետեւ ոչ կամեցար լինել աշակերտ ճշմարտութեանն, ասացից զկամս հաւրն քո սատանայի:

12:294 I myself entered your fire-temple and saw standing there the impious ministers of your vain religion and the fire-holder blazing in front of them full of fire:
| 12:294 Ես ինձէն իսկ մտի ի կրակատունն ձեր եւ տեսի, զի կային պաշտաւնեայք ամբարշտութեանն սնոտի կարծեացն ձերոց, եւ կրակարանն լի հրով առաջի նոցա բորբոքեալ այրէր:

12:295 I questioned them with words and not the rod: ’What in your own minds do you think of the fire of this cult? ’:
| 12:295 Հարցի ցնոսա բանիւք եւ ոչ գանիւ, թէ զի՞նչ համարիք ի միտս ձեր զկրակ պաշտամանս այսորիկ:

12:296 They replied:
| 12:296 Ետուն պատասխանի եւ ասեն:

12:297 ’We do not know. But this much we understand, that it is the custom of our ancestors and the strict command of the king. ’:
| 12:297 Մեք ինչ ոչ գիտեմք. բայց այսչափ ինչ իմանամք, զի սովորութիւն է նախնեացն եւ հրաման բուռն թագաւորին:

12:298 Again, I spoke to them: ’And what do you understand the nature of your fire to be? Do you suppose it to be a creator or created? ’:
| 12:298 Ասեմ դարձեալ ցնոսա. Եւ զբնութիւն կրակիդ զի՜նչ իմանայք. արարի՞չ կարծէք, թէ արարած:

12:299 They all said in unison: ’We do not recognize it as a creator, nor as one that gives rest to those who have labored:
| 12:299 Ասեն ամենեքեան միաբան. Արարիչ մեք զդա ոչ գիտեմք, նաեւ ոչ հանգուցիչ աշխատելոց:
|
12:300 Our hands have become calloused from the axe and our backs worn from carrying wood. Our eyes are bleary with tears from the acridity of its smoke, and our faces are sooty from the heavy dampness of its fumes:
| 12:300 Ձեռք մեր փապարեալ են ի կացնի, եւ ողունք մեր տեռեալ են ի փայտակրի. աչք մեր գիջացեալ են արտասուաւք ի կծութենէ ծխոյ դորա, եւ երեսք մեր մրոտեալ են ի խոնաւութեանց թանձրութենէ նորին ծխոյ:
