7:151 But now I put you under oath to the immortal gods. First summon before you that embittered old man to see if he can be persuaded by friendly means and repent and regret their sorcery. Treat him honorably in accordance with his former rank, and let no one know anything of his disgrace:
| 7:151 Այլ այժմ իմ է քեզ երդումն տուեալ յանմահ դիսն. նախ զդառնացեալ ծերն կոչեա առաջի քո. եթէ հաւանեսցի սիրով, եւ զղջացեալ ապաշաւեսցէ զկախարդութիւնս նոցա, մեծարեսջիր զնա պատուով ըստ առաջին կարգին, եւ մի՛ ոք գիտասցէ զթշնամանս նորա ամենեւին:

7:152 Then if he is not persuaded and does not wish to obey your orders, bring many accusations against him from the country, so that he may be suspected of treachery in affairs of state. Bring a public suit against him and banish him beyond Kuran and Makuran. There cast him into a dungeon where he may suffer a miserable death:
| 7:152 Ապա թէ ոչ հաւանեսցի եւ ոչ կամեսցի անսալ բանից քոց, յարուսջիր ի վերայ նորա բազում ամբաստանս յաշխարհէ անտի, զի վնասակար գտցի յիրս արքունի. եւ աշխարհաւ փուրսիշն ի վերայ յարուսջիր, եւ շկաւթակ արասջիր յայնկոյս քան զԿուրան եւ զՄակուրան. եւ անդ ընկեցեալ զնա ի վիրապ մի, եւ ընկալցի զմահ թշուառութեան:

7:153 And bring a rapid end to life in this world for those of another religion lest they overthrow the religion of our land:
| 7:153 Եւ զայլադենսն փութանակի կարճեա ի կենաց աշխարհիս, զի մի՛ դղրդեսցեն զաւրէնս մերոյ աշխարհիս:
|
7:154 For if they have made a disciple of the learned chief-magus so quickly, how will ignorant men be able to resist their deceitful trickery:
| 7:154 Զի եթէ զճարտար մոգպետն այնպէս արագ աշակերտեցին, տգէտ մարդիկ զիա՞րդ կարասցեն կալ առաջի նոցա պատիր խաբէութեանն:

7:155 Then Denshapuh went and sat in tribunal outside the camp, as we said, twelve leagues distant:
| 7:155 Արդ ել նստաւ Դենշապուհ արտաքոյ բանակին յատենի, որպէս ասացաք, հեռի երկոտասան հրասախաւ:

7:156 He questioned the chief-magus, saying: “I have received authority in your case, not merely to question you verbally but also to inflict all forms of torments:
| 7:156 Հարցանէր ցմոգպետն եւ ասէր. « Իշխանութիւն առի վասն քո՝ ո՛չ միայն բանիւ հարցանել, այլ եւ ամենայն հարուածովք տանջանաց:

7:157 But before I lay hands on you—receive honors, disdain ignominy, and spare your worthy white hairs:
| 7:157 Մինչչեւ ձեռն արկեալ է իմ ի քեզ, ընկալ զմեծարանս եւ արհամարհեա զանարգանս, եւ խնայեա ի պատուական ալիսդ:

7:158 Abandon this Christianity, which you did not originally hold, and return to magism, as you were a teacher thereof for many:
| 7:158 Թող անդր ի բաց զքրիստոնէութիւնդ՝ զոր ոչ ունէիր ի բնէ, եւ դարձիր անդրէն ի մոգութիւնն, որպէս զի վարդապետ իսկ էիր բազմաց:

7:159 The blessed one replied: “I beg you, my lord who previously was considered in my eyes as a blood brother but today as a total enemy, do not pity me from your former affection but carry out against me the cruel will of your king. Just as you have received authority over me, so judge me:
| 7:159 Ետ պատասխանի երանելին եւ ասէ. « Աղաչեմ զքեզ, տէր, որ յառաջ իբրեւ զհարազատ եղբայր համարեալ էիր յաչս իմ, եւ այսաւր թշնամի կատարեալ, մի՛ ըստ առաջին սիրոյն գթար դու յիս, այլ կատարեա ի վերայ իմ զկամս չարութեան թագաւորին ձերոյ. եւ որպէս առեր իշխանութիւն ի վերայ իմ՝ դատեա զիս:

7:160 When Denshapuh saw that he set the royal threats at naught, had no respect for persuasion, and wished the proceedings to be conducted more in public than in private, then he acted against him in accordance with the king’s advice:
| 7:160 Յայնժամ իբրեւ ետես Դենշապուհ, եթէ առ ոչինչ զսպառնալիսն արքունի համարեցաւ, եւ ոչ ողոքանացն երեսս ինչ արար, եւ քան ի ծածուկ՝ յայտնի եւս կամէր զի խաւսեսցի, կատարեաց ի վերայ նորա ըստ խրատուն արքունի:

7:161 secretly he was sent into distant exile. As Denshapuh had been instructed by his master, so he acted:
| 7:161 Եւ գաղտագողի ընկեցաւ ի հեռաւոր աւտարութիւն. որպէս զիարդ եւ ուսաւ ի վարդապետէն, եւ արար:

7:162 He, the king, also appointed two colleagues as assistants for Denshapuh from among the senior officials—Jnikan, who was the royal marzpet, and Movan, the chancellor—under the Movpetan movpet:
| 7:162 Եւ հրամայեաց եւս Դենշապհոյ երկուս եւս ընկերակիցս աւգնականս յաւագ գործակալացն. զՋնիկանն, որ էր մարզպետ արքունի, եւ զՄովան հանդերձապետ՝ ի ձեռանէ Մովպետան մովպետի:

7:163 So, these two with their retainers took the saints from that desert spot and that same night brought them as far away again to an even more terrible place:
| 7:163 Արդ երեքեան սոքա իւրաքանչիւր սպասաւորաւք առին զսուրբսն յայնմ անապատէ, եւ փոխեցան նոյնչափ եւս հեռագոյն ի մեւս եւս դժնդակ տեղի ի նմին գիշերի:

7:164 They made sure they were not observed by anyone in the army, not by Armenians or other Christians, nor by foreign pagans:
| 7:164 Եւ զոք ի կարաւանէ անտի ոչ թողին տեսանել, ո՛չ ի Հայոց եւ ո՛չ յամենայն քրիստոնէից, եւ ո՛չ բնաւ յարտաքին հեթանոսաց:

7:165 The attendants who had been in charge of the prisoners in the city were commanded to guard them carefully, so that no one might discover their tracks by which they would be led to the place of death, neither they nor any man whatever:
| 7:165 Եւ սպասաւորքն, որ էին ի վերայ կապելոցն անդէն ի քաղաքին, հրամայեցին պահել զգուշութեամբ, զի զհետս նոցա մի՛ ոք գիտասցէ՝ ընդ որ տանիցեն ի մահու տեղի, մի՛ նոքա եւ մի ամենեւին ոք ի մարդկանէ:

7:166 But there was a man from Khuzhastan in the royal army who secretly observed Christianity. By chance he had been appointed to the ranks of executioners and served in the day-guards with the instruments of torture. He came in the middle of the night and joined the groups of nobles:
| 7:166 Բայց այր մի խուժիկ ի զաւրացն արքունի, որ ի ծածուկ ունէր զքրիստոնէութիւնն, եւ վիճակեալ էր ի դասս դահճացն, եւ կայր ի սպասու աւրապահացն հանդերձ գործիական տանջանարանաւքն, եկն եմուտ ի մէջ գիշերին եւ խառնեցաւ ի դասս նախարարացն:

7:167 The first group supposed he was of the middle group, the middle that he was of the third, and all three considered him one of themselves. None of them asked: “Who are you among us?”—neither from among the lords or the servants:
| 7:167 Առաջին դասն ի միջնոյն կարծէր զնա, եւ միջինն երրորդին, եւ երեքեանն միմեանց համարէին զնա. եւ ոչ ոք ի նոցանէ եհարց՝ եթէ « Դու ո՞վ ես ընդ մեզ», ո՛չ ի տերանցն եւ ո՛չ ի սպասաւորացն:

7:168 When they reached a deserted place, which was completely barren of grass and was so terribly rocky that they could not even find anywhere to sit, the three nobles went off to a distance and ordered the executioners to bind the saints’ feet and hands:
| 7:168 Իբրեւ հասին ի տեղի անապատին, որ ամենեւին անբոյս էր ի դալարւոյ, եւ այնպէս էր ապառաժ դժնեայ, զի եւ ոչ նստելոյ անգամ տեղի գտաւ անդ նոցա, իջին հեռագոյն նախարարքն երեքեան, եւ հրամայեցին դահճացն իւրեանց կապել զոտս եւ զձեռս նոցա:

7:169 They put long cords on their feet, yoked them in couples, and dragged them along:
| 7:169 Եւ արկին պարանս երկայնս յոտս նոցա, եւ երկու երկու լծեցան եւ առին ի քարշ:
|
7:170 They pulled and tore them as they dragged them across the rocky places, so that not a bit of flesh remained on the saints’ bodies:
| 7:170 Եւ այնպէս ձգեցին եւ ճողքեցին ընդ ապառաժ տեղիսն քարշելով, զի ամենեւին խայծ ոչ մնաց ի մարմինս երանելեացն:

7:171 Then they released them and brought them to a single spot:
| 7:171 Եւ ապա լուծին եւ ածին ի մի տեղի:
|
7:172 It seemed to the nobles that “we have softened their obstinacy and have subdued their stubborn recalcitrance; now whatever we say, they will obey our words, do the king’s will, and be saved from insufferable torments:
| 7:172 Եւ թուէր իմն նոցա այսպէս, եթէ կակղեցաք զխստութիւն նոցա, եւ հնազանդեցուցաք զբիրտ ապստամբութիւն նոցա. եւ արդ զինչ եւ խաւսիցիմք, անսայցեն բանից մերոց, եւ առնիցեն զկամս թագաւորին, եւ ապրեալ լիցին յանհնարին տանջանացն:

7:173 But they could not fully comprehend that they had inflamed them like valiant soldiers, had drilled them in disciplined exercise, and had taught them to be like wild, bloodthirsty beasts:
| 7:173 Եւ զայն ոչ կարացին քաջ իմանալ, եթէ իբրեւ զքաջ զինուորս վառեցին զնոսա, եւ ի հրահանգս կրթութեան վարժեցին զնոսա, եւ իբրեւ զգազանս վայրենիս արիւնախանձս ուսուցին զնոսա:

7:174 If the saints had any doubts earlier, on looking at the cruel wounds in their bodies they repudiated their former terror:
| 7:174 Եւ եթէ ունէին սակաւ ինչ կասկած յառաջագոյն, հայեցեալ նոցա ի չարաչար վէրս մարմնոց իւրեանց` զառաջին երկեւղն ի բաց մերժեցին:

7:175 Like insensible drunkards, they began to rival each other in their responses; and like thirsty men they rushed to the fountain, to see who would be the first to shed his blood on the ground:
| 7:175 Սկսաւ իբրեւ արբեալք անզգայք զմիմեամբք ելանել ի բանից պատասխանիս, եւ փութային իբր ծարաւիք յաղբեւր, եթէ ո՛ նախ վաղ զիւր արիւնն հեղցէ յերկիր:
