8:176 Face him boldly and do not hesitate at all to give battle. I know that they will be defeated by your great force:

8:177 This he wrote and explained to the marzpan, whose name was Sebukht:

8:178 When he heard all this encouraging news from Vasak and was assured that the Armenian general was advancing on him with a small number of troops, he did not remain in the region of Ghor, but gathered all the host of his army and rapidly crossed the great river called Kura. He encountered him near the borders of Georgia, opposite the city of Khaḷkhaḷ, which was the Albanian kings’ winter residence:
| 8:178 Իսկ նա իբրեւ լուաւ զայս ամենայն զքաջալերս ի Վասակայ, եւ ստուգեալ հաստատեաց ի միտս իւր, եթէ սակաւաձեռն գնդաւ գայ սպարապետն Հայոց ի վերայ նորա, ոչ եկաց մնաց ի կողմանս Ճորայ, այլ կուտեաց զամենայն բազմութիւն զաւրու իւրոյ, եւ փութանակի անցանէր ընդ մեծ գետն Կուր անուն, եւ պատահէր նմա մերձ ի սահմանս Վրաց հանդէպ Խաղխաղ քաղաքի, որ ձմերոց էր թագաւորացն Աղուանից:

8:179 After crossing with all his troops, he drew them up to enclose the entire plain; they were armed and equipped in total readiness for battle against the Armenian army:
| 8:179 Անցանէր բաւանդակէր ամենայն զաւրաւք իւրովք. ռազմ արարեալ զբոլոր մեծութիւն դաշտին ի ներքս փակէր. զինեալք եւ վառեալք ամենայն պատրաստութեամբ ի մարտ պատերազմի ընդդէմ գնդին Հայոց:

8:180 Now when the valiant Vardan and all the troops with him saw the host of the heathen army in readiness and looked at their own small number—although they were very much less numerous than the enemy, they were not at all dismayed by their great number, but together in unison raised their hands to heaven in supplication, saying:
| 8:180 Իսկ քաջն Վարդան եւ ամենայն զաւրքն, որ ընդ նմա էին, իբրեւ տեսին զբազմութիւն պատրաստութեան գնդին հեթանոսաց, հայեցան եւ յիւրեանց սակաւութիւնն. թէպէտ եւ կարի յոյժ նուազունք էին քան զնոսա, ոչ ինչ զանգիտեցին առ ի յոյժ բազմութենէն, այլ առ հասարակ միաբան համբարձին յերկինս զձեռս իւրեանց, աղաղակէին եւ ասէին:

8:181 Judge, Lord, those who judge us; fight with those who fight against us; with your arms and shield help us. Shake and make tremble the vast host of these impious ones:
| 8:181 Դատեա, Տէր, զայնոսիկ, ոյք դատին զմեզ. մարտիր ընդ այնոսիկ, որ մարտնչինս ընդ մեզ. զինու եւ ասպարաւ քով աւգնեա մեզ:

8:182 Scatter and overthrow the evil unity of your enemies before your great saving sign; and give into the hands of these few the glory of victory over that immense host:
| 8:182 Շարժեա եւ դողացո զգունդագունդ բազմութիւն անաւրինացս. ցրուեա եւ վատնեա զչար միաբանութիւն թշնամեաց քոց առաջի քոյոյ փրկական մեծի նշանիս, եւ տուր ի ձեռն սակաւուցս զքաջութիւն յաղթութեան ի վերայ անհնարին բազմութեանս:

8:183 Not in the pride of vainglory for profitless exploits or with an avaricious greed for acquiring transitory grandeur do we make this prayer, but in order that all those who do not heed the preaching of the Holy Gospel may realize and know that you are Lord of life and death, and that through you come victory and defeat:
| 8:183 Ոչ ի պարծանս սնոտի փառասիրութեան անաւգուտ վաստակոց ինչ աղաչեմք, կամ յագահութիւն ընչասիրութեան զանցաւոր մեծութիւն կապտելոյ, այլ զի ծանիցեն եւ գիտասցեն ամենեքեան այնոքիկ, որ ոչն հնազանդին սուրբ աւետարանին քարոզութեան, եթէ դու ես Տէր կենաց եւ մահու, եւ ի ձեռն քո է յաղթութիւն եւ պարտութիւն:

8:184 We are ready to die for love of you; but if it happens that we slaughter them, we shall be avengers of the truth:
| 8:184 Եւ մեք պատրաստ եմք ի մեռանել վասն քո սիրոյդ. եւ եթէ սպանանել եւս հասանէ զնոսա, եղիցուք վրէժխնդիրք ճշմարտութեանն:

8:185 Saying this, they closed ranks and attacked. Having broken the right wing, they threw it back onto the left. They put all to the sword over the face of the plain and turned them in flight as far as the secure regions of the forests along the deep precipices of the Lopnos River:
| 8:185 Եւ զայս ասելով՝ խումբ արարեալ յարձակէին, եւ զաջ թեւն բեկեալ՝ զձախոյ կողմամբն արկեալ, սրոյ ճարակ զամենեսեան տային ընդ երեսս դաշտին, եւ փախստական առնէին մինչեւ յամուր տեղիս մայրեացն առ խորագոյն դարիւքն Լոփնաս գետոյ:

8:186 There some warriors of royal blood, related to the king of Baḷas, offered resistance; they unseated from his horse and killed one of the Armenian nobles, Mush of the Dimaksean family, and wounded Gazrik:
| 8:186 Ուր ընդդէմ դարձեալ թագաւորազանց ոմանց Բաղասական արքայի, ընկեցին զոմն ի ձիոյ ի նախարարացն Հայոց, ի գնդէն Դիմաքսենից զՄուշ սպանին, եւ զԳազրիկ վիրաւորեցին:

8:187 At that spot Arshavir Arsharuni raised his eyes, roared like a lion, and attacked wildly, striking and slaying Vurk, the valiant brother of the king of the Lpink. Many of his aides-de-camp he killed with him:
| 8:187 Յայնմ տեղւոջ դէտակն ի վեր ամբառնայր Արշաւիր Արշարունի, գոչէր առիւծաբար եւ յարձակէր վարազաբար, հարկանէր եւ սատակէր զՎուրկն քաջ զեղբայր թագաւորին Լփնաց, եւ զբազում համհարզս նորին ընդ նմին սատակէր:

8:188 Thus, they all alike struck each man his opponent to the ground:
| 8:188 Եւ այնպէս ամենեքեան առհասարակ այր զախոյեան իւր յերկիր կործանէր:

8:189 And from the great impetuosity of the attack, there were many more drowned in the river than were felled by the sword on dry land:
| 8:189 Եւ առ յոյժ յանդուգն յարձակմանն յոլովագոյն այն էր զոր գետամոյնս առնէին քան զանկեալսն սրոյ ի ցամաքի:

8:190 From the great number of fallen corpses the pure waters of the river turned to blood, and none of them at all was able to escape and hide in the thick forests of the plains:
| 8:190 Եւ ի բազմութենէ դիականցն անկելոց՝ յստակ ջուրք գետոյն յարիւն դառնային, եւ ոչ գտանէր ոք ամենեւին ի նոցանէ ապրեալ եւ թագուցեալ յանտառախիտ մայրիս դաշտացն:

8:191 But one of the enemy soldiers crossed the great river on the back of his horse with his armor. Saved from the battle by the skin of his teeth, he brought the sad news to the remnants of the army who had fled into the great capital:
| 8:191 Բայց մի ոմն ի զաւրականէ թշնամեացն՝ զինու հանդերձ ելեալ ի նիւս երիվարին անցանէր ընդ մեծ գետն, մազապուր պրծեալ ի պատերազմէն՝ գոյժ տանէր ի մնացեալ բուն բանակն, որք փախստական անկանէին ի մեծ շահաստանն:

8:192 Then the Armenian troops, having won a great victory, turned to plunder the dead. They gathered much booty from the enemies’ camp and stripped the fallen corpses. They accumulated much silver and gold, armor and decorations of valiant men and brave horses:
| 8:192 Յայնմ ժամանակի զաւրքն Հայոց կատարելով զմեծ գործ պատերազմին՝ դիակապուտ դառնային, ժողովէին զբազում աւար բանակին, եւ կողոպտէին զանկեալ դիակունսն. եւ կուտէին բազում արծաթ եւ ոսկի, զզէնս եւ զզարդս զարի արանց եւ զքաջ երիվարաց:

8:193 Then they attacked with no little ardor the fortresses and towns which the Persians held in Albania. After a fierce struggle they set fire to their strongholds, and wherever they found them in various fortresses they put to the sword numerous magi who had come ready to bring ruin to the country; these they threw out as carrion for the birds of heaven and beasts of the earth:
| 8:193 Դարձեալ յարձակէին ոչ սակաւ քաջութեամբ ի վերայ բերդիցն եւ քաղաքաց, զոր ունէին Պարսիկքն յաշխարհին Աղուանից, հզաւրապէս մարտնչելով այրէին զամուրս արգելանաց նոցա, եւ զերամս երամս մոգացն, զոր պատրաստական ածեալ էին աշխարհին գայթակղութիւն, ո՛ւր եւ գտանէին յամուրս ամուրս վայրացն, սրոյ ճարակ տուեալ՝ դնէին գէշ թռչնոց երկնից եւ գազանաց երկրի:

8:194 They purified the sites of all impure sacrifices, and saved and delivered the churches from their terrible affliction:
| 8:194 Սրբէին զտեղիսն յամենայն պղծագործ զոհիցն, եւ փրկեալ ազատէին զեկեղեցիսն յանհնարին նեղութենէն:

8:195 Many of the Albanian nobles and of the general peasantry for the sake of God’s name had scattered and spread out among the fortresses of the Caucasus Mountains; when they saw the success of the enterprise which God had effected through the Armenian army, they too assembled and joined their forces. Together and in concert they shared in the heroic task:
| 8:195 Եւ բազումք ի նախարարացն Աղուանից եւ յամենայն շինականացն, որք վասն անուանն Աստուծոյ ցրուեալ եւ վատնեալ էին յամուրս լերանց Կապկոհի, իբրեւ տեսին զաջողութիւն գործոյն, զոր կատարէր Աստուած ի ձեռն գնդին Հայոց, գային ժողովէին եւ նոքա, եւ խառնէին ի զաւրս նոցա, եւ միաբանք եւ հաւասարք կցորդք լինէին գործոյն նահատակութեան:

8:196 Then they marched against the pass of the Huns, which the Persians were holding in force. They captured and destroyed the fortifications, slaughtered the troops quartered inside, and made over the pass to Vahan, who was from the royal family of Albania:
| 8:196 Խաղային գնային այնուհետեւ ի վերայ պահակին Հոնաց, զոր ունէին բռնութեամբ Պարսիկքն. առնուին քանդէին զպահակն, եւ կոտորէին զզաւրսն, որ ի ներքս բնակեալ էին, եւ զդուռնն տային ի ձեռն Վահանայ, որ էր յազգէ թագաւորացն Աղուանից:

8:197 During all these brave exploits not a single one of them fell wounded, save one blessed man who died like a hero in the great battle:
| 8:197 Եւ յայսր ամենայն քաջութեան վերայ ոչ ոք անկեալ վիրաւորեցաւ ամենեւին ի նոցանէ, բայց ի միոյ երանելւոյ, որ կատարեցաւ նահատակութեամբ ի մեծ պատերազմին:

8:198 Then the man to whom they had entrusted the pass they sent as ambassador to the land of the Huns and to many other barbarian nations who were allied with the Huns in order to come to an understanding with them and make a pact that the alliance would be kept indissoluble:
| 8:198 Եւ անդէն ի նմին տեղւոջ զայրն՝ որում զդուռնն յանձն արարին՝ զնոյն դեսպան արձակեցին յաշխարհն Հոնաց, եւ ի բազում յայլ ազգս բարբարոսաց, որ համագործք էին Հոնաց աշխարհին, բանս դնել ընդ նոսա եւ ուխտ հաստատել՝ անքակութեամբ ունել զմիաբանութիւնն:

8:199 When these nations heard all that had occurred, they immediately rushed to the spot and saw with their own eyes the victory that had been won:
| 8:199 Իսկ նոքա իբրեւ զայն ամենայն լուան, փութապէս վաղվաղակի հասանէին ի տեղին, եւ ականատեսք լինէին գործոյն յաղթութեան:

8:200 They did not hesitate to enter into a pact with an oath in accordance with the ritual of their own religion; they also took a Christian oath to keep a firm alliance with them:
| 8:200 Եւ ոչ ինչ յապաղեցին երդմամբ յուխտ մտանել ըստ կարգի իւրեանց աւրինաց, յանձն առին եւ զերդումն քրիստոնէից՝ պահել ընդ նոսա հաստատութեամբ զմիաբանութիւն:
