7:151 While the blessed Theodosius was questioning the whole Senate, anxious to find a peaceable solution to the matter and greatly concerned lest the churches of the East be ravaged by the impious heathen, at that very time the end of his life suddenly befell him. This put a serious obstruction in the way of procuring help:
| 7:151 Եւ մինչդեռ երանելին Թէոդոս հարցանէր զամենայն սինկղիտոսն, եւ հնարս իրացն կամէր գտանել խաղաղութեամբ, եւ հոգ տանէր մեծաւ յաւժարութեամբ, զի մի՛ եկեղեցիքն արեւելից յափշտակեսցին յանաւրէն հեթանոսացն, ի նմին ժամանակի անդէն վաղվաղակի հասանէր վախճան կատարածի կենաց նորա, եւ կարի չար խափանումն լինէր գործոյն աւգնականութեան:

7:152 In his stead the emperor Marcianus came to the throne. The king was influenced by his evil counselors Anatolius, who was the commander-in-chief, and Elpharios the Syrian—both vile and wicked men, and ungodly to boot—so he was unwilling to heed the united pact of the Armenians, who with all their strength were opposing the wickedness of the heathens:
| 7:152 Եւ թագաւորէ փոխանակ նորա Մարկիանոս կայսր, եւ ի ձեռն վատթար արանց խրատտուաց իւրոց ծառայից, Անատոլեայ՝ որ սպարապետն էր, եւ Եղփարիոս ասորի, երկոքեան անարգք եւ վատթար արանց, միանգամայն եւ անաստուածք, ի նոցա բանս ելեալ թագաւորն, ոչ կամէր անսալ միաբան ուխտին Հայոց, որ ամենայն ուժովն իւրեանց ընդդէմ կացեալ էին չարութեանն հեթանոսաց:

7:153 But this ignoble man thought it better to preserve the pact with the heathen for the sake of terrestrial peace, than to join in war for the Christian covenant:
| 7:153 Իսկ անարիս այս լաւ համարէր պահել զուխտն հեթանոսաց վասն մարմնական խաղաղութեան՝ քան պատերազմակից լինել ուխտին քրիստոնէութեան:

7:154 Therefore, he quickly dispatched that same Elpharios as ambassador to the Persian king and contracted a firm pact with him that he would not support the Armenian forces with troops, arms, or any form of assistance:
| 7:154 Վասն այսորիկ փութացաւ արձակեաց դեսպանս առ թագաւորն Պարսից զնոյն Եղփարիոսն, եւ եմուտ ընդ նմա յուխտ հաստատութեան՝ ձեռնթափ լինել ի զաւրացն Հայոց զաւրու եւ զինու եւ ամենայն աւգնականութեամբ:

7:155 When this had been so concluded and hope of human help had vanished, the holy bishops began to reassure themselves and the Armenian army:
| 7:155 Եւ իբրեւ այս այսպէս հաստատեցաւ, եւ հատաւ աւգնականութիւն յուսոյ նոցա ի մարդկանէ, դարձեալ սուրբ եպիսկոպոսքն քաջալերել սկսան զանձինս եւ զաւրսն Հայոց:

7:156 Although they were aware of their own small numbers and of the alliance of the two kings, they were not discouraged or shaken, but were emboldened in their former pact and note: “We are ready to kill and to die. It is easy for God to work through a few the business of many, and through despised persons to accomplish the greatest deeds:
| 7:156 Թէպէտ եւ հայէին յիւրեանց սակաւութիւնն եւ յերկոցունց թագաւորացն միաբանութիւն, ոչ ինչ վատասրտեալ դողային, այլ ըստ առաջին ուխտին խիզախէին եւ ասէին. « Պատրաստ եմք ի սպանանել եւ ի մեռանել. դիւրին է Աստուծոյ սակաւուք զբազմաց գործ գործել, եւ անարգաւք զմեծամեծ իրս կատարել:

7:157 Although they did not have a king as leader nor any support from abroad, nevertheless supported by their own valor and the consolation of their holy teachers, all the nobles immediately assembled in one spot with the troops from each one’s house. There were also many additional cavalry there from the royal house:
| 7:157 Թէպէտ եւ ոչ ունէին թագաւոր առաջնորդ, եւ ոչ արտաքուստ աւգնական զոք յաւտարաց, սակայն անձանց առաքինութեամբ եւ սուրբ վարդապետացն մխիթարութեամբ՝ համագունդ ամենայն նախարարքն զաւրաւքն իւրեանց յիւրաքանչիւր տանէ ի մի վայր գային հասանէին վաղվաղակի. բազում եւ այլ այրուձի, որ յարքունի տանէ անտի էր:

7:158 They divided all their forces into three sections:
| 7:158 Եւ զամենայն զաւրսն յերիս գունդս բաժանէին:

7:159 The first section they gave to Nershapuh Rmbosean, and charged him with defending the country near the borders of Atrpatakan:
| 7:159 Զգունդն առաջին տային ցՆերշապուհ Ռմբոսեան, եւ գումարէին զնա պահապան աշխարհին, մերձ ի սահմանս Ատրպատական աշխարհին:

7:160 The second section they entrusted to Vardan, the Armenian general, with orders to cross the Georgian frontier against the marzpan of Chor, who had come to destroy the churches of Albania:
| 7:160 Եւ զգունդն երկրորդ տային ի ձեռն Վարդանայ զաւրավարին Հայոց՝ անցանել ընդ սահմանս Վրաց ի վերայ մարզպանին Ճորայ, որ եկեալ էր աւերել զեկեղեցիսն Աղուանից:

7:161 The third section they entrusted to Vasak, the prince of Siunik, who in his innermost heart had not abandoned his covenant with the heathen:
| 7:161 Իսկ զգունդն երրորդ տային ի ձեռս Վասակայ իշխանին Սիւնեաց, որ ոչ ի բաց կացեալ էր յուխտէն հեթանոսաց ըստ ներքին խորհրդոցն իւրոց:

7:162 He chose and took with him those whom he knew to be weak in their faith:
| 7:162 Ընտրեաց եւ էառ ընդ իւր՝ զորոց գիտէր զթուլութիւն հաւատոց նոցա:

7:163 The prince of the Bagratunik with his forces:

7:164 The prince of the Khorkhorunik with his forces:

7:170 And many other troops from the royal house he brought over to his side and some lesser nobles from other families:

7:171 With deceitful cunning he lay in wait in the strongholds of his own land with the fictitious excuse that he would rapidly move to attack the Persian army in order to expel them from Albania:
| 7:171 Եւ խորամանկ խաբէութեամբ դարանամուտ լինէր յամուրս իւրոյ աշխարհին, ի պատճառս կեղծաւորութեան՝ եթէ ընդ ճապուկ անդր անցանէ ի վերայ գնդին Պարսից՝ հալածականս առնել յաշխարհէն Աղուանից:

7:172 But from his securely hidden lair he quickly sent messengers to the Persian army: “Behold I have broken the unity of the Armenians’ covenant and have split their army over three areas:
| 7:172 Իսկ նա յամրածածուկ հաւալոցէն ճեպով դեսպանս արձակէր առ գունդն Պարսից. « Ահաւադիկ քակեցի զմիաբանութիւն ուխտին Հայոց, եւ ընդ երիս կողմանս զգունդն քակեալ բաժանեցի:

7:173 The first section I have sent far off to the regions of Her and Zarevand; the second section is under my control and I shall not allow them to do any harm to the royal army:
| 7:173 Զգունդն առաջին հեռացուցի ի կողմանս Հերայ եւ Զարեւանդայ. եւ գունդս երկրորդ ընդ իմով ձեռամբ է, որոց ոչ ինչ տամ վնաս առնել զաւրաց արքունի:

7:174 And all the other fighting men in the country I have dispersed and scattered throughout all the central part of the land:
| 7:174 Եւ զայլ ամենայն, որ այր կռուոյ յաշխարհի աստ գտանէր, ցանեցի ցրուեցի ընդ ամենայն միջոցս աշխարհիս:

7:175 The third section I sent to Albania under Vardan, a small force and not numerous:
| 7:175 Բայց զգունդն երրորդ արարի ընդ Վարդանայ յԱղուանս՝ սակաւաձեռն եւ ոչ բազմաթիւ:
